The program is part of the government's "clean car revolution" - an effort to reduce air pollution near population centers. The electric bus program is one of several programs being funded by a debt agreement with the Jewish National Fund. Through that deal, the JNF transferred NIS 390 million to the MoEP for projects aimed at reducing air pollution, increasing energy efficiency, and improving quality of life in Israel.

Following the publication of Calls for Proposals from bus companies, the following companies will be receiving electric bus subsidies:

Dan Public Transportation: subsidies for the purchase of 21 buses in the area : subsidies for the purchase of 6 buses in the Modiin-Maccabim-Reut area : subsidies for the purchase of 5 buses in the Sharon region : subsidies for the purchase of 5 buses in the area

Egged bus company is already receiving subsidies for the purchase of 25 electric buses that will operate in the Bay area. Altogether, the MoEP-JNF program will be responsible for the purchase of 62 municipal electric buses. Environmental Protection Minister Zeev Elkin: "Almost all Israeli bus fleets use diesel engines, the emissions of which have been classified by the World Health Organization as carcinogenic to humans. The MoEP is encouraging a move to cleaner vehicles, and we are convinced that supporting procurements of buses that use this new technology will encourage other companies to purchase buses utilizing clean technologies, for the sake of public health." JNF Chair Danny Atar: "The JNF is the largest leading green entity in the State. Alongside the promotion of social values throughout Israel, and fostering green space as the State forester, we see great importance in improving the texture and quality of life in Israel, by improving the environment and the air we breathe. Reduction of pollutant emissions from vehicles will allow citizens of Israel to live cleaner, healthier lives and will allow them to breathe easier."
