A VERY WARM WELCOME TO YOU ALL And particularly to the officials, players and supporters of Tooting & who are here this afternoon for this Bostik League South Central Division fixture. We met in the reverse game back om the 18th August in a game which ended 0-0. More recently our visitors are on a run of 5 games unbeaten in the league since losing to Hayes & Yeading on 12th January and currently occupy 9th place in the league table with 38 points from their 24 games having won more points away from home than on their own ground. Last Saturday saw our game at called off late on as a result of a waterlogged pitch which meant that we then moved on to Wednesday evening and the visit of MK Dons in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup. Yet again we were missing several “regulars” from the line-up. The list of injuries has caused some concerns and Barts has taken steps to bring some new faces in to address this and we wish those that have joined a long and fruitful stay with us. Anyway, the lads on the pitch did the job and did it well enough to secure a victory and move us into the semi-final where we now know that we have another home tie and that our next opponents will be Slough Town of the National League – date to be arranged. Back to this afternoon now and full attention must be given to addressing what I am sure will be strong opposition from Tooting & Mitcham with much at stake for both clubs. Let’s hope for a well-contested game conducted in the right spirit. Many thanks for coming this evening and braving the elements and now for my usual closing plea to get behind the lads and support at all times – it really does make a difference and will do throughout the season! Terry Staines, Chairman

FROM THE DUGOUT Today’s match is a huge encounter for us, in the context of our challenge for the playoffs. Our opponents currently sit in 8th position and with only 8 points separating 2nd to 9th it adds even more importance to whenever teams in that group meet each other. Today in particular, with six of those eight teams facing each other, it could prove to be a pivotal weekend. We go into the game buoyed by our Berks & Bucks Quarter Final victory over MK Dons on Wednesday. I felt as though our performance fully warranted the victory and I am pleased for the players to have been able to progress into the semi-final, and we look forward to hosting our National League South neighbours Slough in due course. Tooting & Mitcham are a side that I tipped to be there or thereabouts at the beginning of the season, and their credentials were underlined in our 0-0 draw at their place. They come into the game on good form having lost only once in their last 10 league outings, against Hayes & Yeading, and I fully expect this to be another close encounter. They have a young side full of pace and in that respect, I think that we are quite similar. I’m looking forward to a keenly contested game. At this stage of the season we are just focused on making sure our performance levels are right, in the belief that if we do the points will follow. The injuries and spate of games will prove to be a challenge, but one we are determined to meet in pursuit of goal. I feel the squad is strong enough to cope and we will rotate our line-up because of the games in close proximity, with the expectation that it will keep our energy levels high. As always, your support will be invaluable, and I thank you in advance for that this afternoon. Barts

BERKS & BUCKS SENIOR CUP

MARLOW 1 – 0 MK DONS A young MK Dons team exited the Berks and Bucks FA Senior Cup at the Quarter Final stage after a 1-0 defeat to Marlow at Oak Tree Road. Adam Richards scored the only goal of the game on 15 minutes to send the Blues through to the last 4 of the competition at the expense of Edu Rubio's Dons. The Dons’ side included three young professionals in Finn Tapp, David Kasumu and Dylan Asonganyi, while the remainder of the starting XI was made up of players from his youth squad. The Dons started brightly and registered the first shot of the game in the fifth minute. Jay Bird’s looping cross was cleared away by the Marlow defence but only as far as Matthew Sorinola, whose long-range effort was saved. Following some early pressure from the Dons, Marlow went ahead with a quarter of an hour on the clock, taking advantage of a free- kick. Marlow Captain, Chris Ovenden, initially hit the crossbar with a header from the set-piece, but the loose ball found its way to Richards, who fired under Alfie Jones to hand Marlow the early advantage. Rubio’s team went in search of a reply and were presented with a chance when they were awarded a free-kick of their own in the 22nd minute. Asonganyi, went for goal but saw his effort blocked by the wall. The game ebbed and flowed but neither team were able to carve out any significant chances as the half progressed. The next notable opportunity falling to the visitors with five minutes to play in the half, but Sorinola couldn’t take advantage shooting high after a chipped pass from Kasumu. BERKS & BUCKS SENIOR CUP Simon Grant was called into action to produce a smart save from Asonganyi in the closing stages of the first period, while at the other end the Dons’ ‘keeper, Jones, denied Kelvin Bossman with a brave stop. The Dons went about levelling the scores right at the start of the second half, with Asonganyi firing an early shot over the bar following a quickly-taken free-kick. Moments later, Chris Ovenden found himself with a great chance to double the Blues’ advantage, after running through, unopposed, onto a low cross from Devontae Romeo. Fortunately for the Dons, Overs’ close-range effort was straight at the ‘keeper Jones. Martin almost made Marlow pay but, after working his way into the box, he was dispossessed by an excellent sliding tackle from Adam Richards. The Dons’ second-year scholar had another opportunity in the 57th minute, following some excellent solo work but the ever- reliable Simon Grant, kept out his low strike. Mark Bartley was forced into making some early changes as the Blues’ injury woes continued with Campbell, Chapple & Osei-Tutu making way for Edwards, Welch and Allen Bossman. Sandwiched between these changes Rubio brought on striker James Holmes to aid his attack. Shortly after his arrival, he almost connected with a whipped cross from Sorinola but was beaten to the ball by Grant. The visitors pressed for an equaliser in the final quarter of an hour, but the Blues held firm and came close to doubling their lead when Adam Richards fired a shot towards the top right-hand corner, but Alfie Jones kept the attempt out with a stunning diving save. Despite the late pressure, the Dons were unable to create enough to trouble the home defence, who were able to see out the game and send Marlow through to the semi-finals.

