v“c Elul 5768

Dear Friends:

On Monday evening September 29 we will conclude the year 5768 – a Sabbatical/Shmitah year and usher in Rosh Hashanah and the Jewish Year 5769, a Hakhel year.

During the time the Temple stood, and in some respects even today, the Shmitah year is when all the fields in Israel would lay fallow. The Sabbatical/Shmitah year was a time of spiritual growth which allowed the Jewish people to focus on spiritual matters and study without being distracted by the need to sow, plow and harvest.

In one of the very last mitzvoth in the Torah we are taught that on Sukkot of the year following the Shmittah year “ogv ,t kvev” Hakhel et Ha’Am – Gather the Nation” (Deut. 31:12)– every Jewish man, woman and child would gather in the courtyard of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem to hear select portions of the Torah read by the king. This gathering replicated the experience of the Jewish nation as we stood at Mount Sinai to receive G-d's Torah.

In our generation the revived the concept of “Hakhel”, urging everywhere during the “Hakhel” year to gather in groups, large and small in order to foster greater unity, and spur momentum for learning Torah, observing mitzvot and giving Tzedaka.

“Hakhel – Gather the Nation” is the theme of our calendar this year. With programs and activities of all types, geared to groups large and small, beginners or experts, committed or still exploring, designed to teach and inform, inspire and motivate – there is something for everyone – certainly, we hope, for you!

Join us!

With best wishes for a Kesiva V’Chasimah Tova – L’Shana Tova U’Mesuka – That you be inscribed and sealed for a Good and Sweet New Year.

Those of you who haven’t had the chance to do so, I strongly urge you to make it a priority. May 2009 9675 xhui thhr- The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson of righteous memory (1902-1994), the seventh leader of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, is considered to have been the most phenomenal Jewish personality of modern times. To hundreds of thousands of followers and millions of admirers around the world, he was — and still is, — “the Rebbe,” undoubtedly, the one individual more than any other singularly responsible for stirring the conscience and spiritual awakening of world Jewry. Put My Energy & Expertise to Work For You! The Rebbe was born in 1902, on the 11th day of Nissan, in Nikolaev, Russia, to the renowned kabbalist, talmudic scholar and Rhoda Freedberg leader Rabbi Levi Yitzchak and Rebbetzin . cell: 321-9638 After the passing of his father-in-law, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak , in 1950, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson reluctantly ascended to the Office: 329-8801 x409 [email protected] leadership of the Lubavitch movement. Radiating a keen sense of urgency, he demanded much from his followers, and even more from himself. The Rebbe led, above else, by example. With extraordinary insight, he perceived the wealth of potential in each person. He would not acknowledge division or separation. Every — indeed every human being – he taught, has a unique role to play in the greater scheme of things and is an integral part of the tapestry of G d's creation. In appreciation to “From the time that I was a child attending cheder,” the Rebbe states in a letter he wrote to the President of Israel in 1956, “and even earlier than that, there began to take form in my mind a vision of the future redemption: the redemption of Israel from its last exile, a redemption such as would explicate the Chabad suffering, the decrees and the massacres of galut.” The Redemption, of course, is not just the vision of a very exceptional child growing up in the pogrom-smitten city of Nikolayev in the first decade of the 20th century. The vision of a future world free of ignorance, suffering and strife — a world which embodies and exhibits the goodness and perfection of its Creator For all they do for the -- is the subject of numerous biblical prophecies and the aspiration of a hundred generations of Jews. But no man in recent memory has made this vision Stamford Community the stuff and substance of his life, and has achieved so much towards its realization, as has the Rebbe. Iin the early morning hours of the 3rd of the Hebrew month of Tammuz, in the year 5754, (June 1994) the Rebbe’s soul ascended to heaven. His legacy lives on in the lives of the millions that he inspired to continue to work towards the fulfillment of his lifelong passionate dream and aspiration, the vision of our Mark and Sheryl Schwartz prophets, a world perfected and redeemed. It is not so much that we need to be taken out of exile. It is that the exile must be taken out of us. and Family —The Rebbe (From 365 Meditations of the Rebbe by Tzvi Freeman)

June 2009 9675 ,nuz xhui- We are often asked, “What ‘really’ is Chabad's agenda?”. “What, truly, are you trying to accomplish?” At one level, the simple answer is, “what you see is what you get.” The programs, classes and activities spelled out in this calendar are meant to do exactly what they are described to do. Yet on a deeper level there is an agenda. All of us at Chabad have as a goal nothing less then an utter transformation of the entire world. We have a word for it - Moshiach. Allow us please a word of explanation.

The belief in the coming of Moshiach and the Messianic redemption is one of the fundamental principles of Judaism. Every Jew, Maimonides writes in his Code, “should believe that Moshiach will arise and restore the Kingdom of David to its original state and sovereignty, rebuild the Bet Hamikdash (Holy Temple of Jerusalem), gather the dispersed of Israel, and in his days all the laws of the Torah shall be reinstituted as they had been aforetimes.” While the belief in the coming of Moshiach is fundamental to Torah and Judaism, very few, however, understand its meaning and implications. The doctrine is affirmed, but more as an abstract theorem than as practical issue of immediate relevance. While our Calendar/Program Guide is hardly the place for an exhaustive discussion of Put My Energy & Expertise this most important, yet so misunderstood, topic – we do want to share some thoughts on the subject. We draw liberally from “Moshiach” A systematic compilation of to Work For You! the essential Halachic and conceptual teachings about Moshiach and the Messianic redemption from the Biblical, Talmudic-Midrashic and other authoritative sources Rhoda Freedberg cell: 321-9638 by Rabbi Jacob Immanuel Schochet. Office: 329-8801 x409 [email protected] ACCORDING TO JEWISH TRADITION: • Moshiach shall restore the Bet Hamikdash in Jerusalem. • Moshiach will effect the ingathering of all the exiles of Israel • The Messianic era will mark the end of evil and sin. • The Messianic era will be a time of universal awareness, perception and knowledge of G–d. • It will be an era of peace and harmony in the Holy Land and throughout the world • The Messianic era will witness ultimate physical and spiritual bliss – revival of the dead and an end to disease and death.

THE MOSHIACH WITHIN Some things never change: animals, vegetables, minerals. But people do. Change is part of life. People change. Countries change. Societies change. The world changes. Why? Because people reject the status quo. People try to change themselves, things, life. Why? Because people want a better world—don’t you? If we knew there was nothing we could do about this mad world, we couldn’t get up in the morning. But something drives us on. This trait, this will, is the belief in Moshiach—the belief that the world will be better one day. Ultimately, the belief in Moshiach is the belief in ourselves, and in the eternal triumph of good.

WHAT CAN I/WE DO TO HELP BRING MOSHIACH? Good is like water collecting in a cup—drop by drop, deed by deed. When the cup is full, it overflows its sides. When we fill this world with enough good, G-d sends Moshiach. G-d gave mankind tools for good— the Torah. Whatever your spiritual configuration, G–d is waiting for your move—our move. Let’s work together to bring Moshiach, now. Let’s do good.
