The XV Pacific Games Open Water Open Water competition was held at LOLOATA th ISLAND RFESORT on 12 July, 2015.

16 Men from 9 Federations (Guam GUM, New Caledonia NCA, Marshall Islands MHL, Northern Marianna Islands NMI, Palau PLW, Papua New Guinea PNG, Samoa SAM, Tahiti TAH, and Tonga TGA) and 13 Women from 7 Federations (American Samoa ASA, Fiji Islands FIJ, New Caledonia NCA, Northern Marianna Islands NMI, Palau PLW, Papua New Guinea PNG, Tahiti TAH) competed for a medal placing.

Due to delays in setting the course and with the falling tide affecting water depth, a meeting was held with all teams to shorten the 5km race to 3km and to start in the water.

Water depth was checked during the race to ensure it remained of sufficient depth on the course, and was probably at or close to minimum by the end of the event.

The Men’s & Women’s races generally went well given the conditions & the safety crew kept the swimmers on the line of the course when they deviated too far from the swimming line.

EXPERIENCE COUNTS IN THE POOL RESULTS OF OUR SWIMMERS AS Tegan McCarthy of Papua New Guinea was in action on the REPORTED BY THE REPORTERS ACADEMY first day of competition at the 16th FINA World Swimming AT THE 16th WORLD SWIMMING Championships in Kazan, Russia swimming 100m Butterfly. th CHMAPIONSHIPS, KAZAN, RUSSIA Tegan touched the wall in 4 place in her heat and was delighted with her time of 1:08.82 lowering the national record by two hundredths of a second. As Tegan explained, “I tried to get out there really fast and hold my stroke coming back. It was a long hard race, but it was good to get out there and try and get a PB.”

Ryan Pini was next off the block on the first day of swimming. At an age where most swimmers have hung up their goggles Ryan continues to set the highest of standards both in and out of the pool. Ryan’s first event in Kazan was the 50m Butterfly where his finish time was 24.18 seconds.

Ryan on the 2nd day of competition swam the 100m Backstroke in a finish time of 56.39 seconds.

It was an opportune time to capture a brief word from Ryan in the mixed zone as the Pacific islands’ most experienced swimmer at this championships about what it feels like to be part of the unique group of ten nations from Oceania; “It’s a huge feeling and an honorable feeling. We’re very small and we come together and share our experiences and resources. It’s a massive championship but we’re still very competitive amongst ourselves.”

Epitomizing that competitive nature is Papua New Guinea’s own Barbara Vali-Skelton who took to the pool in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke.

In the pool, Vali-Skelton started strongly and her determination carried through. Her finishing time was 1:16.85. Speaking in the mixed zone afterwards Vali- Skelton was upbeat; “It went really well. It was the best race I’ve done in two years (and) I haven’t got close to that time for a few years so I’m really happy”. When asked about the reason for such a strong performance, she replied; “I just stuck to my race plan. I went out max in the first 50m and just held on, on the way back”.

Ryan Pini, Tegan McCarthy, Sam Seghers and Barbara Vali- Skelton lined up in the Mixed 4 x 100m Medley Relay along with host nation Russia in the same heat to close day 2 of competition.

Ryan Pini got the team off to a great start and put the PNG team in the lead at 100m securing 56.38 as the atmosphere began to build in the Kazan Arena. “With a home crowd and a loud noise, there’s always a little bit of nervousness and excitement. In terms of my time I was a little bit better than my time in the individual event which I aimed for.” Ryan remarked. Tegan followed up with a Breaststroke leg in 1:17.87 seconds while Seghers had an impressive third leg of Butterfly setting the team up for a strong finish. His

PAPUA NEW GUINEA SWIMMING INC

time of 56.07 seconds for his 100m was the fourth fastest for the third 100m out of the entire 26 team event. “It felt pretty good after backing up so soon after the Pacific Games. It was a little bit slower than I’ve been before, but I’m happy.”

Barbara brought the team home in a new national record of 4:13.90 seconds and was equally pleased with her performance and that of the team who finished behind winners Russia, who broke the World Record. Ryan summed up their pleasure, “We smashed our record from the Oceania Championships last year with the same team, which was pleasing.”

