A bill introduced Thursday in the U.S. House by Rep. John Salazar, D-Manassa, would create a demonstration "Good Samaritan" project limited to the Animas River watershed. Salazar's bill has a 10-year sunset clause - language that shields public and private parties involved in cleanup from liability, with no requirement to amend the Clean Water Act, according to Bill Simon, coordinator of the Animas River Stakeholders. The Animas River Stakeholders would be a Samaritan under Salazar's bill, which focuses on mines for which there are no known owners or operators to shoulder responsibility for cleanup, Simon said. The group would look to member organizations, mining companies, the federal government and others to pay for cleanup. "It makes a lot of sense," Simon said Friday. "We all agree that we need a Good Samaritan cleanup program, so I think that if we get attention from the right people we have a good chance." Supporters hope the Salazar bill will set an example for what can be done to clean up thousands of mines, most of them abandoned, in the West.

  • The ROCKY MOUNTAIN HYE ADVOCATES More Than Ninety Years
The ROCKY MOUNTAIN HYE ADVOCATES A Community Statewide Political E-Newsletter Hye translates to ‘Armenian’ – 2010 Volume II Issue 26 More than Ninety Years By Diana Der-Hovanessian By now we should have finished grieving. By now we should have found some peace. By now there should have been atonement and the pain slightly eased. By now witnesses are almost gone. And the lies about our bones believed. By now they thought we would be forgotten. and our blood dried to dust and blown. By now they thought the smoke and fire would be either greened or stone. By now they thought our stolen children would have all turned into Turks. By now they thought the aid money sent back to America would do its work in changing truth to lies: that we were never here alive. By now they thought the last survivors and their children would be in graves. They didn't count on our children's children even angrier, and more outraged. Ms. Der-Hovanessian is the author of twenty-three books of poetry and translations and president of the renowned New England Poetry Club. Twice a Fulbright professor of American poetry, she has received numerous awards for her work from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Society of America, and PEN-Columbia Translation Center, among others. Reprinted with the author’s approval. www.dianaderhovanessian.com A Man with the Courage of his Conviction Featured RMHA Candidate Retired Marine Col. John Flerlage District 6 Democrat Challenger John has taken the extra step on the Armenian Genocide.
