Here one day - gone the next

Disaster hit Jerrabomberra Rotary last Tuesday (5 May) when the new gazebo that had been so proudly displayed at the International Music Festival was literally blown away. As reported in last week’s Jerraganda the new gazebo was making its first appearance. Set up on Saturday 2 May the gazebo was attached to the Music Festival’s Marquee and providing the base for Jerra Rotary’s provision of catering Welcome to Issue Number 42 to the Music Festival patrons. Unfortunately after only three days of operation the high winds on Tuesday of the Jerraganda. morning lifted the gazebo and tore it away from the main Marquee. One observer commented ‘it was Time is flying by towards the like a kite’. Once airborne the gazebo then blew into the adjacent car park and received significant end of the Rotary year. Meeting 841 – 7 May 2015

President Paul got the show on the road, inviting Colin to read the Charge to Australia and Sue R to follow up with a toast to Rotary International.

President’s Report President Paul got straight down to business with his report. Pres Paul noted Secretary Glenn was back from Gallipoli although not able to attend the meeting due to illness. The Pres also noted the great effort by Anton and his family in getting everything organised and set up for the Music Festival catering. President Paul then reported on the demise of the new gazebo (see headline page 1) and thanked Anton and PP Paul for the assistance in clearing up after the damage. President Paul also reported that the Global Scholar we were preparing to sponsor has withdrawn his application for the time being. The reasons being very exciting, he has been offered a 12 month Fellowship with the US Congress and has therefore deferred his studies in favour of this great opportunity. In noting the discussions at last week’s forum, President Paul advised that following further discussions with PE Mez, it would be important for the club to leverage the visioning opportunity that Mez has been exploring, and PP Paul, wearing his District Hat as Visioning Chair, would talk about this this evening. In closing his report Pres Paul was also very happy to report that his wife Sandra had been given a 100% clean bill of health after recent medical treatments in Sydney. All members expressed their happiness for this news.

Executive Reports Secretary Glenn was absent with no report. Treasurer Jon was however present and came bearing gifts in the way of club accounts and invoices. Jon also reported that he has successfully converted the club accounts into the new MYOB software and is confident a full financial report will be available for the next Board meeting.

Directors Reports International and Youth Directors were away this week so no reports from them and Club Service Director Mez also had nothing new to report.

Community Service Jan however was determined to take the floor and thank all the members who helped with the MS Swim for a great effort (see article last issue). Jan reported that the event had raised over $87,000. (At the time of the Jerraganda publication funds raised had reached $90,000).

Jan also reiterated the President’s thanks to Anton and his family for their great work helping set up the Music Festival catering, and also thanked those members who worked on the catering on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

General Business  The Mushroom Weekend – Glenda reminded all members attending the Mushroom weekend of the arrangements and timings.  Passing of past member Mary’s mum – Glenda let members know that past member Mary’s mum had passed away and all members requested Glenda to pass on their condolences.  District Raffle tickets – Pam advised that there are still a few members who have not returned their raffle tickets and she was going to personally hunt them down.  Visioning – Mez requested members to please reply to her email regarding availability for a visioning session in August.  New Committees – Mez also requested members to reply to her email regarding preferences for club committees, so that she could finalise her planning for next year.  Annual Fair – Mez advsied that as there was still no-one willing to lead the Fair Organising Committee, there would likely not be a fair. Thursday 14 May will be the deadline for a decision.  Lizzy – Mez advised that Lizzy will be having further radiology treatment in the week commencing 11 May. She hopes to be at rotary meetings but may not be her usual happy self. (Jokes about her glowing personality should be restrained).  Bowel Care – Lizzy sought volunteers to help visit the various chemists to collect the Bowel Care monies due at the end of the month.  Food available – PP Paul advised that there had been a quantity of bacon and steaks left over from our catering arrangements at the MS Swim and these had been frozen in small packets for distribution to members on a cost recovery basis. Cathy has the steaks and PP Paul has the bacon.

Visioning Pesentation PP Paul put on his District hat as District Chair for Club Visioning and provided members with a presentation on what Club Visioning is and the potential benefits to clubs who leverage this free District service. “It may not be for all clubs, but it is a tried and tested facilitation process that enabales clubs to gain a consensus on what their future should look like and how they might get there”. PP Paul’s presentation briefly covered the history of the Rotary Vision Facilitation Process and how clubs can leverage the District Visioning team to help them define a shared commitment, provide long-term direction, create a framework to establish both long and short term goals and objectives, and optimize use of resources. Basically it gets everyone rowing in the same direction towards a commonly agreed destination. Paul explained that if the club were to decide to have a visioning session it would require setting aside a four hour time slot, usually at the weekend, and inviting the District Facilitation team to run the session with as many members of the club as possible in attendance. As Paul Harris once said “Rotary is not an organization for retrospection. It is rather one whose worth and purpose lie in future activity rather than past performance.” The District Visioning Process help clubs define their future activity.

Joker – Finally there was a joker draw and the lucky ticket went to PP Paul, who took care to draw out the King of Hearts and ensure the Joker survived to grow in value. The Treasurer was asked the all-important question, but was unable to state with any accuracy what the current value of the Joker pool is. Some people reckon at least half a pair of shoes.

Fines – Lizzy conducted a short fines session.

Attendance – Now we all know that reporting attendance figures has become an ‘art’ as opposed to a ‘science’. And this week was no surprise when Lizzy announced attendance was 146.8%.

This week’s market report is provided by Cathy

Short market report -- seemed to be lots of people. Some stall holders sold out early. Cold and windy on parking duty. A few reading glasses handed in. One pair collected by a lady who then bought a bag but then she left the bag behind. She came back to thank us again for retrieving her glasses then seemed confused when she was told she had left her bag behind.

Someone complained about the barracking from the coffee stall. He said they had put up with it longer enough and something should be done.

Tamara finishes as market manager the end of May. Her replacement will be announced Monday evening.

Where are Hannah and Will

Jerraganda editorial staff managed to generate some photos of Hannah this week. The winter has well and truly arrived with temperatures hovering around the 13 degree centigrade maximum and the wind chill factor making it feel about 6 degrees. However despite the weather, Hannah took a trip up to the Botanical Gardens and the Arboretum last weekend. The following photos tell a little of the story.

The cold weather required lots of food, especially large hamburgers Hannah feeling a little brown at the top of the Arboretum

The lizards are big here

Enjoying the Bonsai exhibition

The only way to stop The eagles are big too !!

We also managed to dig up a couple of recent photos of Will over in America where he appears to have invented a new method of transportation (see photo left) and is into cloning a few friends to keep himself company (see photo right).

OUR HISTORY

In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter President). Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26 members. Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Store—the venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm). (Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for the Club banner. There were some good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name ‘Jerraganda’ and David Stevens was the successful designer of our club banner. The design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate adjacent to the Community Centre. Both the Jerraganda and the Club logo have evolved to keep pace with modern times. We have always been, and continue to be, a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and internationally. Our motto is, “Doing Good and Having Fun”
