Dear United Way Supporters,

This has been an impactful year in the work of United Way of Allen County. Just over two years ago, the Board of Directors, made up of community volunteers, moved forward with tasking United Way with refocusing their work to eliminate community barriers for families that are working hard but struggling to survive. As the staff has worked to align the programming, funding, advocacy efforts, and all community impact efforts, the 2018 ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) report was released by United Ways. ALICE individuals and families are defined as those who are working, but whose income ranges between 127-185% of the Federal Poverty Level. The study showed a decrease of the ALICE population in Allen County by 5.7% over the 2014 report. Combined, ALICE (22%) and poverty (14%) households account for 36% of the total Allen County households. The results prove that change is possible. Speaking on behalf of the Board, we are affirmed that United Way’s ALICE efforts to bring people and organizations together in our community around innovative solutions are still the best focus for our community.

Dan Starr Chairman of the Board United Way of Allen County

UNITED WAY OF ALLEN COUNTY | 3 FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO Dear United Way Champions,

I am grateful and humbled by your continued support of United Way of Allen County. This past year United Way took some significant risks in how we conduct business with champion support. We launched a rebranding campaign, introducing the community to the new United Way, and focusing the message on the overall footprint of our community impact efforts. Our investment process was revised to ensure that our work on eliminating barriers for families that are working hard but struggling to survive receives priority funding. Our Day of Caring volunteer event once again broke records by the number of participants volunteering to make Allen County a better place to work and live. In the coming year, our investment teams made up of volunteers will choose funding for our ongoing program efforts, we will participate in advocacy efforts to raise awareness on predatory lending at the state and national level, and we will continue to work with local businesses to raise funds through workplace campaigns and corporate partnerships. While we have reason to celebrate, there is more work to be done in our communities. Change is possible with your continued partnership in resourcing life-changing solutions for individuals and families that live in Allen County.

David M. Nicole President and CEO United Way of Allen County UNITED WAY OF ALLEN COUNTY | 4 CHANGE IS POSSIBLE.

The individuals who serve on the United Way of Allen County board and committees are members of our community. They believe in fighting for stronger and healthier neighborhoods. They offer expert advice believing that when we work United, we win. Thank you for your service. We are proud to call you friends, supporters, advocates, volunteers, and champions.
