Biographical / Historical Irving Petlin (1934-2018) was a painter in Paris, France; New York, New York; and Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. Petlin was born in Chicago to Polish Jewish immigrants, attended the Art Institute of Chicago, and earned a MFA from Yale University. Petlin specialized in the medium of pastel, first gaining recognition in Paris after his service in the United States army. From there he went to Los Angeles, where he was principal organizer of the "Artists Protest Movement Against the War in Vietnam," and the 1966 "Peace Tower," with Mark di Suvero and other artists. Petlin and his wife, Sarah, a poet, moved to New York City for 28 years before returning to Paris. Petlin was heavily influenced by the political landscape around him and was an active member of the Art Workers' Coalition. He used allegory, mythology, and symbolism to illustrate politics and the human condition. He often collaborated on projects with other artists and was inspired by writers and poets. In the last decades of his life, Petlin split his time between his studio in Paris and his family's 18th century farmhouse in Martha's Vineyard continuing his work as an artist and activist. The exhibition is curated by John Corbett and Jim Dempsey, independent curators and gallery owners; Jessica Moss, Smart Museum Curator of Contemporary Art; and Richard A. Born, Smart Museum Senior Curator. Monster Roster officially opens with a free public reception, Wednesday, February 10, 7–9pm featuring an in-gallery performance by the Josh Berman Trio. The Monster Roster was a fiercely independent group of mid-century artists, spearheaded by Leon Golub (1922–2004), which created deeply psychological works drawing on classical mythology, ancient art, and a shared persistence in depicting the figure during a period in which abstraction held sway in international art circles. “The Monster Roster represents the first group of artists in Chicago to assert its own style and approach—one not derived from anywhwere else—and is one of the most important Midwestern contributions to the development of American art,” said co-curator John Corbett.

    EXHIBITION CONTINUES THRU MAY 26, 2006 Kent Gallery is pleased to present Irving Petlin’s most recent works on linen and on paper in collaboration with Galerie Jan Krugier, Ditesheim & Cie, Geneva. With a long tradition of political activism, Petlin’s works of the past decade have dealt with a view of global politics of the United States with regard to the growing conflicts in Infantry (for Leon Golub) 2004-2005 the Middle East. For over fifty years, Irving Petlin has established himself as a master of paint and pastel, evoking powerful images in the tradition of Odilon Redon, James Ensor and Francis Bacon. Petlin has continuously cultivated the power of art to reconcile ancient wisdoms, European literature of the 20th Century, with current political engagements. Irving Petlin received scholarships to the Art Institute of Chicago, postgraduate work at Yale University and a subsequent Ryerson Fellowship that allowed him to establish residency in Paris from 1959 to 1963. In response to the United States involvement in Vietnam, Petlin moved to the West Coast in 1964, and organized the Artists’ Protest Movement while a visiting artist at UCLA. In collaboration with Mark DiSuvero in 1965, they created the Peace Tower located at Sunset and La Cienega generating enormous public attention. The Peace Tower has been reconstructed for the 2006 Whitney Biennial. Since 1966, Petlin has divided his time between studios in New York, Paris, and summers in Martha’s Vineyard. With an exhibition history that begins as early as 1956, Petlin has shown with galleries in Chicago, San Francisco, Galerie du Dragon in Paris, Palais de Beaux Arts in Brussels, Turin, London, with Odyssia Gallery in New York, Marlborough Gallery in London and New York, Kent Gallery in New York, and presently with Galerie Jan Krugier, Ditesheim & Cie of Geneva.

She completed a major in Political Science and two minors, in French and Criminal Justice. She also worked as a Writing Center mentor for three years, learning about both the writing process and people, always benefiting from her perspective as a non-native speaker of English. With her degree completed, she has now returned to Germany and a series of internships in the area of political education, before starting a graduate program in political science in 2007, with the intent to one day be able to teach college courses. Stockholder is Professor and Chair of the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago and is perhaps best known in the city for Color Jam (2012), which took over a busy intersection in the Loop.
