But older, more fragile breeds can be intensely aromatic and delicious. If only more growers would produce them. (David Karp / For The Times / July 1, 2009) By David Karp, Special to the Los Angeles Times April 16, 2010 The mild climate along California's coast enables its strawberry growers to dominate commercial production of this fruit; last year they accounted for some 88% of the nation's crop. For strawberry lovers, that's both a blessing, of abundance and reasonable prices, and a curse, because local growers are focused almost exclusively on varieties suited to industrial production. Compared with other states where local sales predominate, California strawberry breeders prioritize firmness and long shelf life, often at the expense of flavor. Our farmers market growers can offer riper fruit than is harvested for supermarkets, but they are stuck using commercial varieties because no one in California is breeding new varieties suited for direct sales and nurseries, for the most part, don't want to be bothered with older varieties. That's a shame because there's a whole world of different and extraordinary flavors that could await enterprising growers and their customers. Last week, I wrote a buying guide to farmers market strawberries focused on standard varieties from the University of California breeding program. Let us now consider specialty and exotic strawberry varieties, both from farmers markets and further afield. -
Development and Use of Molecular Tools in Fragaria

Title: Development and Use of Molecular Tools in Fragaria Abstract approved: Nahla V. Bassil This dissertation describes the application and development of molecular tools that have great potential for use in studying variation in strawberry germplasm. The first study evaluated 91 microsatellite (simple sequence repeat, SSR) markers for transferability in 22 Fragaria species and their utility in fingerprinting octoploid strawberries. Out of the transferable markers, a reduced set of four SSRs was developed based on polymorphism, multiplexing ability, reproducibility and ease of scoring. Unique SSR fingerprints were obtained for over 175 Fragaria samples representing 22 Fragaria species used in the study. Testing of two molecular markers linked to the red stele and anthracnose resistances identified potential sources of resistance in previously untested genotypes. Further characterization of these accessions is warranted to validate resistance and usefulness in breeding. In the second study, 20 SSRs polymorphic in wild Asian diploids, F. iinumae and F. nipponica, from Hokkaido, Japan were selected for genetic analysis of 137 accessions from 22 locations. Principal coordinate analysis followed by non-parametric modal clustering grouped accessions into two groups representing the two species. Further clustering within the groups resulted in 10 groups (7-F. iinumae, 3-F. nipponica) that suggest lineages representative of the diversity in Hokkaido, Japan. The third study tested plant DNA barcodes, the nuclear ribosomal Internal Transcribed and the chloroplast PsbA-trnH spacers, for Fragaria species identification. The ‘barcoding gap’, between within species and between species variation, was absent and prevented identification of Fragaria species. -

Division of Fruit and Vegetable Crops and Diseases, Bureau of Plant Industry JL HE strawberry ctinae from North Amoricíi, and some people think it is delicious enough to bo a fair exchange for many of the fruits America has received from other parts of the world. Much of the work of developing the cultivated varieties has also been done in the United States; but so universal is the appeal of the strawberry that it is receiving the devoted attention of plant breeders in such remote lands as England, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (47) ^, and Japan (33,34,35,36). The cultivated strawberry is definitely a product of plant breeding and is relatively young. The commercial development of this fruit has come principally since the Civil War, and most strawberry varie- ties now grown have originated within the past 45 years. Seventy years ago the straw^berry w'as produced almost entirely near a few of the large cities. Now it is produced commercially in every State in the United States, as w^ell as in the interior of Alaska. The introduction of improved varieties has been responsible for the steadily widening commercial production. When the first productive firm-fruited variety, Wilson, was introduced about 75 years ago, it became possible to grow the strawberry as far south as Florida and^ Louisiana. The hardy Dunlap, introduced about 35 years ago, made it reasonably safe to grow straw^berries in northern Michigan, northern Maine, and parts of Canada. Later the origination of suitable high-quality varieties in Alaska made it possible to raise strawberries commercially even in that northern region. -
Introduction to Species Strawberry Species
1 STRAWBERRY SPECIES INTRODUCTION TO SPECIES Numerous species of strawberries are found in the temperate zones of the world. Only a few have contributed directly to the ancestry of the cultivated types, but all are an important component of our natural environment. The strawberry belongs to the family Rosaceae in the genus Fragaria. Its closest rela- tives are Duchesnea Smith and Potentilla L. Species are found at six ploidy levels in Fragaria (Table 1.1; Fig. 1.1). The most widely distributed native species, Fragaria vesca, has 14 chromosomes and is considered to be a diploid. The most commonly cultivated strawberry, Fragaria × ananassa, is an octoploid with 56 chromosomes. Interploid crosses are often quite difficult, but species with the same ploidy level can often be suc- cessfully crossed. In fact, F. × ananassa is a hybrid of two New World species, Fragaria chiloensis (L.) Duch. and Fragaria virginiana Duch. (see below). There are 13 diploid and 12 polyploid species of Fragaria now recog- nized (Table 1.1). Although a large number of the strawberry species are perfect flowered, several have separate genders. Some are dioecious and are composed of pistillate plants that produce no viable pollen and func- tion only as females, and some are staminate male plants that produce no fruit and serve only as a source of pollen (Fig. 1.2). The perfect-flowered types vary in their out-crossing rates from self-incompatible to compat- ible (Table 1.1). Isozyme inheritance data have indicated that California F. vesca is predominantly a selfing species (Arulsekar and Bringhurst, 1981), although occasional females are found in European populations (Staudt, 1989; Irkaeva et al., 1993; Irkaeva and Ankudinova, 1994). -
Strawberry Crop Vulnerability Statement
USDA Fragaria Crop Vulnerability Statement 2017 Summary In 2014, about 8.1 million tonnes of strawberries, Fragaria L., were produced worldwide (FAOSTAT 2017). Strawberries are an economically important crop in the US. At 2.8 billion dollars, the US 2014 strawberry crop was valued second only to grapes among noncitrus fruits (USDA-NASS 2015). After China, the US is the second largest producer with approximately 17% of the world’s crop. California leads the nation in strawberry production with 91% of US strawberries produced on 68% of US strawberry production area, followed by Florida, the leading producer from December through February, with 7% of the crop from 18% of the US strawberry fields (USDA-NASS 2015). However, strawberries are grown widely throughout the US for a couple of reasons. They are highly perishable (Mitcham 2002) so that locally-grown strawberries are particularly valued by some consumers. They also are a valuable crop for growers at a national average of $46,737 gross per acre, ranging from $7,200 per acre in Pennsylvania to $59,850 in California (USDA-NASS 2015). The high value of strawberries is due in part because of their popularity. Strawberries rank as the fifth most popular fresh-market fruit in the United States (USDA-ERS 2012), with annual per capita consumption increasing steadily to 3.62 kg from 2002 to 2013 (USDA-ERS 2016). Strawberry species have a complex background including natural diploid, tetraploid, pentaploid, hexaploid, octoploid, enneaploid, and decaploid genomes. Centers for strawberry species diversity include Eurasia and North and South America. The primary cultivated gene pool is octoploid, and the hybrid berry that dominates the commercial market has only been developed within the last 260 years. -

