TREASURES REVEALED in Kirklees 2010

Saturday 29th May – Sunday 6th June 2010

A nine-day festival celebrating our hidden multi-faith treasures

FESTIVAL GUIDE Introduction

TREASURES REVEALED in Kirklees 2010 ver wondered what’s inside a EMosque, Church, Hindu Temple, Sikh Gurdwara or Buddhist Centre? Places of worship have been at the heart of our communities for thousands of years and continue to play a vitally important social, economic, and spiritual role in our modern society. For many people faith is a way of life, giving them a sense of belonging, identity and a sense of the common values of selfl essness and service which bind humankind. Faith can promote understanding and respect of others and nourishes that personal spiritual dimension which helps to give meaning, purpose and hope to our lives. Kirklees Faiths Forum supports and encourages faith and interfaith groups across Kirklees. Through the Treasures Revealed partnership we extend a warm welcome to local residents and visitors. So why not pay us a visit? You may just fi nd a hidden treasure or two for yourself …

Roadside 1 All Saints Church, Church Lane, Clayton West, Huddersfi eld, HD8 9NT Reverend Joy Cousans orGillian Hamer 01484 862321 [email protected] All Saints’ Church opened in 1875 to serve the local community and is part of the ancient parish of High Hoyland. It contains stained glass windows by Charles Kempe, a beautiful screen behind the altar celebrating Celtic Saints and the Wintour Memorial commemorating the Battle of Jutland. The pulpit is made of Caen stone supported by alabaster pillars and was given in memory of Revd. F.T.Wintour, Rector of the parish from 1867 to 1898. There is also a board with the names of the Rectors of High Hoyland dating back to the 12th Century. For some of the time there are 2 Rectors shown on the board, as the church was left to the founder’s 2 daughters and each had the right to present a Rector. All the carvings in the church were made by local craftsmen.

2 All Saints Church, Towngate, Netherthong, Holmfi rth, HD9 3EJ Yvonne Hutson (secretary) 01484 685625 [email protected] All Saints’ Church is situated in the centre of this Pennine Hill village, 2 miles from Holmfi rth. There have been alterations over the years, the most recent being meeting rooms, kitchens and toilets incorporated within the building. There is an attractive churchyard with interesting gravestones, beautiful trees and extensive views over the local countryside. Many family historians are interested in the rolls of honour from WW1 and the burial register for the graveyard, which include many of those who died in the workhouse, situated on the edge of the village of Deanhouse.

We cater for both tradtitional and modern styles of worship by following a varied pattern with both a robed choir and a music group. The building has some fi ne stained glass, a sculptured reredos of the Last Supper, a stone credence and font and a high pulpit more suited to a previous age. Various groups, both secular and church use the building during the week and we are always looking for ways to forge connections with the community.

The foundation stone was laid in 1823. The church was consecrated in 1827. The church is set in a large churchyard containing graves of historical interest. Some of the stained glass windows are considered valuable works of art by contemporary 19th century craftsmen. The font was constructed from stone from the original pulpit which was replaced by a timber pulpit, with carved fi gures of the twelve apostles.

44 In Church car park opposite 31 St John’s Church, Church Lane Kirkheaton, Huddersfi eld HD5 0BH Linda Barraclough, Parish Administrator 01484 531449 offi [email protected] St John’s is a Saxon foundation and a Grade II* Listed building. The oldest parts are the14th Century Beaumont Chapel, with monuments to the Beaumont family, including the infamous ‘Black Dick’, and the 15th Century Tower. There is the original Norman Font, a 12th cent gravestone of the De Heton family and much good Victorian stained glass (all dating from after the fi re of 1886). There is also the only WW1 and WW2 War Memorial in Kirkheaton. There is a well-preserved graveyard, the earliest gravestone being 1624. In the graveyard is the monument to the 17 children who perished in the Atkinson Mill fi re of 1818, which became a cause for Richard Ostler and his group. Immediately opposite is the Beaumont Arms (still known to many by its earlier name of the ‘Kirkstile’). This was formerly a ‘church house’ and is a Grade 1 Listed building.

At Croft House, Upper Hopton 32 St John’s, Hopton Hall Lane, Upper Hopton, Mirfi eld, WF14 8HL Chris Breare 01924 505790 [email protected] The style of architecture is deceptive as the building was intended to blend well with the neighbouring Hopton Hall, and thus it takes on the appearance of a 15th century church. The interior fi ttings also carry on this illusion, with many later additions appearing like they’ve been there for centuries. In 1904, the churchyard was extended up to where the archway now stands. For more information visit www.cofe-mirfi eld.org.uk At the rear of the Parish Hall, adjacent to the Church

33 St Mark’s Parish Church, Longwood Gate, Huddersfi eld, HD3 4HS Linda Barker 01484 646266 [email protected] St. Mark’s has beautiful stained glass windows. One of these is dedicated to Mary Sumner, founder of the Mother’s Union. It is said to be the only window of its kind in the country. A second unique window depicts Richard Oastler (1789-1861), the famous campaigner for the rights of working children. Situated on the West wall is a large memorial window. Worthy of note is a Biggin Hill plaque in memory of Squadron Leader Guy Turner, a former choirboy of St. Mark’s. Children enjoy searching for the ‘Thompson’ mice on various pieces of furniture.

34 St. Mary the Blessed Virgin, Spen Lane, Gomersal, Cleckheaton BD19 4LS Solveig Rawlings – Church Warden 01274 873256 [email protected] St Mary’s church is situated in the village of Gomersal, which is part of the Spen Valley area. The village history has links to the “Brontes of Haworth”, with Anne Taylor being buried in the churchyard. The church was built in 1851, with an Epiphany chapel added in 1969. In 2004 the church was reordered and the cleaning of the stonework has brought to light some very interesting features with fi ne examples of Victorian craftsmanship including a lovely refurbished font and examples of the work of the Mouseman, Robert Thompson, of Kirby.

39 St Paul’s Church, Marsh Lane, Shepley, HD8 8AE Doreen Halliwell – Former Church Warden 01484 603798 [email protected] Victorian Building. Attractive stained glass window of St Paul at the heart of the village – sensitively modernised. St Paul’s was consecrated in 1848 and like many Victorian village churches is of a simple design. The architect was William Wallen who had designed many buildings in the Huddersfi eld area. The church is built of local stone and has a bell cote containing two bells. The chancel was added in 1868 and extended into the nave in 1890. There are several stained glass windows, noticeably the east window which depicts scenes from the life of St Paul. St Paul’s stands in the centre of the village and has been altered over the years to suit the worship pattern of the time. Moving forward remains our aim, whilst still retaining our sense of history.

During the nineteenth century several important developments took place regarding the building, including the construction of a large two storey chapel. Due to serious fabric problems the chapel was demolished in the late 1960’s. The present building, erected in 1910, was originally designed to be the Sunday school.
