Let Go and Let God By Laura Scanlan [email protected]

4th Sunday of Easter In this week’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles we find Paul and preaching in Antioch of Pisidia. As was the practice in the early church the disciples of Jesus still went to the temple to preach and then celebrated the “Breaking of the Bread” in their homes. When large crowds came to listen to Paul and Barnabas the Jews were “…filled with jealousy and with violent abuse contradicted what Paul had to say…” Paul very clearly told them that because they would not listen to the word of God, they would not receive eternal life and Paul and Barnabas would now turn their attention to the Gentiles. The Gentiles were delighted to hear this and they praised the word of the Lord. Needless to say, the Jews were not happy with this. They tried to have Paul and Barnabas persecuted but instead had them expelled from the area.

The second reading is from the Book of Revelation. Many individuals believe that the Book of Revelation talks about the end of times. It does not. It was written to encourage the early church members during times of persecution. This verse is a good example. “These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress…” It is believed that this may have been written during the persecutions of Nero or Domitian. These are the ones who listened to the word of God.

Jesus always used situations that would be familiar to the people he was speaking to. The people would be very familiar with a shepherd. Sheep have very poor eye sight, so they had to rely on their sense of hearing to survive. Sheep learned the voice of the shepherd and knew that they will be well taken care of. A hired shepherd will disappear when he sees the wolf coming causing the sheep to scatter. We are Jesus’ sheep. Jesus offers his sheep (us) eternal life all we have to do is put ourselves into his hands and obey his voice (his word). “Jesus can do this because the Father has given him the flock for its safekeeping and shepherding.”1 Our parish is looking for an individual (or two) who would like to volunteer to take photos at our As the Responsorial Psalm states “We are his events (i.e. May Crowning, Divine Mercy Sunday, people, the sheep of his flock.” Baptisms, Dinners, etc.) We love including parish photos in your bulletin and seek your time and talent. 1 Verna A. On behalf of the St. Paul K of C Council, I wish to THANK all of the parishioners of St. John XXlll Church for the extreme generosity that you showed to us for our annual Tootsie Roll Drive. Your support of this very worthy charitable cause was amazing, and I was overjoyed by your response.
