Stafford High School and St. Thomas High School of Houston are teaming up to donate non-perishable food (for the Houston Food Bank) at the gate before the 7:30 p.m. Friday, September 21 Football game between the Spartans and Eagles. We will have collection bins outside the stadium. STAFFORD MSD’S NEW DANCE ROOM Stafford High Dance Teacher/Stafford Sensations Coach Shannon Heath is ecstatic about the new Stafford High School Dance Classroom, above the Competition Gym. This week was the first week of the Dance Room. #COMMITTEDTOSMSD Curtis Robinson, Sr. is the #CommittedtoSMSD Employee for the month of September. Robinson has been with Stafford MSD for eight years. He is currently the Lead Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioner Technician for the district. He has proudly lived in the City of Stafford for 30 years and he and his lovely wife have (2) two sons that graduated from Stafford MSD. SMSD OPEN HOUSES WERE SUCCESSFUL Stafford MSD Open Houses – for all campuses – were successful. We measure our success based on parent involvement at these events, and we had several hundred parents attend the events – on each of our campuses. #BEATBELLVILLE FIRST BREAKFAST OF 2018-19 The first Stafford Super Senior 55+ Breakfast of 2018 was a success! We were proud to have SMSD Board Vice President Xavier Herrera, Trustee Auturo Jackson, Council Member A.J. Honore, and County Commissioner James Patterson on hand. We also welcomed Brooke Lewis & Steve Gonzales of the Houston Chronicle, who were covering a story about the phenomenon of our Culinary Arts program, which has grown from about 20 to more than 200 students. SMSD BOARD VP & ASTROS OWNERS UNITE TO SUPPORT STAFFORD BOYS & GIRLS CLUB Stafford High School won a State Track & Field Championship in 2015. Two years later, the Houston Astros followed that up with a World Series title. Winning is important. But giving back to the community is even more of a priority -- something that happens for Stafford and the Astros -- win, lose or draw. ...Stafford MSD Board Vice President Xavier Herrera and Houston Astros owners Jim and Whitney Crane attended an event to support the Boys & Girls Club of Stafford on Thursday night. SMSD BOOK FAIR Stafford MSD was proud to host a Book Fair at all of our campuses this week, promoting literacy for all grade levels. SMSD DAY @ UH GAME – SEPT. 22 The University of Houston Football Program is hosting SMSD Day at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 22. Tickets are $10 with the PROMO CODE: STAFFORD. The Cougars host Texas Southern. Whether you are a UH fan, a TSU fan, both or neither, come out to the game and celebrate with SMSD! MICHEAUX INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME Congratulations to Stafford High Automotive Teacher Larry Micheaux, who was inducted into the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame on Monday in Fort Worth. He was proud to have his family at the ceremony, along with former Stafford MSD Superintendent Dr. Gary Rotan and his wife, Rita. Dr. Rotan is the Superintendent who hired Micheaux. Micheaux, a founding member of Phi Slama Jama at the University of Houston, played in two NCAA Final Fours, alongside Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler, for the UH Cougars before playing in the NBA for the Kansas City Kings, Milwaukee Bucks and the hometown Houston Rockets a year before they became ...Western Conference Champions. From 1985-94, Micheaux played professional basketball in Italy and Spain. In addition to being an SMSD Teacher, Micheaux is also the proud grandparent of an SMSD student. COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP A big "Thank You" to Stafford MSD Superintendent Dr. Robert Bostic and Stafford Police Chief Richard Ramirez. They diligently work together to ensure the safety and security of Stafford MSD. On Friday, the dynamic duo had the opportunity to enjoy Stafford's season-opening victory last Friday in Katy.     The Hall of Honor and the Move to Tier One Athletics By Debbie Z. Harwell rom its earliest days, the University of Houston rose to Fthe top in athletics—not in football or basketball as you might expect, but in ice hockey. The team competed for the first time in 1934 against Rice Institute in the Polar Wave Ice Rink on McGowan Street. It went undefeated for the season, scoring three goals to every one for its opponents. The next year, only one player returned, but the yearbook reported that they “represented a fighting bunch of puck- pushers.” They must have been because the team had no reserves and played entire games without a break.1 The sports picture changed dramatically in 1946 when the University joined the Lone Star Conference (LSC) and named Harry H. Fouke as athletic director. He added coaches in men’s tennis, golf, track, football, and basketball, and a new director of women’s athletics focused on physical education. The old Stephen F. Austin Hotel, where I stayed for the first five years at the tournament was remodeled and renamed. The cost became outrageous there, so we no longer enjoyed staying downtown. Today the Hotel is called InterContinental Stephen F. Austin. Visiting Sixth street became popular and I continued to eat at the Waterloo Ice House. The main attraction in those days was playing at Gregory Gym on the campus of U.T. We always had great pickup games at the student activity center, located right next to Gregory. Jogging was also another passion of mine. Town Lake provided great running trails just south of downtown Austin. Coaching clinics became the norm, as I continued to learn the game. Great times. The person who had the greatest impact on my life was my brother-in-law. This book is dedicated to him. At the age of 10, he began coming over to the house dating my older sister. He was like a family member. For the next twenty years he influenced all aspects of my life.
