MISSION STATEMENT: St. Michael Catholic Community strives to be a welcoming parish where people come together to worship, learn and grow in faith. Through our actions, we demonstrate our beliefs in fellowship, service and generous tithing of time, talent and treasure while empowering people to take a more active role in the mission of the church. We care for one another and receive comfort and support in our own times of need. All are encouraged to participate in the journey to live by Christ’s example and build the kingdom of God by sharing His word with those we meet.

From Fr. Mike...

Matt Kelly’s new book I Heard God sudden death, a job loss, a divorce, a Laugh starts out with an amusing change of mind that may reveal that our exercise. Kelly looked through his high initial dream career, our dream spouse, school yearbook reading the comments our dream lifestyle was not at all as made about him by his classmates. It fulfilling as we once thought (the kind of seems he didn’t turn out at all like his experience that occurs in mid-life classmates imagined he would. In turn, crises). These experiences, both the his classmates didn’t meet his good and the bad, can be extremely expectations either. Life, he concludes, stressful. is filled with surprises, unexpected Stress in the latter cases are twists and turns. Regardless of how understandable. Who wouldn’t get a carefully we plan something, there are case of the blues because of an illness a million choices we make that can or sudden death? The former is more impact our future. Sometimes those difficult to imagine, but I argue that choices are made without our ever stress happens with any change, even realizing that it would impact our future change for the better. When the singer or how significant an impact it will stepped out on have. of “Britain’s Got Talent” in 2009, she Life as we imagine is rarely life as we was shy and socially awkward. The live it. Sometimes we are delighted by audience was embarrassed for her as reverses of fortune, being in the right she tried to answer the questions the place at the right time, getting a sudden panel of judges asked. There was no break or getting hired for a position that way she was prepared for the life far exceeded our wildest dreams, or changing event that was about to making a series of wise investments happen to her. The audience, in turn, that brings us more money than we was not prepared for what they we ever thought we might have. For going to experience when she started others, the opposite to sing. It was an event. (If you have happens. Something goes wrong, not yet done so, checked out her 2009 badly wrong…a surprise illness, a (Connued on page 2) performance on Google. It brings a tear to my eyes every time I see it.) Her singing made her a different person. The song she selected was “” from the musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel “Les Miserables.” She became the character Fantine when Fr. Mike she sang. She was beaten down by life and her song of Connued from sorrow transformed her life into something page 1 beautiful. Boyle lived with a form of autism, was bullied in school throughout her life, lost both parents and a sister, and was 47 years old when she announced to the world that she wanted to be a professional singer like Elaine Paige but was never given a chance. Within ten measures of her song, she brought down the house with her amazing voice. The seven minutes and eight seconds on national television transformed her life. She was famous; she was sought after; she became wealthy, but all of that change took a huge toll on her. She had several hospitalizations because of her emotional breakdowns. If John Lennon is correct about life, that it “happens while you are busy making other plans,” then success in life isn’t found in the planning or the execution of those plans, but in the living, in dealing with the sudden jolts and quick turns that shake our foundations and upset our carefully laid out plans. Things like a job change, grief, a devastating loss facing a life-long battle with stage fright and anxiety and still managing to step on stage and sing like no one is listening. That is a triumph of the human spirit that makes my soul soar. It would have the same impact me even if Boyle never made a dime on her voice, never made a record, never did a duet with Elaine Paige or grew in popularity. Whatever life brings us and what we make of it is part of life’s mysteries. Plans, though wholesome and good, are for beginners. With a little more experience, we just wait and see what turns up.

2 The Gospel story we heard at today’s liturgy—the Feeding of the Five Thousand—is just one of the few miracle stories we hear in all four Gospels. In fact, it is in the Gospel of Mahew twice; through a thorough reading of the Scriptures, we would encounter this narrave five mes. While each story is very similar, each evangelist puts their own spin on it so to address the needs of the audience for which he is wring. Mahew’s version deserves a lile more of our aenon.

Mahew begins, Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a lonely place apart. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. Just prior to this event, John the Bapst was arrested, imprisoned, and subsequently killed by beheading at the request of Herodias (daughter of Herod). We can only imagine how Jesus felt; his friend, confidant, and cousin was just murdered. Surely, Jesus and John were close to each other so this hurt Jesus to the core. Upon hearing this, Jesus did as many of us would do at hearing tragic news, he withdrew to a quiet place to be by himself. Unfortunately, Jesus did not have much me alone; the crowds followed him. He did not have much me to focus on his loss and chose to deal with compassion on those who followed him— he healed all who were sick.

