BILLY LANGE Head Coach - 2nd Season

The 15th head coach in the storied history of Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball program, Billy Lange returns for his second season at Hawk Hill in 2020-21.

Named Saint Joseph’s head coach on March 28, 2019, Lange brought more than 23 years of sideline experience to the Hawks, most recently as assistant coach of the Philadelphia 76ers. Since he joined the Sixers in 2013, the team has rebuilt its culture, empha- sized player development and implemented a process that has led to their current success.

Lange’s college head coaching experience spans nine years with stints at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy. As Navy’s head coach from 2004 to 2011, the Midshipmen showed a marked improvement under Lange, as he led the squad to its first winning season in seven years during the 2007-08 campaign with a 16-14 record. Helped by a six-game winning streak, that squad went 9-5 in league play and finished second in the regular season. Lange was named the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year for his efforts, which also saw Greg Sprink earn Player of the Year honors, marking the only time a Midshipman has received that league’s award.

He served as head coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy from 2000 through 2001, where he compiled a 39-19 record and led the Mariners to the Skyline Conference regular-season title in each of his two seasons. In 2001, the USMMA also won the conference tournament title to secure a bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament and reach the Sweet 16, becoming the first team in program history to advance past the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Lange was named the New York Metropolitan Basketball Writers Division III Coach of the Year following that season.

A native of Haddon Heights, N.J., Lange began his coaching career with one season at his alma mater, Bishop Eustace Prep, suc- ceeding his father, Bill Lange, Sr., in the role. He then moved on to the collegiate level as an assistant coach under Naismith Hall of Fame coach Herb Magee at Philadelphia (now Jefferson) University. After two seasons with the Rams, he served as an assistant coach at La Salle University under Speedy Morris for one season before taking over at the USMMA.

Lange joined Jay Wright’s staff at Villanova as an assistant coach and coordinator of basketball operations for three seasons be- fore taking the head job in Annapolis. He returned to Villanova as the Wildcats’ associate head coach in 2011 before joining the 76ers in 2013.

Lange’s connection to Saint Joseph’s runs deep as his parents, Bill and Kathy, are both alumni, as is his brother, Mark. Lange’s wife, Alicia, served as the Hawks’ coordinator of academic services for student-athletes for five years in the early 2000’s.

A 1994 graduate of Rowan, he and Alicia are the parents of four sons – Will, Matt, Jake and Marc.

Returning to the lineup after missing 25 games last season with an injury, Saint Joseph’s Taylor Funk scored a career-high 28 points, but Auburn held off the Hawks in overtime, 96-91, in the second game of the Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off on Thursday.

How It Happened • Down by as many as 11 points in the second half, Saint Joseph’s fought back to tie the game on a pair of Jack Forrest free throws with 3:55 left in regulation. • After Auburn pushed its advantage back to three, 79-76, the Hawks took the lead for the first time since the early portion of the first half on a tap-in layup by Funk to make it 81-80 with just under a minute to play. • Funk extended Saint Joseph’s lead to 83-80 on a fastbreak layup with :37 to go. • After a pair of Auburn free throws made it a one-point game, Ryan Daly put SJU ahead 82-80 with a free throw. • Jaylin Williams answered with a dunk for the Tigers to tie the game with :13 to play. • Daly got a clean look for the win at the buzzer, but the ball missed its mark, sending the game to extra time. • Saint Joseph’s scored the opening basket of the extra frame on a Funk jumper and held a 91-90 edge at the 2:02, but Auburn scored the final six points of the contest to pull away with the win. GAME 2 • NOVEMBER 27, 2020 • SUNCOAST CREDIT UNION ARENA #6 KANSAS 94, SAINT JOSEPH’S 72

Saint Joseph’s Jack Forrest led three Hawks in double figures with 18 points, but #6 Kansas pulled away in the second half for a 94-72 victory in the final game of the Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off.

How It Happened • After a back-and-forth start, Saint Joseph’s opened its biggest lead, 27-20, on a layup by Ryan Daly at the 9:14 mark. • The Jayhawks answered with a 19-3 run to take a 39-30 edge on a Ochai Agbaji three-pointer. • Kansas carried over a 44-36 edge into the second half, but the Hawks came out with the hot hand as they scored the first 10 points of the period to take a 46-44 lead on a Daly layup just under two minutes in. • The Jayhawks answered back with an 8-3 spurt, but a bucket by Cameron Brown made it a one-point contest, 52-51. • Behind a 17-4 run, Kansas pushed ahead as it opened a 69-55 lead with 8:33 to play. • Saint Joseph’s would get within 12, but no closer as the Jayhawks pulled away for the win. 2020-21 Saint Joseph's Men's Basketball Page 1/1 Combined Team Statistics as of Dec 17, 2020 OVERALLAll gamesSTATISTICS
