    Smarter on Crime, Better for Communities

    SMARTER on crime BETTER for communities Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and Speaker Lee Chatfield are joined today by a bipartisan group of seventeen Michigan Senators and Representatives sponsoring bills based on recommendations from the Michigan Joint Task Force on Jail and Pretrial Incarceration. The package aims to focus jail use and related taxpayer costs and collateral consequences on cases that involve a danger to the public. The bills address decision points throughout the justice system that contribute to Michigan’s county jail populations, balancing the goals of protecting the public and safeguarding the rights of all people. The Task Force found that Michigan’s jail population had tripled in just 35 years, that most admissions were for misdemeanors and low-level offenses, and that changes to state law could safely reduce jail populations, protect and support crime victims, and prioritize law enforcement and judicial resources for immediate threats to public safety. Inspired by The Rise and Fall of an Urban School System—which I title my dissertation after—I decided early in my graduate work to investigate what happened to Detroit’s school system after 1980. Thanks to Jeff’s mentorship, I quickly found a research topic that was deeply meaningful and interesting to the very end. He and his wife, Barbara Mirel, are also patrons of my husband’s music. Jeff was the adviser every graduate student hopes to have. The completion of this dissertation would not have been possible without Bob Bain courageously jumping into the middle of a project. I was so fortunate; Bob is one of the smartest people I have ever met. He modeled a way of thinking that I will take with me for the rest of my career.     ADVOCACY REPORT 2011-2012 January 2013 Dear LWVMI Member: This report highlights the advocacy activities of the League of Women Voters of Michigan during the 2011-2012 legislative session. Thanks to the hard work of the LWVMI Advocacy Committee and Board of Directors who made this possible. The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan political organization. We do not support or oppose political parties or candidates. The League does: Encourage informed and active participation in government Work to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and Influence public policy through education and advocacy. The League of Women Voters has two arms. One is an educational, tax-exempt organization that provides information on candidates and issues to voters as well as information about election and government to citizens. The other is the advocacy arm. While the League does not support or oppose candidates or parties, we do take positions on issues we have studied. The members of the League of Women Voters of Michigan have adopted positions on seventeen state governmental issues. The League uses these positions, as well as those adopted at the national League to take action at the state level. LWVMI and LWVUS positions are listed on each website. A list of legislation that LWVMI has taken positions on during the two-year legislative session is in this document, as well as the voting records for the MI Senators and Representatives on legislation LWVMI opposed or supported.