Sam Seghers was then again in action in the 100m Freestyle, his biggest competition to date, Seghers adapted seamlessly to the big occasion. “It’s pretty surreal. I’ve never done a comp this big in my life. It’s intimidating at times but it’s a great experience”, he claimed afterwards. The atmosphere is amazing, especially with a Russian swimmer in your heat!” he stated with a smile. His first 50m saw a time of 24.93 registered before a quick second 50m of 26.42. The result was a new personal best of 51.35.

The third day of swimming for the PNG team brought high hopes for Sam Seghers. Having set a personal best only two days prior in the Men’s 100m Freestyle, the young athlete’s focus turned to the shorter, Men’s 50m Freestyle. He clocked a time of 23.46 seconds, beating his Pacific Games time of 23.78 seconds and setting a new personal best at the same time.

When asked about his highlights of the week, Seghers replied; “Getting to meet my idols, and having a chat with Olympic Gold medalists it’s a bit of a surreal feeling. It’s what every kid dreams of”.

Tegan McCarthy’s face was a picture of concentration as she waited for the start. In Heat Two, the Women’s 50 Butterfly. Her start was good. A reaction time of 0.69 seconds was as fast as the quickest swimmer in the heats, Sarah Sjoestroem, the World

Record Holder of Sweden. Her eventual time came in at 30.27 seconds, marginally off her personal best. “It was just off my PB so it wasn’t as I hoped it would be, but it was alright”, she mused. In terms of improvement she identified; “holding my stroke for the 50 (m) and pushing harder”.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA SWIMMING INC

Ryan Pini was next to compete in the 100m Butterfly. He clocked a finish time of 53.02.

Ryan in the Mixed Zone highlighted his area of improvement as fitness. “For me (an improvement) it’ll be fitness. The last two and a half months have been really challenging. I had my appendix removed and a fairly bad back injury and all considering I’ve done really well”. Having finished 30th out of 73, “very well” was a more than fair assessment from the inspirational swimmer.

The fourth day of swimming saw Ryan Pini’s latest individual challenge for Papua New Guinea (PNG) and that was to navigate the Men’s 50m Backstroke. He touched the wall with a time of 26.11 seconds, just inside his time of 26.14 seconds from this year’s Pacific Games in his home nation.

His swim left him a very respectable 35th in the World, and 0.82 seconds off a semi-final spot.

However, there is no plan for Pini to give up just yet, “as a small country we can find our little spot. We’re looking good. We’ve got some strong swimmers and looking at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, there’s a chance to have a really strong, solid team”, said Ryan

The penultimate race of the championships for Barbara Vali- Skelton, was in the Women’s 50m Freestyle clocking 28.78 seconds.

PNG were the team set to bring the curtain down on the championships for the Pacific islands. Event 37 the Mixed 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay.

Once again the team was made up of Ryan Pini, Tegan McCarthy, Barbara Vali-Skelton and Sam Seghers. Ryan got the team off to a strong start completing the first 100m in 50.86 seconds, with PNG in third place. Tegan and Barbara then completed splits of 1:06.06 and 1:04.02 respectively, before handing over to Sam. He completed the final 100m in 50.9 seconds. Sadly, he had broken early on the final change and the team were disqualified, which brought a disappointing end to their hopes of a national record. There was a mix of understandable disappointment and team pride in the Press Area afterwards.

Ryan was first to assess the race and his week, “It was a bit of a disappointing finish, but I guess that’s what happens from time to time. The good part about it was that we were all together for that final swim. It’s been a good week. Over the last three months I’ve come through a lot, surgery, a couple of other injuries, I’ve got an eight week old and a major competition in the Pacific Games in between. For all of us to come here and swim as well as we have, I think is pretty good.” A rueful smile came over Sam’s face as he tried hard to reflect on a successful personal week through the immediate disappointment, “I’m disappointed with breaking and disqualifying the team. I feel bad for letting down the team. …but it’s been an amazing week, an amazing experience”. Tegan could also draw some wider positives, “Again, it was a really good experience coming to the Worlds and even though the relay didn’t go how we wanted it to, I’m happy that we finished the competition as a team.”
