(Signature Department of The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada ( I Date DE-6 (2/88) Reporting AIDS: Representation, Rhetoric and the Construction of Global Geographies of AIDS Abstract I aim to examine some of the complex personal, political and popular geographies generative of, encoded in and legitimated by the ‘epidemic of signification’: the construction of AIDS through discourse and language. Peter Gould’s popularly-oriented book The Slow Plague is, arguably, Geography’s most significant entry to date into this discourse and Slim: A Reporter’s Own Story ofAIDS in East Africa forms a key part of the same ‘epidemic’. It was written by Ed Hooper, a journalist and photographer for the BBC and Guardian, who produced several of the early ‘AIDS in Africa’ Western media representations. Both men write ‘authoritatively’ about AIDS, aim to serve the ‘public’, and rely upon the rhetorics of science, objective journalism and empire for the powerful conveyance of their stories and respective geographical knowledges. The signifying practices and rhetoric they use encode and legitimate a wide variety of aspirations, meanings, beliefs, attitudes, ideas and actions. I am attempting to unravel their complex narratives: focussing initially on a critique of Gould’s concept of science; then interrogating the explicitly visual and scientific geography Gould aims to situate within the AIDS research paradigm. I use Slim to examine the mechanics of construction of the ‘AIDS in Africa’ Western media discourse, focussing both on the formative and intense discursive moment of the late 1980s and on more recent media representations of ‘AIDS in Africa’. This allows these representations to be situated within a specific and revealing personal and political diseconomy of capital, access, perception and production. Particular notions of sex, race, gender, religion, medicine, science, the social, nature and culture are called upon and reinforced or re-negotiated whenever AIDS is talked about. When one writes authoritatively about AIDS, a deep responsibility is shouldered. Meanings, beliefs, attitudes, ideas and actions flow from the text - writing within this nexus can have a very real, material effect on bodies. The sweep of a powerful pen may lead directly to mental and physical pain, or it may offer succour, hope or an easing of suffering. Hall was not overstating his case when he declared “textuality as site of life or death” since the manner in which one talks, writes, and represents in relation to AIDS can be exactly this.1 Here I examine three sets of popular and potentially very powerful representations constructed within this frighteningly significant discursive nexus. Peter Gould’s popularly-oriented book The Slow Plague is, arguably, Geography’s most significant entry to date into the discourse on AIDS and I analyse his work in detail in Chapter One, focussing initially on a critique of Gould’s concept of science; then interrogating the explicitly spatial, visual and scientific geography that Gould aims to situate within the AIDS research paradigm. I then turn from an analysis of Geography’s dominant response to AIDS to a specific and monolithic popular geography worked out within this nexus, ‘AIDS in Africa’, as chronicled by the media, specifically the ‘quality press’, in Britain and North America. Slim: A Reporter’s Own Story of AiDS in East Africa forms a key part of this popular discourse. It was written by Ed Hooper, a journalist and photographer for the BBC and The Guardian, who produced several of the early ‘AIDS in Africa’ Western media stories and also several photographs of Ugandan people with AIDS which were syndicated widely in Britain and North America. Slim is a literary journalistic account of Flooper’s time in Uganda reporting AIDS. (eds.), Cultural Studies (New York: Routledge), p.285. 1 mechanics of construction of the ‘AIDS in Africa’ media discourse and feeds into this self-same discourse as a piece of popular representation itself. So, in Chapter Two I aim to examine, first, the literary construction of representations of ‘AIDS in Africa’- attempting to unravel the intertwining rhetorics of objectivity and empire within which the story is predominantly couched. And, secondly, I examine the literal construction of this discourse, since Slim reveals for analysis the asymmetries of power and disproportionate economies of capital, access, sight and production that underpin and enable the ‘AIDS in Africa’ media narrative. These asymmetries and diseconomies normally lie hidden behind the journalistic rhetoric of objectivity and passivity but they form a crucial part of the actuality of the situation from which these representations emerge. A considerable amount of meaning is added to the media representations when considered within the context revealed by Slim. Therefore, having examined this context, in Chapter Three I turn to the media representations themselves, considering, initially, the frantic and frightening discursive moment in the late 1980s to which Slim provides the backdrop. This period of time saw ‘AIDS in Africa’ first reported in the Western press and, I believe, established a dominant tone and framework within which the story was relayed and understood, a framework of understanding still in use today. This framework both encodes and legitimates a series of polymorphous collusions between racism and sexism and draws upon and reinforces a particularly distinctive geographical imaginary: the story seems to take place in an aestheticised and isolated essentially colonial, chaotic, woeful and disease-ridden ‘Africa’ , and this, of course, has many detrimental repercussions for those so represented. I conclude, by way of a postscript, by examining the first signs of fracture in this monolithic ‘AIDS in Africa’ media discourse described above. In 1993, while other news outlets continued to relay the ‘AIDS in Africa’ story within the framework of understanding established in the late 1980s, The Sunday Times of London broke ranks and began to run a series of articles suggesting that ‘AIDS in Africa’ was actually “a myth.” This new twist in the discourse obviously has equally serious implications for the represented. An analysis of this second, more recent discursive media moment also begins to reveal the alarming complexity of the political and critical representational terrain that Geography must negotiate if it is to contribute - as it can and should - to the fight 2 against AIDS.