The habitats covered by the report include dry-site balds (small openings on slopes within forested landscapes) dominated by herbaceous vegetation and/or dwarf-shrubs, as well as those portions of coastal bluffs dominated by herbaceous vegetation. These plant communities are significant for biodiversity conservation because within a very small relative area they host a diverse array of plant taxa that do not occur in most habitats of western Washington (a relatively high percentage of the total flora for the region in a very small area), and because some animal species, especially butterflies, of particular concern are confined to these or closely similar habitats. The report defines these ecological systems in relation to vegetation, physical environment, and natural disturbance processes. They appear to be some of the driest habitats in western Washington that are dominated by vascular plants. Balds habitats are characterized by their low-growing vegetation, relatively shallow soils, relatively dry topographic positions, and relatively sunny aspects in comparison to the full range of physical environments in western Washington. -

ABSTRACT JACOBS, RAYMOND LEO, III. Inheritance of Rate-Limiting Foliar Resistance to Anthracnose Crown Rot and Fruit Rot in Cultivated Strawberry. (Under the direction of Dr. Jeremy A. Pattison and Dr. G. Craig Yencho.) Anthracnose crown rot and fruit rot caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and C. acutatum are two of the most prominent and destructive diseases of cultivated strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne). Both species are capable of establishing hemibiotrophic infections (HBI) in leaf tissue, encouraging undetected dissemination of diseased nursery plants to fruit production fields and inciting subsequent crown- and fruit-rotting epidemics. The purpose of this research was to explore a novel mechanism in strawberry foliage, which may confer rate-limiting resistance to multiple Colletotrichum species in that tissue. Germplasm from the NC State strawberry breeding program were screened for resistance to C. gloeosporioides HBI. Preliminary variation in resistance and significant differences among genotypes were observed. Methods were developed to increase the accuracy and precision of percent sporulating leaf area (PSLA) measurements, including the use of imaging software for quantification of PSLA. Direct visual estimates were strongly correlated (r=0.91) to image-based quantification of PSLA, but the accuracy of visual estimation varied with different patterns of sporulation and tended to underestimate higher infection severities. A larger panel of 18 cultivars and NC State selections were screened for resistance to hemibiotrophic foliar infections of both C. gloeosporioides and C. acutatum. Genotype PSLA means were significantly different and ranged from 8.5% to 26.5%, though means separation was poor for moderate genotypes. These 18 genotypes were also evaluated for resistance to anthracnose crown rot (ACR) by applying C. -

Waitrose Exclusively Presents Pineberries: Set to Be Cream of the Summer Crop
Waitrose exclusively presents Pineberries: set to be cream of the summer crop Today (Wednesday 31st March) Waitrose launches pineberries - a Alice in Wonderland- style fruit. With British summer time officially here Waitrose believes this new berry, which displays characteristics of both strawberries and pineapples, will fly off the shelves. Despite their extraordinary smell and taste similar to a pineapple, pineberries are still strawberries. The tiny berries, which are white and covered in red pips, have the same genetic make-up as the common strawberry. It is their fresh, juicy, sweet and acid flavour with a highly aromatic smell - more akin to a pineapple - that inspired the name ‘pineberries’. Waitrose is the first supermarket to sell pineberries in the UK. They will be available in 45 stores nationwide for the next five weeks while they are in season. Originating in South America, the pineberry started life as a wild variety of strawberry. It was threatened with extinction until seven years ago when Dutch farmers began growing it on a commercial level. Each pineberry is smaller than a common strawberry measuring between 15 to 23 mm. They are grown in glasshouses, growing on coir like other strawberries. They begin life as green berries, then become slightly white. By the time its deep laying seeds turn dark red this white fruit is ripe. Each pineberry punnet will weigh 125g and for an introductory period will retail for£2.99 until 13th April 2010. Subsequently, the pineberry punnet will be £3.99. Nicki Baggott, fruit buyer for Waitrose, says: “Pineberries offer our customers the chance to add a new fruit into their diet and the berries bright appearance can add an unusual decoration to sweet dishes.
