TUESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2014 ! NEW KIDS ON THE WARD The 12th annual National Bank Financial Donald Berman Maimonides Battle of the Bands was a rock’n success generating $375,000 for the Donald Berman Maimonides Centre for Research in Aging. For two nights in December 2014, about 2000 of the ‘who’s who’ of the Montreal community packed Metropolis to hear their friends belt it out to raise funds for a great cause. This year, Don Felder, former lead guitarist of the Eagles joined each band on-stage for a truly memorable performance and Felder and his band performed a knock-out Grand FINALE sending the crowd to their feet. “To be performing onstage with a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is any musician’s dream come true”, says Battle of the Bands co-chair Freddie PRIME-TIME PLAYERS Naimer, whose band Switchback was on the first night of the event. Back by popular demand, we rolled out the red carpet for our sponsors and special guests with a cocktail reception in the Delmar VIP Lounge. Thank you to all the committee members and generous volunteers who donated countless hours of their time for the planning and execution of the event. A special thank you goes to the band members who gave so generously of their time and continue to bring their A-game to the event. Check out our website: www.donaldbermanmaimonides.net to see over 1000 pictures of the event.

Morty was a man who showed a deep commitment to his community, as well as being an active board mem- ber and mentor to the senior management team of the Centre. On September 22nd, 2014, the new Brownstein atri- um was dedicated with Brownstein family members in attendance. Thanks to the generous donation from the Brownstein 1 family, the new atrium area was completely transformed into a comfortable, modern new common space for all to enjoy. The Brownstein family also provided two pictures from their personal collection which are on display in the atrium and coffee shop.

Estate planning includes charitable gifts. Creating a legacy gift allows the charity to acknowledge your support today and benefit tomorrow. Jewish Eldercare recently honoured a significant legacy gift from Harvey Rosenthall by naming the new state-of-the-art education room on the 5th floor in loving memory of his parents Nita and Manny Rosenthall. Pictured are Harvey and Barbara Rosenthall at the official ribbon-cutting ceremony which was followed by a L’Chaim for family and friends. Legacy gifts can include bequests in a will, gifts of life insurance, gifts of RRSP income, and more. To discuss Planned Giving opportunities, please call Foundation Director Karen Flam at (514) 738-4500, ext. 2307. SUITE DREAMS AT JEC After the huge success of the Suite Dreams campaign at Donald Berman Maimonides, we decided to repeat the project at Jewish Eldercare Centre. We have just completed two model rooms, which were sponsored by the Gartner family. With a gift of $7200, you can sponsor a room. Special door plaques inscribed with the donor’s name will leave a last- ing legacy on each renovated room. For more information, please contact Foundation Director Karen Flam at (514) 738-4500, ext. 2307.

STANLEY HITZIG was recognized with the Outstanding Service Award at the annual General Meeting at Donald Berman Maimonides. Hitzig’s good friend Harvey Levenson spoke of his role as President of the Foundation from 1991-1997 and his ongoing commitment to the Centre and its residents. Harvey’s late Uncle Phil Levenson was the one who introduced him to the Maimonides family over 30 years ago in the time of the late Ben Cobrin and Davey Singerman to name a few. Hitzig continues to sit on the Corporation Board as well as being a member of the Medical Ethics Committee. Hitzig says that his philosophy of building a rainy day fund has allowed the Centre to spend over the years to improve the quality of care and services. “I am very proud of everything we have done and look forward to seeing what the future holds,” says Hitzig.

MILAN BRATIN was honoured with the Out- standing Service Award at the Annual General Meeting at Jewish Eldercare Centre on October 29, 2014. Past president Gerry Weinstein presented Bratin with the plaque – using words like “passion” and “dedication” to describe all that Bratin has done for Jewish Eldercare and his community. Bratin was instrumental in merging the foundations of Eldercare and the Hospital of Hope. He was the first president of the Jewish Hospital of Hope Eldercare Foundation. He continues to play key roles on the finance and investment commit- tees, as well as the board. 18 PRIVATE MEET & GREET ANNUAL Guitars signed by Don Felder were a hot commodity at FUNDRAISING the auction of this year’s DBM Battle of the Bands. In fact, purchasing a guitar was the only way to get to go backstage and have a meet and greet with the former Eagles band member. Those who bought the guitar were 1 able to bring their guests for the photo op. Pictured are: 1. Dan Wise 4. Aaron Rand and Val Wiseman 2. Randy Cohen 5. Robert and Mary Frances 7. Robert Cutler 3.
