Images from the early 1960s by East Harlem dry cleaner and amateur photographer John Albok document a series of floats from the Puerto Rican Day Parade. In a deeply surrealist moment, a giant Singer sewing machine or a set of artificial palm trees towers over a bevy of beauty queens in gowns of abundant tulle. Similarly incongruous, a series of photographs by Las Hermanas Iglesias presents them in knitted versions of their naked bodies. Simultaneously clothed and “nude,” the artists explore the landscape of Tasmania through a visual dialogue with their bodies. A set of four images by Argentine photographer Esteban Pastorino Díaz depicts a series of art deco buildings that appear to emerge from the aging urban landscape of Buenos Aires. Created through a photographic process known as gum printing, the buildings are like ghostly apparitions surrounded by the darkest blackness of night. A selection of photographs by Miguel Rio Branco represents one of the highlights of the exhibition. These works, in particular, confound the viewer’s wish for a complete narrative form as experienced through a series of photographs. Instead, the images act as moments that are enigmatic, resisting immediate interpretation. They provoke the viewer to find commonalities in form, color, abstracted figures and the emotions evoked by the combination of these. A special series of portraits by the under-recognized Puerto Rican photographer Sophie Rivera will be included in the exhibition. Rivera was a key figure in the burgeoning street photography movement of the 1970s. In 2000 she received the GLBT Historical Society Arts Award. "The creation of El Museo is one of the moments where history started to change," said the Mayor as he presented an official proclamation from the City. This was only one of the surprises in a Gala evening that honored Ella Fontanals-Cisneros, Craig Robins, and El Museo's founding director, artist Raphael Montañez Ortiz and raised in excess of $1.2 million. El Museo board chair Maria Eugenia Maury opened the evening with spirited remarks invoking Latina activist Dolores Huerta who said, "Walk the streets with us into history. Get off the sidewalk." The evening was MC'd by WNBC Correspondent Lynda Baquero with nearly 500 guests dancing in black tie.     Visible Care: Nan Goldin and Andres Serrano’s Post-mortem Photography Lauren Jane Summersgill Humanities and Cultural Studies Birkbeck, University of London Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy November 2014 2 Declaration I certify that this thesis is the result of my own investigations and, except for quotations, all of which have been clearly identified, was written entirely by me. Lauren J. Summersgill October 2014 3 Abstract This thesis investigates artistic post-mortem photography in the context of shifting social relationship with death in the 1980s and 1990s. Analyzing Nan Goldin’s Cookie in Her Casket and Andres Serrano’s The Morgue, I argue that artists engaging in post- mortem photography demonstrate care for the deceased. Further, that demonstrable care in photographing the dead responds to a crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s in America. At the time, death returned to social and political discourse with the visibility of AIDS and cancer and the euthanasia debates, spurring on photographic engagement with the corpse. Nan Goldin’s 1989 post-mortem portrait of her friend, Cookie in Her Casket, was first presented within The Cookie Portfolio. The memorial portfolio traced the friendship between Cookie and Goldin over fourteen years. The work relies on a personal narrative, framing the works within a familial gaze. I argue that Goldin creates the sense of family to encourage empathy in the viewer for Cookie’s loss. Further, Goldin’s generic and beautified post-mortem image of Cookie is a way of offering Cookie respect and dignity in death. Andres Serrano’s 1992 The Morgue is a series of large-scale cropped, and detailed photographs capturing indiscriminate bodies from within an unidentified morgue.

ABSTRACT A Light in the Darkness: Argentinian Photography During the Military Dictatorship (1976-1983) by Ana Tallone Adviser: Katherine Manthorne In 2006, on the thirtieth anniversary of the military coup that brought Argentinian democracy to a halt, a group of photojournalists put together an outstanding exhibition of images from the dictatorship.1 This dissertation critically engages with the most enduring photojournalistic works produced during this period and featured in the landmark retrospective.

As a socio-cultural phenomenon, Los An­ geles simply cannot be understood without taking Mexico City into ac­ count, its southernmost neighborhood. Between both cities runs the great­ est migratory axis on the planet, and the conceptual freeway with the greatest number of accidents.
