Analysis of Talk Shows Between Obama and Trump Administrations by Jack Norcross — 69 An Analysis of the Political Affiliations and Professions of Sunday Talk Show Guests Between the Obama and Trump Administrations Jack Norcross Journalism Elon University Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements in an undergraduate senior capstone course in communications Abstract The Sunday morning talk shows have long been a platform for high-quality journalism and analysis of the week’s top political headlines. This research will compare guests between the first two years of Barack Obama’s presidency and the first two years of Donald Trump’s presidency. A quantitative content analysis of television transcripts was used to identify changes in both the political affiliations and profession of the guests who appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” CBS’s “Face the Nation,” ABC’s “This Week” and “Fox News Sunday” between the two administrations. Findings indicated that the dominant political viewpoint of guests differed by show during the Obama administration, while all shows hosted more Republicans than Democrats during the Trump administration. Furthermore, U.S. Senators and TV/Radio journalists were cumulatively the most frequent guests on the programs. I. Introduction Sunday morning political talk shows have been around since 1947, when NBC’s “Meet the Press” brought on politicians and newsmakers to be questioned by members of the press. The show’s format would evolve over the next 70 years, and give rise to fellow Sunday morning competitors including ABC’s “This Week,” CBS’s “Face the Nation” and “Fox News Sunday.” Since the mid-twentieth century, the overall media landscape significantly changed with the rise of cable news, social media and the consumption of online content.

ABC This Week with George Stephanopoulos April 13, 2008 Former President Jimmy Carter spoke with ABC's George Stephanopoulos from Katmandu. Carter is in Nepal to observe the historic elections, and the former president will soon visit the Middle East. GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS, ABC NEWS: Good morning. We begin today with our exclusive headliner from Katmandu, former President Jimmy Carter. President Carter, welcome. I want to get to your mission to the Middle East, but first, you are in Nepal to monitor the elections that were held this week. And you've called these elections the most transformational and profound you've ever monitored. Why? JIMMY CARTER, FORMER U.S. PRESIDENT: Well, this is the 70th election in which the Carter Center has been employed as monitors. And this one will totally transform the structure of a society and the political situation and military situation in Nepal. It will be the end, for instance, of 12 years of conflict, both military and political -- a war that lasted for 10 years and cost about 13,000 lives -- and this will bring peace. Secondly, it would transform completely the nature of the government. For 240 years, Nepal has had a Hindu kingdom -- the only one on earth. And now, it will have a democratic republic. And the third thing I think is significant is that, for the first time, large numbers of marginalized people -- more than 50 percent of their total population -- will be guaranteed a place in the political process. The Madhesis, who live down on the Indian border, Dalits, who are Untouchables, ethnic groups -- and particularly women.

News Articles, CME, Advocacy, Social Media AAP National Conference: Pediatricians urged to use media to make a difference by Corey Nason Reese, Correspondent By their very natures, pediatricians are influencers. When they feel passionately about an issue, they should consider using the media to connect with people and try to make a difference. This encouragement came from Richard Besser, M.D., FAAP, ABC News' chief health and medical editor, in his keynote address at the opening plenary session of the AAP National Conference & Exhibition Saturday. "What I want to do is make a case for why I think that media matters as a way of trying to make connections," Dr. Besser said. "With our words, we (pediatricians) explain, we comfort, we reassure, we educate, we shape behavior and we inspire. That's exactly what I try and do when I'm on the air." In his keynote address Saturday, Dr. Besser said he is a big fan of using social media to reach the younger generation. Dr. Besser, a pediatrician and infectious diseases specialist, provides medical analysis and reports for all ABC News programs and platforms, including "World News Tonight," "Good Morning America" "20/20," "Nightline," ABC News Radio and "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." "When I look at that camera, every time, I am imagining that I am seeing either one of my patients or one of their parents, and that's the tone I use when I am on the air," he explained. "Each of us is here because we care passionately about the lives of children and are trying to make an impact in children's lives in different ways." Dr.

By his prodigious output of research papers, his contribution to teaching and education through textbooks and monographs, his rapport with and motivation of students, and his ad vancement of knowledge through a willingness to tackle new, ill-defined problems, George has distin guished himself as one of the best professors teaching today. His insight and keen intellect have made great strides in our understanding of his chosen fields of process synthesis, control systems engineering, and knowledge-based computer applications to these and other problems. Most surprising, George is only thir teen years out of the student life himself and is only forty years old. To understand his contributions, it is appropriate to examine the beginnings of George's al ready important career in chemical engineering.
