Jan 15 #1 Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press Sherlockians (and Holmesians) gathered in New York to celebrate the Great Detective's 161st birthday during the long weekend from Jan. 7 to Jan. 11. The festivities began with the traditional ASH Wednesday dinner sponsored by The Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes at Annie Moore's, and continued with the Christopher Morley Walk led by Jim Cox and Dore Nash on Thursday morn- ing, followed by the usual lunch at McSorley's. The Baker Street Irregulars' Distinguished Speaker at the Midtown Executive Club on Thursday evening was Alan Bradley, co-author of MS. HOLMES OF BAKER STREET (2004), and author of the award-winning "Flavia de Luce" series; the title of his talk was "Ha! The Stars Are Out and the Wind Has Fallen" (his paper will be published in the next issue of The Baker Street Journal). The William Gillette Luncheon at Moran's Restaurant was well attended, as always, and the Friends of Bogie's at Baker Street (Paul Singleton and An- drew Joffe) entertained the audience with an updated version of "The Sher- lock Holmes Cable Network" (2000). The luncheon also was the occasion for Al Gregory's presentation of the annual Jan Whimsey Award (named in memory of his wife Jan Stauber), which honors the most whimsical piece in The Ser- pentine Muse last year: the winner (Jenn Eaker) received a certificate and a check for the Canonical sum of $221.17. And Otto Penzler's traditional open house at the Mysterious Bookshop provided the usual opportunities to browse and buy.

“WHAT ONE MAN CAN INVENT, ANOTHER CAN DISCOVER” MUSIC AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF SHERLOCK HOLMES FROM LITERARY GENTLEMAN DETECTIVE TO ON-SCREEN ROMANTIC GENIUS By Emily Michelle Baumgart A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Musicology – Master of Arts 2015 ABSTRACT “WHAT ONE MAN CAN INVENT, ANOTHER CAN DISCOVER” MUSIC AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF SHERLOCK HOLMES FROM LITERARY GENTLEMAN DETECTIVE TO ON-SCREEN ROMANTIC GENIUS By Emily Michelle Baumgart Arguably one of the most famous literary characters of all time, Sherlock Holmes has appeared in numerous forms of media since his inception in 1887. With the recent growth of on-screen adaptations in both film and serial television forms, there is much new material to be analyzed and discussed. However, recent adaptations have begun exploring new reimaginings of Holmes, discarding his beginnings as the Victorian Gentleman Detective to create a much more flawed and multi-faceted character. Using Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original work as a reference point, this study explores how recent adaptors use both Holmes’s diegetic violin performance and extra-diegetic music. Not only does music in these screen adaptations take the role of narrative agent, it moreover serves to place the character of Holmes into the Romantic Genius archetype. Copyright by EMILY MICHELLE BAUMGART 2015 .ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am incredibly grateful to my advisor Dr. Kevin Bartig for his expertise, guidance, patience and good humor while helping me complete this document. Thank you also to my committee members Dr. Joanna Bosse and Dr. Michael Largey for their new perspectives and ideas.

  • University of Minnesota Libraries Department of Special Collections and Rare Books
University of Minnesota Libraries Department of Special Collections and Rare Books A River Runs By It: Holmes and Doyle in Minnesota An Exhibit from the Sherlock Holmes Collections Elmer L. Andersen Library June 3 — August 27, 2004 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle never visited Minnesota. The closest he came was Milwaukee, during a lecture tour in 1894, and Thunder Bay, Ontario, during two later trips through the United States and Canada. Phillip Bergem, an active member of the local Sherlockian society, The Norwegian Explorers, provides a bit of background on the Canadian adventure: … Arthur Conan Doyle … came close and he did mention Minneapolis and St. Paul in his autobiography, Memories and Adventures (p. 301 of the Hodder & Stoughton edition). In a chapter where he discusses his trip to Canada in 1914, he mentioned his visit to the cities of Port Arthur and Fort William in Ontario, which merged in 1970 to become Thunder Bay. "The twin cities of Fort William and Port Arthur, at the head of Lake Superior, form the most growing community of Canada. They call them twin cities, but I expect, like their Siamese predecessors, they will grow into one. Already the suburbs join each other, though proximity does not always lead to amalgamation or even to cordiality, as in the adjacent towns of St. Paul and Minneapolis. When the little American boy was asked in Sunday school who persecuted Saint Paul, he ‘guessed it was Minneapolis.’ " The joke came about as a result of intense rivalry between Minneapolis and St. Paul in the late 1800s and early 1900s, both vying to become the primary city in Minnesota.

  • A Holmes and Doyle Bibliography
A Holmes and Doyle Bibliography Volume 7 Audio/Visual Materials Alphabetical Listing Compiled by Timothy J. Johnson Minneapolis High Coffee Press 2018 A Holmes & Doyle Bibliography Vol. 7, Audio/Visual Materials, Alphabetical Listing INTRODUCTION This bibliography is a work in progress. It attempts to update Ronald B. De Waal’s comprehensive bibliography, The Universal Sherlock Holmes, but does not claim to be exhaustive in content. New works are continually discovered and added to this bibliography. Readers and researchers are invited to suggest additional content. This volume contains an alphabetical listing of audio-visual materials. Coverage of this material begins around 1994, the final year covered by De Waal's bibliography, but may not yet be totally up-to-date (given the ongoing nature of this bibliography). It is hoped that other titles will be added at a later date. The first volume in this supplement focuses on monographic and serial titles, arranged alphabetically by author or main entry. The second volume presents the exact same information arranged by subject. The third volume focuses on the periodical literature of Doyle and Holmes, listing individual articles alphabetically. The fourth volume includes "core" or "primary" citations from the periodical literature. The fifth volume includes "passing" or "secondary" references to Doyle or Holmes in the periodical literature. The sixth volume organizes the periodical literature according to De Waal's original categories. As the bibliography expands, additional annotations will be provided in order to give the researcher a better idea on the exact Holmesian or Doylean reference contained in each article. The compiler wishes to thank Peter E.

INFLUENCES OF THE SCOTTISH ENLIGHTENMENT IN THE SHERLOCK HOLMES STORIES OF SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE by HELEN M. CAULEY Under the Direction of Lynée Gaillet, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Scotland in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries produced some of the most renowned thinkers and scholars whose works are still widely read and admired. This cadre of enlightened philosophers established a framework for critical thinking and reasoning, as well as a foundation for composition studies. One of the literary geniuses whose work drew on this expertise was Arthur Conan Doyle, best known for giving the world Sherlock Holmes in the late 1880s. But Doyle’s contributions are more than mere stories; the Edinburgh native endowed his character with the philosophy he himself gleaned growing up in a culture that prized reasoning, critical thinking, elocution, and elegant composition. This dissertation explores the influences Doyle drew from the great minds of the Scottish Enlightenment and connects them to the character of Sherlock Holmes.

Characters like Samuel Richardson’s Pamela or Charles Dickens’ Fagan, famous (or infamous) at their time of publication, may have retained the recognition of academia, but are not much more than literary trivia to the general public. However, a few characters have managed not only to maintain their original fame, but even to expand it over the years since their original publications.