In the evening of that same day, the disciples approached Jesus and said: This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves. Jesus’ response is a wonderful teaching moment for the disciples: They need not go away; you give them something to eat. Jesus is beginning to train the disciples to have confidence in their ability to work with the people, to show some iniave, and to be the leaders he has called them to be. Unfortunately, they just don’t get it. They bring Jesus the meager food they have—five loaves of bread and two fish. Now, pay aenon to this… Taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were sasfied. Jesus did what any proper Jewish person would do before a meal, he prayed. His prayer probably went something like this: Baruch ata Adonai Eloheinu melech ha’olam hamotzi lechem min ha’aretz. (Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who brings forth bread from the earth.) More importantly, this parcular ritual points toward the Passover meal Jesus had with the disciples (the Last Supper). If you remember, Jesus took the bread, said the blessing, broke it and gave it to the disciples. This is the instuon of the Eucharist.

A er all had their fill, the disciples collected the “le -overs”—there were twelve baskets. Interesngly, the baskets represent the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles. This narrave, as well, represents the feeding of the Jewish people. Mahew’s other story of feeding the multudes, in chapter 15, is o en said to represent the feeding of the Genles. Nevertheless, Jesus fed a lot of people; Those who ate were about five thousand men, not including women and children. Think of the sheer magnitude of people. Mahew’s addion of the women and children is important. The total figure could well have come to twenty or thirty thousand. How could Jesus have possibly done this? How could he have provided enough food for all those people? There are two possible explanaons.

Truly, there could be two miracles in this story. The first…Jesus was able to feed the people through the power of God. Plain and simple. This miracle defies any natural or scienfic explanaon and is considered to come from God. The other miracle has been met with some controversy. To put it simply, maybe the crowds shared the food they brought with them. To be logical, how many people go on a long journey without taking at least some provisions with them? Perhaps when the crowds saw Jesus share the food he had, they were moved to share what they had brought (and hidden out of greed) with them. In any event, the feeding of all those people was miraculous. So, what can we take from this narrave?

Our “cupboards” are full. Every one of us has “food” to offer others. Our world is hungry for healing, compassion, peace, and forgiveness. Someme this week, sit down and make a list of all your talents and all you have to offer those around you (you may have to ask others to assist you). Pray for the guidance of Jesus and all the saints that you will be able to be “food” for others by sharing the goodness that is within you.

For your information, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is on Saturday, the 15th of August and is not a Holy Day of Obligation this year. We are not going to have a special Mass for the solemnity, but will take the opportunity at the 4:30pm Mass on that and courage. Paul would have known this better Saturday to concentrate on songs that highlight than any of us. He himself experienced most, if Mary. We can’t make the 4:30pm Mass be just not all, of these hardships, including for the Assumption as the AOD had mandated imprisonment and ultimately execution for his that Saturday afternoon Mass is actually a vigil faith and never wavered; but always remained Mass for the Sunday and can’t be used as a convinced in Christ’s love for him. special Mass for any other feast or solemnity. It seems to apply with our present remember a summer this hot in recent years, can situation. It says that those who are in Christ, or you? It seems like are doing enough. Paul wants his readers in this it’s levelled off a bit and the deaths have really passage to understand that even though suffering gone down. He loves us so much something always gets lost in the shuffle when that he sacrificed His own son to make eternal things are on a fast track. life possible for us. Nice to see baseball back. It’s a funny feeling Paul goes on to say we should never interpret with no one in the stands but the players seem to the darkness, challenges, failures, or heartaches of have adapted nicely. Guess basketball, hockey earthly life as evidence of God’s lack of love for and football are on the schedule as well but that us. I love the opening lines of this letter that all remains tentative as does the baseball season nothing we can do can keep Christ from loving as some teams are experiencing several of their us, and nothing that happens to us can mean players having the virus. Hope returning to Christ no longer loves us. Paul gives us a pretty sports was a good decision and does not end up long list of things that can happen in life being something we all regret. including trials, hardships, persecutions for our faith in Christ, hunger, lack of clothing or shelter, physical threats, or death by violence. None of this can separate us from the love of Christ. None of the things we experience in life means God Bless, Christ doesn’t love us, just the opposite is true. Deacon Franz He loves us enough to bring us through these things. Right now, looking at all that we are going through, that brings me a lot of confidence

Join our St. Michael “Running for our Kids” Virtual Team at: https://www.familiesagainstnarcotics.org/rundrugsoutoftown

Are virtual races a bit different? Definitely. But they are extremely popular throughout the country and we expect to have an excellent turnout. We are also planning to have some online events in conjunction with this event, including a virtual memory tent. And we encourage you to plan team activities as well (in accordance to whatever recommended social distancing guidelines are in place at the time, of course). We know that not being able to hold this amazing event as we have in the past will be a big disappointment for a lot of you. It’s disappointing for us, too. But we have chosen to do what we think is best—and safest—for everyone. Help us turn a negative situation into a positive result. Run or walk with us. Virtually. We need your support this year more than ever.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected].
