The weather Childhood Cancer was not the best, but the day improved as it went on and I managed to get around all the Churches in the Deanery. Thank OPEN HOUSE you also to everyone who laid on refreshments along the way. All the money is yet Winterburn House, Church Lane, to come in, but it looks like something in the region of £1000 will go to support the Haselbury Plucknett, Crewkerne, TA187RE work of the Somerset Churches Trust. This is a fantastic sum, thanks to all your generous giving! I have to say I really enjoyed the ride and went to some of the Sat 8th October smaller, more remote Churches in our Deanery for the first time. I was always 10.30am-1.30pm impressed at how well they are cared for and how beautiful some of them are. All of this takes time and effort by those involved, for which we can be truly thankful. Most try to be open on a daily basis for Tea & CAKES! people to visit and enjoy some time of quiet reflection or prayer. Feel free to bring a friend Many of the churches celebrate a variety of services at this time of year – Harvest Festival, Remembrance Sunday, All Saints and All Souls for example. All of them in their different ways provide moments to pause and give thanks; for the things we enjoy, for people who are special to us, for those who have lost their lives in national service and for those who have inspired us or helped us in our lives. We welcome anyone who feels like they would like to come along and to join in. It is good for us all to pause from the rush of daily life and we hope our services, at the least, do just that. Our parish Churches are there for us all and week by week we gather to hear stories told, read psalms and sing hymns, each telling in their own way that another world is possible.

My cycle ride was encouraging as I visited Churches small and large and was moved by the effort that goes into ensuring that all these places remain there for the common good. Places of worship, stillness and beauty where we gather to praise and honour our Creator and where we can nurture our deep longing for union with the living God.

These should be pleasurable times and occasions for celebrations. Sadly, one person’s idea of fun and celebrating can be another’s misery. With this in Plumbing & Heating mind I have put together some advice regarding Halloween and Bonfire night.

Halloween, also known as All Saints’ Day, and the following day, All Souls' Day, Oil Boilers & Tanks which commemorates the dead, is often overshadowed by anti-social behaviour. Installed, serviced & commissioned AGA The practice of ‘trick or treating’ can be alarming, as unidentifiable youths appear on Serviced & commissioned your doorstep expecting, or even demanding, sweets or have a ‘trick’ played on you. The "trick" is an idle threat to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property All other plumbing work if no treat is given. Sadly, eggs and flour are often used causing damage. This is anti- undertaken social behaviour and will be dealt with promptly by the Police and PCSOs. In recent years, a pre-emptive strike has been very successful and shops have worked with us to ensure eggs and flour are not sold to youths. This pre-emptive action will take place again this year. Often the local press print posters stating ‘No Trick or Treaters Please’,failing that a hand-written notice on the front door should stop unwanted door knocking. Next meeting:

Wednesday 5th October at 7.30 pm Potatoes – with Keith Mayes Competition: a potato man At the Bible Christian Centre, Haselbury – visitors welcome.

At our September meeting, before our eyes, Kay Wych morphed into a kitchen maid at Reading Abbey at the time of the Reformation. We heard how she had journeyed into the character of Alyce Cleeve via amateur dramatics and a passion for history and archaeology. The following week we visited Brympton D’Evercy, which dates back to 1306. Another illustrated history lesson for our members!

We’re now looking forward to Keith Mayes educating us in the vagaries and varieties of the not-so-humble potato. Why not join us for the evening? Female guests are always welcome.

The local community is very important to our school and I am looking forward to extending a warm welcome to everyone locally. We are always looking for more volunteers to come and support the children’s learning. The children are currently studying ‘Up, Up and Away!’ which includes the children finding out about flight. So if you have a bit of spare time we would love to hear from you. We are also very much looking forward to welcoming our community at our next Open Day during November so please look out for details.

Community Speed Watch [CSW]

At the Official Opening Day for the Village Telephone Defibrillator on 13 August (organised by the Parish Council) the village Community Speed Watch [CSW] was also in attendance to explain the work of Speed Watch and its aim of making everybody aware of the danger of speeding vehicles. It is extremely pleasing to report that as a result of our efforts an additional six residents have volunteered to join the CSW team . They saw that they would be helping to improve road safety in the village both for motorists and - perhaps more importantly - for pedestrians especially our children. Speed Watch involves only two hours of your time per month ...... a small price to pay in our efforts to reduce the current total of more than 100 people killed on the roads of Avon & Somerset every year !
