O Desconcerto Anarquista De John Cage
A Heretic in the Schoenberg Circle: Roberto Gerhard's First Engagement with Twelve-Tone Procedures in Andantino

He mod- elled this technique on the tri-tetrachordal procedure in Schoenberg’s Prelude from the Suite for Piano, Op. 25 but, unlike his teacher, Gerhard treated the tetrachords as internally unordered pitch-class collections. This decision was possibly encouraged by his exposure from the mid- 1920s onwards to Josef Matthias Hauer’s writings on ‘trope theory’. Although rarely discussed by scholars, Andantino occupies a special place in Gerhard’s creative output for being his first attempt at ‘twelve-tone composition’ and foreshadowing the permutation techniques that would become a distinctive feature of his later serial compositions. This article analyses Andantino within the context of the early history of twelve-tone music and theory. How well I do remember our Berlin days, what a couple we made, you and I; you (at that time) the anti-Schoenberguian [sic], or the very reluctant Schoenberguian, and I, the non-conformist, or the Schoenberguian malgré moi. -

Pitch-Class Set Theory: an Overture
Chapter One Pitch-Class Set Theory: An Overture A Tale of Two Continents In the late afternoon of October 24, 1999, about one hundred people were gathered in a large rehearsal room of the Rotterdam Conservatory. They were listening to a discussion between representatives of nine European countries about the teaching of music theory and music analysis. It was the third day of the Fourth European Music Analysis Conference.1 Most participants in the conference (which included a number of music theorists from Canada and the United States) had been looking forward to this session: meetings about the various analytical traditions and pedagogical practices in Europe were rare, and a broad survey of teaching methods was lacking. Most felt a need for information from beyond their country’s borders. This need was reinforced by the mobility of music students and the resulting hodgepodge of nationalities at renowned conservatories and music schools. Moreover, the European systems of higher education were on the threshold of a harmoni- zation operation. Earlier that year, on June 19, the governments of 29 coun- tries had ratifi ed the “Bologna Declaration,” a document that envisaged a unifi ed European area for higher education. Its enforcement added to the urgency of the meeting in Rotterdam. However, this meeting would not be remembered for the unusually broad rep- resentation of nationalities or for its political timeliness. What would be remem- bered was an incident which took place shortly after the audience had been invited to join in the discussion. Somebody had raised a question about classroom analysis of twentieth-century music, a recurring topic among music theory teach- ers: whereas the music of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries lent itself to general analytical methodologies, the extremely diverse repertoire of the twen- tieth century seemed only to invite ad hoc approaches; how could the analysis of 1. -
Pisaro PRESS RELEASE
! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Kelly Hargraves, [email protected], 213-237-2873 MEMBERS OF THE PRESS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND. RSVP to [email protected] ! ! REDCAT presents Michael Pisaro’s Grounded Cloud (World Premiere) A mist is a collection of points (L.A. premiere) Wednesday November 18, 2015, 8:30 p.m. “Like many a great piece of music, this work is about coaxing the listener to hear and see the world a bit differently when one next steps outside.” – Just Outside (on Pisaro's CD entitled "A wave and a waves" REDCAT, CalArts’ downtown center for contemporary arts, presents two new compositions by Michael Pisaro, Tuesday November 18, at 8:30 p.m. A central figure in the John Cage-inspired Wandelweiser collective of experimental composers, Pisaro is acclaimed for his meticulous embrace of sound as a material density, across a continuum of composed, incidental and “silent” forms. Pisaro, performing on guitar, is joined by Joe Panzner (electronics) and Greg Stuart (percussion) for the world premiere of Grounded Cloud, a 20-minute work inspired by a poem by Mei-mei Berssenbrugge. A piece for amplified bass drum (with rice vibrating on the surface), electronic sounds (“cloud like" collections of filtered noise) and electric guitar, Grounded Cloud creates a suspended musical atmosphere that always threatens to “land” as the music occasionally gathers pulse and force before dissipating again. Also on the program is the Los Angeles debut of the hour-long A mist is a collection of points, with pianist Philip Bush playing alongside Panzner and Stuart. The three- movement trio for piano, percussion and sine tones premiered in February, 2015. -
The Spirit of the Living Creatures Was in the Wheels -- Ezekiel 1:21
The spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels -- Ezekiel 1:21 "Wheels Within Wheels deepens the musical experience created at Congregation Bet Haverim by lifting the veil between the ordinary and the sacred, so that our earthy expression of musical holiness connects with the celestial resonance of the universal. Like Ezekiel’s mystical vision, the spirals of harmonies, voices and instruments evoke contemplation, awe and celebration. At times Wheels Within Wheels will transport you to an intimate experience with your innermost self, and at other times it will convey a profound connection with the world around you." -- Rabbi Joshua Lesser THE MUSICIANS OF CONGREGATION BET HAVERIM Chorus Soprano: Nefesh Chaya, Sara Dardik, Julie Fishman, Nancy Gerber, Joy Goodman, Ellie McGraw, Theresa Prestwood, Rina Rosenberg, Faith Russler, Sandi Schein Alto: Jesse Harris Bathrick, Elke Davidson, Gayanne Geurin, Kim Goldsmith, Rebecca Green, Carrie Hausman, Alix Laing, Rebecca Leary Safon, AnnaLaura Scheer, Valerie Singer, Linda Weiskoff, Valerie Wolpe, McKenzie Wren Tenor: Ned Bridges, Brad Davidorf, Faye Dresner, Henry Farber, Alan Hymowitz, Lynne Norton Bass: Dan Arnold, Gregg Bedol, David Borthwick, Gary Falcon, Bill Laing, Bill Witherspoon, Howard Winer Band Will Robertson, guitar, keyboards; Natalie Stahl, clarinet, saxophone; Sarah Zaslaw, violin, viola; Reuben Haller, mandolin; Jordan Dayan, bass, electric bass; Mike Zimmerman, drum kit, percussion; Henry Farber and Gayanne Geurin, percussion; with Matthew Kaminski, accordion Strings Sarah Zaslaw and Benjamin Reiss, violin; David Borthwick, viola; Ruth Einstein, cello; Will Robertson, double bass Children’s Choir and CBH Community School Chorus director: Will Robertson Music director: Gayanne Geurin Thank You It takes a shul to raise a recording. -