Partners: John Gabbitas, Stephen Robins, Margaret Furniss TOOTING & MITCHAM UTD – CLUB HISTORY Tooting & Mitcham United FC was formed in 1932 when two local sides, Tooting Town and Mitcham Wanderers amalgamated, the club remaining in the League until joining the Athenian League in 1937. In 1938 the was won for the first time by beating Dulwich Hamlet 2-1. Wartime then brought a mixture of friendly matches and a league called the South East Combination. The was lifted in 1943 when Dulwich Hamlet were defeated 5-4. When the Second World War ended the club returned to the Athenian League and were Champions in 1950 and 1955. They also reached the FA Cup First Round Proper for the first time in 1948 unluckily losing by a goal to nil at Millwall and in 1950 reached the First Round Proper again with their first ever home tie against Football League opposition Brighton & Hove Albion, losing 3-2. The club was invited to join the in 1956, the premier amateur league in the South, and they switched from playing in white shirts to black and white stripes. That season saw the club reach the FA Cup Second Round Proper losing to Queens Park Rangers. In the 1957-58 season they were crowned Isthmian League Champions but were hit by tragedy when star goalkeeper Dave Moore was killed in a car crash soon after the title was won. In season 1958-59 the club reached the 3rd round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in its history beating Football League clubs Bournemouth and Northampton Town. In the third round they were drawn at home to Nottingham Forest, one of the top clubs in the country, and led the First Division side 2-0 at half-time but a own goal and a very controversial penalty for handball enabled Forest to scramble a draw. In the replay the Midlands side won 3-0 played before a crowd of 42,362 and they went on to lift the FA Cup at Wembley. The 1959-60 campaign was one of the best in the club’s history the Isthmian League Championship was won for the second time and Tooting reached four Cup Finals, winning two. The London Senior Cup was lifted as Bromley were beaten 5-0 and the Surrey Senior Cup was also won when Tooting defeated Walton & Hersham 3-0, great striker and Northern Ireland International Paddy Hasty getting a hat-trick. Paddy would also play for the Great Britain Olympic team in the 1960 summer Olympics and TOOTING & MITCHAM UTD – CLUB HISTORY was the last player to score a goal for Team GB until 2012. Tooting were the first amateur side to reach the London Challenge Cup Final for over 30 years losing 2-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. In March 1962 the club switched on their brand-new floodlights and how bright they were, the game against Arsenal was a classic as the Gunners were beaten 4-2 in a never to be forgotten evening. The following season the team had a record 11-0 win over Welton Rovers in the Amateur Cup, the Tooting & Mitcham side containing several England Amateur Internationals. Young goalkeeper Alex Stepney was a local lad who had come through the Tooting ranks and at the end of the 1962-63 campaign he joined Millwall and later played for Chelsea, Manchester United and the full England side against Sweden, a proud moment for Tooting & Mitcham. Dario Gradi, who had an illustrious career as manager of Crewe Alexandra over a long period of time, also played for the Terrors in the early 1960’s. The 1974-75 season saw the club reach the FA Cup first round proper and a dream home tie with Crystal Palace. The Terrors took a first minute lead through Steve Grubb, but the Eagles hit back to win 2-1 in front of a 10,000 plus crowd at Sandy Lane. The following season the club under the guidance of Roy Dwight had their best ever run in the FA Cup reaching the 4th round proper. After beating Romford and away the Terrors had to travel again to Swindon Town in the Third Round and soon found ourselves 2-0 down but a dramatic fight back saw Tooting snatch a draw. In the replay at a packed Sandy Lane Tooting had a great 2-1 victory with Alan Ives scoring the winner after a fine solo run. In the 4th round the Terrors were drawn away yet again with a long trip to Bradford City and despite a brave performance lost 3-1. The club also had their best ever run in the FA Trophy reaching the quarter-final stage losing at eventual winners Scarborough by 1-0. The club won the Surrey Senior Cup three seasons on the trot in 1976, 1977 and 1978 being the first club to achieve this. In 1983-84 Tooting finished in the bottom two