Out of the office

Among Thomas Tredway’s closest friends is Arthur Mampel, a retired pastor and published poet who lives in Seattle. Hearing the campus legend that the president sometimes used his win- dow as an escape hatch prompted the following poem, which appeared in Snapshots (Motecurb Publishing, 1984).

Feathers The leafy footpath points the way to Founders Hall where Thomas stays. Trees mark his office, light and grim; they shade him when the day’s too bright, they spread a shadow when he’s thin, a camaraderie of night. On salty days when hours flicker and cool lawns look more inviting, an exit through the window’s quicker, so easy feathers go alighting. This man with ample manner flees any dull complicity. Religious to the fleshy core! A thriving roll into the air, a restive, winging solitaire. His mind forever waging war in search of spiritual repair.

There’s not much of a contest in spotting Dr. Thomas Tredway ’57 heading out for a run from the Carver Center. The fellow on the left might throw you, since “Swanie” (retired chaplain Richard Swanson ’54) usually has a beard. To make a game of it, send your guess of the year this appeared in the Augustana Bulletin to [email protected].
