Doc# OMA-DM-2003-0173R02-LS_Automatic_Detection Originated by OMA-DM 21 Nov 2003 Technical Specification Group Services and System Aspects TSGS#22(03)0730 Meeting #22, Hawaii, USA, 15-18 December 2003 LIAISON STATEMENT Title: LS Automatic Detection Public OMA Confidential To: 3GPP TSG SA, 3GPP2 TSG-S Copy: OMA REQ Response to: OMA DM WG Source: Device Management WG of the Open Mobile Alliance Contact(s): James Jennings, IBM, Chair of OMA DM WG +1 919 224 1783 [email protected] Attachments: OMA- TP-2003-0392 1 Overview OMA DM WG is developing a Device Management solution, which also will be used in 3GPP and/or 3GPP2. One of the important Use Cases require the operators network to automatically detect the first time a user use a new device in the network. Part of the Use Case (the entire Use Case is included in the attachment): “A Subscriber acquires a Device outside the operator's normal sales lines, e.g. second-hand. An inappropriate configuration in this case is very likely. The only connection to the operator is the smart card, where applicable. The Subscriber's first time use of the Device is detected automatically by the operator's infrastructure.” Part of this use case, detection of the user’s new device, is out of scope of the OMA DM work. OMA DM WG suggest 3GPP SA/3GPP2 TSG-S to consider to include support for this functionality in order to solve the network related part of the above use case. The OMA DM WG is currently in the middle of the development of the next version for OMA Device Management specification where this Use Case is included. Our preliminary release plan for the next version is July 2004. The Use Case is approved in OMA Technical Plenary and in the Requirements WG. Now OMA DM WG is responsible for developing the requested functionality and to work (via LS) with other standardization bodies to assure that we can fulfil all requested functionality. 2 Proposal OMA DM WG wants with this LS to initiate a dialogue to align our goal to include this functionality in the upcoming OMA Device Management release. 3 Requested Action(s) OMA DM WG kindly ask for 3GPP/3GPP2 support of this functionality and if you intend to include it in any release in the same timeframe as our release, July 2004. We also kindly ask for a recommendation on which NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES (WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED) ARE MADE BY THE OPEN MOBILE ALLIANCE OR ANY OPEN MOBILE ALLIANCE MEMBER OR ITS AFFILIATES REGARDING ANY OF THE IPR’S REPRESENTED ON THE “OMA IPR DECLARATIONS” LIST, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE ACCURACY, COMPLETENESS, VALIDITY OR RELEVANCE OF THE INFORMATION OR WHETHER OR NOT SUCH RIGHTS ARE ESSENTIAL OR NON-ESSENTIAL. We kindly ask for an initial response no later than December 2003. 4 Conclusion OMA DM Group would like to thank 3GPP/3GPP2 for their consideration on the Automatic Detection issue. © 2003 Open Mobile Alliance Ltd.