of the Isthmian League but were saved from relegation as Staines Town did not have the required ground grading. TOOTING & MITCHAM UTD – CLUB HISTORY However, there was no reprieve in the 1988-89 campaign when the club were relegated for the first time in its history. In season 1992-93 Tooting won its first trophy for many years at first team level when they lifted the Full Members Cup, beating by a goal to nil, scored by Micky Stephens. The 1996-97 season proved to be one of the worst in the club’s history resulting in relegation to the Second Division. By contrast the 2000-01 campaign was the club’s best for many years as the 6th round of the FA Vase was reached and defeat only came at the hands of eventual winners Taunton Town. Even more importantly under the guidance of Keith Boanas and Ian Hazel the Ryman League Division Two Championship was won despite an horrific backlog of fixtures. After many years of frustration and setbacks the club moved into its new home at Imperial Fields for the start of the 2002-03 season. After going close to promotion in 2005-06, losing to Tonbridge in the Play-offs, manager Richard Cadette was replaced by the hugely experienced Billy Smith (who was skipper of Tooting’s 1975-76 FA Cup side) and George Wakeling. In their first season the club won both the London Senior Cup and the Surrey Senior Cup, and a fantastic unbeaten league run saw Tooting reach the Play-off Final. Sadly, this proved to be a game too far as Hastings United won out by 2-0 at Imperial Fields. However, the 2007-08 season would see Tooting reach the Play-off Final again, this time against Cray Wanderers, and a Paul Vines goal resulted in a welcome return to the Premier Division after a gap of 19 years. The club also produced a superstar by the name of who came through the ranks and signed for Reading and has subsequently starred in the Championship for Nottingham Forest and is now a regular on the score sheet with West Ham United. In 2009-10 the team reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup after a gap of many years with a trip to Stockport County but in a torrential rainstorm went down to a 5-0 defeat. Sadly, at the end of the season Billy and George left the club and Mark Beard was subsequently appointed manager in May 2010. After a mediocre first season and a dismal start to the 2011–12 season Beard was relieved of his position in December 2011 TOOTING & MITCHAM UTD – CLUB HISTORY and former West Ham player Kenny Brown was appointed the new manager. However, the results got worse and Tooting were relegated at the end of the 2011–12 season. The following seasons saw a succession of managers (Roberto Forzoni, Jamie Martin and Phil Simpson) which cumulated in the club being relegated back to Division One at the end of the 2011-12 campaign. For the 2013-14 season former Terrors captain Craig Tanner was appointed First Team Manager and was assisted by Adam Moriarty. In their first season Tooting finished in a creditable 11th position. The 2014- 15 season again saw the Terrors finish in 11th spot and reach the London Senior Cup Final losing to Hendon, but at the end of the campaign the club parted company with Craig and Adam. The new management team for the 2015-16 season was former Reserve Team Boss Frank Wilson as Manager with Mark Hams as his assistant. In October Hams left the club to be replaced by Paul Dale who became Assistant Manager and First Team Coach having previously been a manager of the Army football team, also having served as Coach at Godalming Town. Tooting ended the 2015-16 season on a high beating Hendon by 2 - 0 in front of a crowd of 480 in the London Senior Cup Final at Imber Court. 2016-17 was the pinnacle of Tooting’s recent achievements, the club being crowned as Ryman South Champions after a superb season of entertaining football. The team amassed a total of 105 points with 120 goals scored and won the league on goal difference from Dorking Wanderers. They also broke numerous records on the way that included a 14-game winning streak in a run where of 15 matches undefeated. Star men for the team during that campaign were Billy Dunn with 25 goals and fellow striker Mike Dixon with 23. Manager Frank Wilson and his assistant Paul Dale were looking to consolidate that success in the new Bostik Premier division for the 2017-18 season. Paul subsequently left the club for a management role elsewhere and the Terrors highly respected U23 coach Ashley Bosah was appointed as Assistant Manager and Head Coach in his place.
