Since the beginning of December, a new injection molding machine at the Attendorn site has been producing large-sized parts from 90 to 250 mm. aquatherm products can be found in soccer stadiums around the world, including Qatar, where preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup are in full swing. The manufacturer of polypropylene piping systems headquartered in Attendorn was once again listed in the world market leader index of the Henri B. Meier Entrepre- neurial School of the University of St. Gallen and the Aca- demy of German World Market Leaders (ADWM). Since 2016, the family business has been represented there. There are up to 1500 world market leaders in Germany - but not every company deserves the title, states Prof. Dr. med. Christoph Müller from the HBM Entrepreneurship School, which is part of the University of St. Gallen. For this reason, he sets strict criteria that must be met in order to obtain a place in the world market leader index of the prestigious university. These include at least 50 percent ownership management in Germany, Austria or Switzer- land, activities on at least three out of six continents with own production and / or sales companies, annual sales of at least 50 million euros, market leadership as No. 1 or No. 2 in the relevant world market segment, and an export share of at least 50 percent of sales. With a clamping force of 1000 tons and a maximum injection weight of nine kilograms, it is one of the largest machines that has found its place in the new injection molding department, which opened in the summer. In total, 35 machines now manufacture fi ttings in different dimensions. „Thanks to the machine, which has been tailored to our products, we can serve the market even better,“ explains Stefan Kruse, head of the injection molding department. Edition No. 1 2019 | 7th January 2019 TECH [email protected] AQUATHERM IS PART OF THE WORLD CUP PRODUCTS ALREADY INSTALLED IN THREE STADIUMS IN QATAR Preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar are in full swing. aquatherm is in the midst of it and has already instal- led its products in three soccer stadiums. The Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar‘s capital Doha has already been renovated: it now offers space for 40,000 visitors and was equipped with aquatherm green pipe in the dimensions of 20 to 250 mm in the area of drinking water supply and public facilities. The Al Bayt Stadium will be rebuilt in Al Khor, about 50 kilo- meters north of Doha. Here aquatherm green pipe was instal- led as well, in this case in the dimensions 20-355 mm. And also in the Ras Abu Aboud Stadium, also in Doha, the entire drinking water supply is realized with aquatherm pipes. Ano- ther sports facility, the Lusail Iconic Stadium, will be equip- ped with aquatherm blue pipe for refrigeration in addition to aquatherm green pipe. Volker Köhler, aquatherm Sales Area Manager for Africa and the Middle East, got a fi rst impression of the construction work on site: „I am very satisfi ed with the results so far and I am convinced that the 2022 World Cup will be a very special event.“ Volker Köhler has visited the Al Bayt Stadium to get a picture of the construction work. Among those nations, Qatar stands out for being the first Arab country to host a FIFA World Cup. With the rationale of diversifying its economy and promoting itself as a tourist destination, Doha, its capital city, has recently staged many international events and is literally under construction, undergoing important changes in terms of transportation, infrastructure, and sports facilities. While hosting cities and organising committees often promote the supposed benefits of a mega event, experience shows an opposite trend: outcomes from staging major events are mostly harmful, and their effects are planned to last only for a short time. When it comes to sporting events sites, stadiums, and their precincts, they usually become under-used and very costly to maintain in a very short time, and their precincts are completely abandoned. THE JOURNAL OF PUBLIC SPACE THE JOURNAL What will be the destiny of the 2022 World Cup stadiums and infrastructure? How can this event be leveraged as a momentum of experimentation and sustainable growth of its capital city, Doha? Is it possible to transform the Cup’s stadiums and precincts into liveable, enjoyable and well-integrated public spaces and neighbourhoods? It is a unique opportunity to host a universal event and leave a sustainable positive legacy for the country. However, the preparation, execution, and after-effects of such events are challenging initiatives with significant long-term impacts on the economy, society, and environment in the hosting country and nearby region. This study addresses the intersection between mega sports events and sustainability, to systematically compare and learn from past mega-events and apply that to the case of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. The Qatari bid proposed a new FIFA Men’s World Cup (WC) spatial compact model around just one city area and the goal of achieving the first carbon-neutral WC. Herein, the challenges, opportunities, and progress in this scenario are evaluated accordingly, showing that local organizers are applying green technologies, urban development concepts, and strongly upholding the idea of legacies based on the Qatar National Vision 2030, which envisions sustainable development of the country.
