We met in the reverse game back om the 18th August in a game which ended 0-0. More recently our visitors are on a run of 5 games unbeaten in the league since losing to Hayes & Yeading on 12th January and currently occupy 9th place in the league table with 38 points from their 24 games having won more points away from home than on their own ground. Last Saturday saw our game at Molesey called off late on as a result of a waterlogged pitch which meant that we then moved on to Wednesday evening and the visit of MK Dons in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup. Yet again we were missing several “regulars” from the line-up. The list of injuries has caused some concerns and Barts has taken steps to bring some new faces in to address this and we wish those that have joined a long and fruitful stay with us. Anyway, the lads on the pitch did the job and did it well enough to secure a victory and move us into the semi-final where we now know that we have another home tie and that our next opponents will be Slough Town of the National League – date to be arranged. Back to this afternoon now and full attention must be given to addressing what I am sure will be strong opposition from Tooting & Mitcham with much at stake for both clubs. Let’s hope for a well-contested game conducted in the right spirit. Many thanks for coming this evening and braving the elements and now for my usual closing plea to get behind the lads and support at all times – it really does make a difference and will do throughout the season! New Builds ~ Extensions ~ Renovations As our company name suggests, we aim to deliver exceptional work to customers in Buckinghamshire and surrounding areas. Our mission is to exceed our customer expectations by delivering high spec building projects on time, within budget to an agreed specification. With all our projects the rewarding part is achieving the customer desired result. It gives us a great sense of achievement when turning customer vision into reality. FROM THE DUGOUT Today’s match is a huge encounter for us, in the context of our challenge for the playoffs. Our opponents currently sit in 8th position and with only 8 points separating 2nd to 9th it adds even more importance to whenever teams in that group meet each other. Today in particular, with six of those eight teams facing each other, it could prove to be a pivotal weekend. We go into the game buoyed by our Berks & Bucks Quarter Final victory over MK Dons on Wednesday. I felt as though our performance fully warranted the victory and I am pleased for the players to have been able to progress into the semi-final, and we look forward to hosting our National League South neighbours Slough in due course. Tooting & Mitcham are a side that I tipped to be there or thereabouts at the beginning of the season, and their credentials were underlined in our 0-0 draw at their place. They come into the game on good form having lost only once in their last 10 league outings, against Hayes & Yeading, and I fully expect this to be another close encounter. They have a young side full of pace and in that respect, I think that we are quite similar. I’m looking forward to a keenly contested game. At this stage of the season we are just focused on making sure our performance levels are right, in the belief that if we do the points will follow. The injuries and spate of games will prove to be a challenge, but one we are determined to meet in pursuit of goal. I feel the squad is strong enough to cope and we will rotate our line-up because of the games in close proximity, with the expectation that it will keep our energy levels high. As always, your support will be invaluable, and I thank you in advance for that this afternoon. The move to Upton Park came about when, in 1904, Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company owner Arnold Hills was having financial issues. Hills was unwilling to re-negotiate a deal for the club to remain at Memorial Grounds, meaning the Hammers needed to find a new place to call home. Upton Park was settled upon, where the club would play its football from the 1904/05 season right up until 2016. The stadium, which was originally named The Castle, was built next to and in the grounds of Green Street House. The pitch was laid on an area that had previously been used to grow cabbages and potatoes. The stadium originally consisted of a small West Stand, a covered terrace backing on to Priory Road and changing rooms placed in the north- west corner between the West Stand and North Bank. West Ham’s first game at Upton Park came on Thursday, 1 September 1904, when they beat long-standing rivals 15 THE BOLEYN’S Farewell Millwall 3-0 in front of 10,000 fans.

  • THE AMATEUR ERA (1897-1907) The
THE AMATEUR ERA (1897-1907) The founding of the club was the idea of Ralph Cole, a benefactor who was interested in the welfare of the local lads. The club, like many others, originally centred on a church; in this instance St Luke's Mission Church at the junction of Boulogne Road and Princess Road in Croydon. The inaugural meeting of the club was held in 1897 and it was attended by the above mentioned Ralph Cole together with H. Taylor, F. Worsfold Smith, Frank Chick, George Stockdale and A. Everett. The name of the club was chosen for the simple reason that St Luke's Mission was sited on ground that once formed part of what had been Croydon Common in earlier times. It was decided that the club would play in colours of gold and dark blue, although the next year saw a change to claret and white. George Stockdale was chosen as the club's first captain, with Frank Chick the club's first vice-captain. The club officials were Rev. C.A. Curgenven (Assistant Curate at Holy Saviour Church, to which St Luke's Mission was affiliated) as president and the above mentioned Frank Worsfold Smith as the honorary secretary. The fact that George Stockdale would have only been fourteen years old at the time evidences that this was very much a club for boys. This is the version of events set out in the club's handbook for the 1909-10 season, but contemporary records give cause to doubt the accuracy of this version. Firstly, the Holy Saviour parish magazines for 1897 make no mention of the club, nor do those of the years following.
