2018 COLORADO FOOTBALL / SPRING GAME NOTES March 17, 2018 (Folsom Field, 1:00 p.m.) QUICKLY Today’s event, billed as the University of Colorado Spring Showcase, marks the second major scrimmage of the spring, as CU had a previous session on March 10 prior to today; the Buffs have also scrimmaged extensively at times during most of the practices, especially dealing with the red zone and situational scrimmages … The actual scrimmage itself will only last about an hour; the first portion will be assorted drills that will blend into different coverage for the Pac-12 Network; this is the third straight year of this format as the last actual “game” was in 2015 (more on the format below) ... This is the 12th practice in the spring of the 15 that are allowed by the NCAA; the Buffs will finish up with practices on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of next week … Prior to the game, there was a breakfast this morning with the alumni where the team’s spring awards were presented (list of recipients on page 2) … Also during the breakfast, representatives of the Be The Match Registry were on hand to present Mike MacIntyre with its Rod Carew Leadership Year Award (more on page 2) … CU will select its 2018 captains after the conclusion of spring drills … The season opener against Colorado State in Denver (7:00 p.m. at Mile High) is 166 days from today (Friday, Aug. 31). UNIFORMS At press time, the offense will wear gold helmets, black jerseys and gold pants; the defense will wear black helmets, white jerseys and black pants; the quarterbacks will wear all silver (grey), and the specialists will wear gold helmets and all white. FORMAT With some injuries and some thinness at a few positions, today’s format will basically be the standard Offense vs. Defense scrimmage. The first hour will be an assortment of drills, some 7-on-7, field goal and punt sessions, and some one-on-ones. At 1:00, the team will gather near the tunnel to the locker room and then take the field behind Ralphie just like on a normal game day. After the hour of drills, at approximately 2:00 the offense and defense will then head to their respective sidelines for the scrimmage, much of which will be situation-based. ON-THE-AIR Today’s events will be televised nationally for the fifth straight year by the Pac-12 Network, with Mike Crispino (play- by-play) and former Buff Jeremy Bloom (analyst) in town to call the action; it will air live on both the main Pac-12 Network and Pac- 12 Mountain. It will also be replayed numerous times in the coming months, including for the first time at 10:30 p.m. MDT Saturday night. Locally, the Colorado Football Network is handling the radio call (KDSP 760 AM), with Mark Johnson, Gary Barnett and Mike Pritchard behind the microphones. THE WOUNDED The Buffaloes had no spring-ending injuries over the first 11 practices, as those on the injury list had previous injuries and did not overly participate in spring drills (if at all). Post-Spring Surgeries As of now (knock on proverbial wood), none scheduled but four practices do remain. LOOKING AHEAD Here are the football reporting dates for this fall (tentative), but the listed item cannot occur prior to the date listed. The NCAA permits a maximum 29 on-field practice sessions. The tentative dates: August 1—Players report (p.m.) August 4—Media Day (tentative) August 27—First Day of Classes August 2—First practice August 6—Practice In Full Gear August 31—First Game: Colorado State (Denver) Fall/Thanksgiving Break is November 19-23, ahead of CU’s final regular season game at California (Nov. 24); classes end December 13 and finals are over December 19. PAC-12 FOOTBALL MEDIA DAYS The Pac-12 football summer media gathering will again span two days in Los Angeles at a site to be determined on July 25-26 (Loews Hollywood Hotel). Coaches and two players from each team will be present; the coaches at this point aren’t scheduled to do an East Coast ESPN blitz (Bristol) this year. REMAINING HOME EVENTS After today’s scrimmage and the Jerry Quiller Invitational (track) events, there are only a handful of home events remaining for CU athletics: LACROSSE: Southern California (April 6), Arizona State (April 8), Oregon (April 20); Pac 12-Championships (April 26-30; at Prentup Field/East Campus). It is named for Minnesota Twins Hall of Famer, Rod Carew, who raised national awareness of the need for marrow donors while searching for a donor for his daughter, Michelle. CU coach Mike MacIntyre started working with BTM while at San Jose State, and continued the program once arriving in Boulder. Annually during the spring, the football team canvasses campus and alerts students, faculty and staff to join the Be The Match Registry in the hopes they can be matched with some in need of a bone marrow transplant. He leaves behind a multitude of legacies certain never to be replicated.     Rick George was named athletic director at the University of Colorado on July 17, 2013, returning to Boulder where he helped play a role in the school’s first and only national championship in football some 23 years earlier. George, 59, came to Colorado from the Texas Rangers baseball club of the American League, where he was named chief operating officer on October 5, 2010 with a promotion to president of business operations in February 2013. He agreed to a 5-year contract at CU, and he officially started on the job on August 12, 2013. In June 2016, the Board of Regents approved a contract extension through 2020-21, and in June 2019, the Regents once again extended him through the 2023-24 academic and athletic year. He is just the sixth full-time athletic director in Colorado history, following in the footsteps of Harry Carlson (1927-65), Eddie Crowder (1965-84), Bill Marolt (1984-96), Dick Tharp (1996- 2004) and Mike Bohn (2005-13). Two others have bridged directors in interim capacities, Jack Lengyel (six months between Tharp and Bohn) and Ceal Barry (two months between Bohn and George). His list of achievements in his first 1,000 days in the position were many, but none more significant than shepherding through a $156 million Athletic Complex Expansion from creation through fruition, gaining approval from the Board of Regents and then raising nearly one-half of the estimated cost to initiate construction, which began May 12, 2014. The project was the core of the Sustainable Excellence Initiative (SEI), the jewel of which was a long-awaited indoor practice facility.

The Walter Camp Coach of the Year is selected by the nation’s 125 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors. Cutcliffe is the first Duke coach to receive the award, and the first honoree from the ACC since 2001 (Ralph Friedgen, Maryland). Under Cutcliffe’s direction, the 20th-ranked Blue Devils have set a school record with 10 victories and earned their first-ever berth in the Dr. Pepper ACC Championship Game. Duke clinched the Coastal Division title and championship game berth with a 27-25 victory over in-state rival North Carolina on November 30. Duke (10-2, 6-2 in the Coastal Division) will face top-ranked Florida State (12-0) on Saturday, December 7 in Charlotte, N.C. The Blue Devils enter the game with an eight-game winning streak – the program’s longest since 1941. In addition, the Blue Devils cracked the BCS standings for the first time this season, and were a perfect 4-0 in the month of November (after going 1-19 in the month from 2008 to 2012). Cutcliffe was hired as Duke’s 21st coach on December 15, 2007. Last season, he led the high- scoring Blue Devils to a school record 410 points (31.5 points per game) and a berth in the Belk Bowl – the program’s first bowl appearance since 1994.

Bobby Bowden, Tom Osborne, Frank Broyles, John Cooper, Fisher DeBerry, Bo Schembechler, Terry Donahue, Vince Dooley, Pat Dye, LaVell Edwards, Don James, Hayden Fry, John Ralston, Dick MacPherson, Don Nehlen, John Robinson, Bill Snyder, R.C. Slocum, Gene Stallings, George Welsh, Frank Kush, Bobby Ross…and Bill Mallory. Bobby Ross and Bill are the two non-HOF coaches. Everyone of our Legends Poll coaches believe Bill Mallory belongs in the HOF.
