BUSINESS OF THE HOUSE Notices of Motions General Business Notices of Motions (General Notices) given. PRIVATE MEMBERS' STATEMENTS _______________ DANNY BUDERUS Mr TIM OWEN (Newcastle) [12.06 p.m.]: Today I reflect on the career of Danny Buderus, one of Newcastle's favourite sons. On Sunday I joined with thousands of adoring fans who had the pleasure of watching Danny Buderus run onto the grounds of Hunter Stadium for the final time. The club legend has had an illustrious career and I take this opportunity to reflect on some of his greatest achievements. The Taree United junior—a future captain of Australia, New South Wales and the Knights—burst onto the rugby league scene while attending St Francis Xavier's College, Hamilton. In 1995 and 1996 he toured with the Australian Schoolboys teams. Two years later, under the guidance of Mal Reilly, the 19-year-old made his Australian Rugby League debut against the now defunct South Queensland Crushers in round 3 of the 1997 season. Later that year the Knights went on to play their first grade grand final, but Buderus had to wait another five years before experiencing premiership glory, when in 2001 he starred in the club's 30-24 win over the Parramatta Eels. Earlier that year, 23-year-old Buderus had his first taste of representative football, playing in the annual Country versus City Origin match and also making his international debut for Australia. He represented his country every year until 2006, playing a total of 24 games for the Kangaroos. The following year, 2002, the hooker made his first appearance for New South Wales and represented the Blues in every game until he left for the English Super League in late 2008, playing a total of 21 games for New South Wales. In the same year, Buderus celebrated his 200th game for the red and blue. In 2003 the inspirational leader replaced injured Andrew Johns as captain and led New South Wales to victory in 2004. The inspirational leader holds the record for the most appearances as captain for the Blues and the most consecutive appearances for New South Wales. In 2004 Buderus became the third Knights player, after Paul Harragon and Andrew Johns, to captain Australia and during the Tri-Nations tournament he led the Kangaroos to a 44-8 victory over Great Britain. Much to the joy of Knights' members and supporters, the hooker was granted a release from his third and final year at Leeds to return home and finish his career where it all started. Buderus returned to the Knights in the same manner that he left: as an inspirational leader who was willing to put his body on the line for the team. His form earned him selection in the 2012 Country Origin side but, unfortunately, he was forced to withdraw due to injury. The standing captain signed a one-year contract extension for the 2013 season, but before returning to the field he faced another setback in round 3 which forced Buderus to undergo a second surgery on his back. Given the rehabilitation needed to recover from a second operation, most players would have considered retirement, but Danny was determined to finish his career on his own terms and returned to the field

    Danny Buderus NRL Legend, Assistant Coach & Keynote Speaker Danny Buderus, NRL legend and assistant coach of the Newcastle Knights, is a former Australian NRL international and New South Wales State of Origin representative hooker for the Newcastle Knights. In fact, Danny set a new record for the most games with the club as well as most appearances as captain of the New South Wales State of Origin team. Danny began his rugby league career in his hometown of Taree before being snapped up by Newcastle after trialling with both the Knights and St George. He made his first grade debut with Newcastle in 1997 and, by 2001, was playing for Country Origin, making his Test debut and touring with the Kangaroos. Over the following years, Danny was the recipient of a number of awards including Hooker of the Year for three consecutive years at the Dally M Awards. He also won Knights Player of the Year four times and the Knights’ Players’ Player of the Year trophy three times, an indication of the high esteem in which he was held by his club and team mates. In 2008, Danny announced that he had signed with the Leeds Rhinos for two years. His stint in the UK proved to be a successful one. In 2011, he captained the winning Exiles team in an International Origin game and also played in the Super League Grand Final for the victorious Leeds Rhinos. In 2012, Danny returned to the Knights to play under ‘super coach’ Wayne Bennett, much to the delight of NRL fans and all those involved in the game.

Wednesday 23rd June 2021 Owned and Loved by Locals Circulation 6000 N0.23 Knobbly the Pelican saved by team effort For the last decade, Knobbly the pelican, has made himself a resident of the Red Spot fish shop on Little Street in Forster. This might have something to do with his love of mullet! Last month, Tim Love (then Manager of Red Spot) noticed that poor Knobbly had a fishing line stuck in his throat. What happened next is an amazing chain of events that eventually resulted in a recovered Knobbly being released into the channel a few weeks later in front of all his rescuers. On that day, the 11th of May 2021, Tim saw at once that help was needed if Knobbly was to survive. He called the Sweet Pea Vet Clinic who gave him good advice on how to capture a pelican. Tim used a mullet to distract Knobbly while his colleague covered the pelican up with a sheet. Tim then scooped Knobbly up and took Below: Tim Love with Knobbly the Pelican.
