Stories from the Heart of Australia, the Stories of Its People
O UR GIFT TO Y O U Stories from the PENNING THE P ANDEMIC EDIT ED B Y J OHANNA S K I NNE R & JANE C O NNO L LY Inner Cover picture – Liz Crispie Inner Cover design – Danielle Long Foreword – Johanna Skinner and Jane Connolly Self-Isolation – Margaret Clifford Foreword Late in 2019 news reports of a highly virulent virus were emerging from China. No one could imagine then what would follow. As a general practitioner working at a busy Brisbane surgery, I really did not think that it would affect us that much. How wrong I was. Within months, the World Health Organisation had named the virus COVID 19 and a pandemic was declared. Life as we knew it was changed, perhaps forever. I was fortunate to be part of a practice that had put protocols in place should the worst happen, but even so, I felt overwhelmed by the impact on the patients that I was in contact with daily. They poured their hearts out with stories of resilience, heartache and lives changed irrevocably. I contacted my friend Jane, an experienced editor and writer, about my idea to collect these tales into an anthology. In less than five minutes, she responded enthusiastically and became its senior editor, bringing her years of experience and sharp eye to detail to the anthology. Together, we spent many weekends over pots of tea and Jane’s warm scones reading the overwhelming number of stories and poems that the public entrusted to us. Our greatest regret was that we couldn’t accommodate every piece we received. -

Adapted by Ana Seara, Heather Fairbairn and Sophie van der Stegen Composed by Ana Seara and W. A. Mozart Once Upon A Time.. The Magic Flute SYNOPSIS In a creaky attic, four friends discover an ancient book: an opera score. From its dusty pages, music pours out as if by magic. What other mysteries hide within its pages? The friends are drawn into playing out the story they find inside: a tale of lost princes and adventurous princesses, sun gods and queens of the night, friendly bird watchers and enchanted instruments. After searching the attic for the costumes and props to enact the story, Felix, Thomas, Juliet and Sarah begin an exciting musical journey. Along the way, they call on the “birds of the forest” – the audience – for help, and discover the joy of music, friendship and imagination. It is a delightful 50-minute acoustic musical production for children aged 3- 8 years, offering a high-quality and intimate theatrical experience for young audiences Originally created for the EU and following European success, Little Match is proud to bring this work to Queensland and help tune in little ears to quality music. MUSIC This re-imagining is an innovative combination of newly-composed music and Mozart’s original exquisite score. Directed by Heather Fairbairn, the three singers and pianist engage the audience in participatory, accessible and kinesthetic means. SETTING An immersive and participatory, the magic of Mozart meets the thrill of Jumanji in this enchanting musical adventure for the whole family. Set in the round, any space (10m x 10m min) is suitable. -