This multi-media and discussion seminar critically examines key perspectives, economic and political processes, policy actors, and institutions involved in global environmental issues. Students analyze ecological, cultural, and social dimensions of international environmental concerns and governance as they have emerged in response to increased recognition of global environmental threats, globalization, and international contributions to understanding of these issues. The focus of the course is for students to engage and evaluate texts within the broad policy discourse of globalization, justice and the environment. Threats to Earth's environment have increasingly become globalized and in response to at least ten major global threats—including global warming, deforestation, population growth and persistent organic pollutants—countries, NGOs and corporations have signed hundreds of treaties, conventions and various other types of agreements designed to protect or at least mitigate and minimize damage to the environment. The course provides an overview of developments and patterns in the epistemological, political, social and economic dimensions of global environmental governance as they have emerged over the past three decades. We will also undertake a case study of the interactions of Brazilian environmental policy central to several global environmental threats, including global warming and climate change, land degradation, and freshwater pollution and scarcity.     The Presence of Performance and the Stakes of Serial Drama: Accrual, Transience, Companionship Elliott Logan MPhil (University of Queensland, 2013) BA, Hons (University of Queensland, 2009) BA (University of Queensland, 2007) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2018 School of Communication and Arts Abstract This thesis shows how performance is a critically neglected but crucial aspect of serial television drama as an art form. One of serial drama’s obvious storytelling attractions is its ability to involve viewers in relationships between characters over long periods of time. Such involvement takes place through a recurring structure of episodes and seasons, whose unfolding reflects the extensive, ongoing history through which interpersonal bonds form and develop, deepen and decay. The characters we watch onscreen are embodied and performed by actors. Television studies, however, has persistently overlooked screen performance, hampering appreciation of serial drama’s affinity with long-term relationships as a resource for aesthetic significance. Redressing such neglect, this thesis directs new critical attention to expressive stylistic relationships between serial form, screen performance, and the subject of companionship in some recent US serial dramas. The focus of that attention is a particular aesthetic quality: the provisional, which emerges through serial drama’s distinctive tension between permanence and transience. In the first chapter, I argue that the provisional is central to an affinity between screen performance, seriality in television drama, and companionship as an aspect of human life. Chapters Two and Three then show how the art of the provisional in particular series has been underappreciated due to television studies’ neglect of performance and expressiveness as dimensions of serial form in television fiction.

    SUBHANKAR BANERJEE I was born in 1967 in Berhampore, a small town near Kolkata, India. My early experiences in my tropical home in rural Bengal fostered my life long interest in the value of land and it’s resources. In the cinemas of these small towns, I came to know the work of brilliant Bengali filmmakers including, Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, and Ritwik Ghatak. I loved cinema and found their visual explorations of everyday life and larger social issues immensely inspiring. I asked my Great Uncle Bimal Mookerjee, a painter, to teach me how to paint. I created portraits and detailed rural scenes, but knew from growing up in a middle-income family that it would be nearly impossible for me to pursue a career in the arts. I chose instead the practical path of studying engineering in India and later earned master’s degrees in physics and computer science at New Mexico State University. In the New Mexican Desert, I fell in love with the open spaces of the American West. I hiked and backpacked frequently in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Utah, and bought a 35mm camera with which I began taking photographs. After finishing my graduate degrees in Physics and Computer Science, I moved to Seattle, Washington to take up a research job in the sciences. In the Pacific Northwest, my commitment to photography grew, and I photographed extensively during many outdoor trips in Washington, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming, California, New Hampshire, Vermont, Florida, British Columbia, Alberta, and Manitoba. In 2000, I decided to leave my scientific career behind and began a large-scale photography project in the American Arctic.

    AMC Hopes 'Breaking Bad' Fans Lawyer Up With 'Better Call Saul' 02.03.2015 Nearly a year and a half after the widely acclaimed series finale of AMC's beloved Breaking Bad, a new chapter is about to be written with spinoff prequel Better Call Saul. Expectations are high for the show, which reunites Bob Odenkirk's fan-favorite sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman (nee Jimmy McGill) with Breaking Bad co-creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould. Better Call Saul's campaign has been a marriage of moderation and deliberate escalation, a luxury AMC can take advantage of thanks to the show's pre-existing fanbase always hungry for information. AMC first teased the show with an 11-second promo way back on Sept. 21, and has since released a litany of sneak peeks, trailers and behind-the-scenes looks at the show, all of which have arrived almost weekly since November. As anticipation mounts, the promos have gotten longer and more in-depth, with extended trailers and detailed looks at the series hitting the Web in January. These promos have been the engine of AMC's extensive social media presence, but many have also aired across national cable and satellite networks. On Monday (Feb. 2), the latest of these, a "Meet the Characters" video featuring the cast and crew and introducing the Better Call Saul ensemble, arrived. AMC's Better Call Saul's marketing campaign mirrors the ubiquity of a small-town lawyer, writ large. Much like a real-life DUI attorney, Saul Goodman can be seen on billboards in Los Angeles and New York, with 2-sheets in subways and on buses in New York.
