Related international commitments and the UN role in disaster risk reduction 6 6.2 UN agencies and scope of activities Introduction The United Nations system is a mosaic that reflects the complexity of activities to be conducted in order to fulfil the objectives and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. It is composed of principal organs, specialized agencies and other autonomous organizations carrying out specific mandates. Reducing vulnerability and risk to natural or man-made hazards is addressed by many enti- ties of the United Nations system within the framework of their respective field of activities. By estab- lishing the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) as the successor arrangement to the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR, 1990-2000), the international community recognized the need for a consolidated and coordinated approach to disaster and risk reduction by concerned entities within and outside the United Nations system. The purpose of this section is to give an indication of how the parts of the United Nations system function when it comes to disaster and risk reduction. It is a general overview, which does not include disaster relief or emergency management activities. This brief assessment of the key players within the United Nations system and their action in disaster reduction seeks to demonstrate the potential for increased coherence in this field and facilitate a targeted approach to the system by Governments and other entities. It sets out several strategies, principles, and recommendations, and applies to all who live and work in the city. This vision focusses not on buildings or urban master plans but on the people of the city. It explores ways in which they make and inhabit Winchester, and acts upon their call for greater agency. Throughout this project, in conversations or online, the people of Winchester were clear: if the new vision was to be of any practical use, it had to consider how to effect change in the city. This report outlines the mechanisms recommended to make change happen. That said, the vision has been conceived spatially and presents a strong spatial dimension. For example, it recommends a network of walking routes that connect local neighbourhoods, but which also create a skeleton of pathways and nodes across the city – pathways which connect people to local amenities, to the city and to the landscape; and nodes which becomes special places of interaction, of memory and of people. -

Twenty-five years ago when the last of my four children went off to college, I started painting again. Raised in an artistic family and painting as far back as I can remember, I had all the tools…just hadn’t had the time while raising my children and helping run the family business. And then I discovered pastels. I Pop Rocks got on a plane and flew to Denver for a workshop with Ramon Kelly, came home, and haven’t stopped painting since then. One of my Bucket List goals was to have a painting accepted in the PSA Annual “For Pastels Only” Exhibition. Got to mark that off my list on second try. And now, years later, I am a PSA Master Pastelist. This past November, I received a call from Pastel Society of America’s President, Jimmy Wright, asking if I would consider being part of a three member jury for this year’s 42nd PSA Annual Exhibition “Enduring Brilliance”. The other juror members were Duane Wakeham and Aline Ordman, also Master Pastelists. I was sooo honored. I was told that this would consume at least a week of my life. No problem…I had closed my 47-year-old family business last fall and was ready to be an active part of the pastel world… doing something besides standing at my easel. In preparation for my duties, I was able to go online to the demonstration option for SHOWSUBMIT to familiarize myself with the jurying process. -

Introduction Academic scholarship on the value of benefits we receive from nature traces its origin back for several decades. However, ecosystem services - whose term was coined in the late 1960s - have been mainstreamed with the publication of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in 20051. In the literature, a general shift is emerging in considering the concept from an original ecological and pedagogical perspective to an inclusion of economic, legal and institutional aspects in its relevance for public policy2. The production of ecosystem services from agricultural land was understood through the concept of multifunctional agriculture3. Within this line, the paradigm of social- ecological systems has been recently placed4.
