Sixth Sunday in Time — February 11, 2018 Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. — 1 Corinthians 10:31

In today’s , a man with leprosy approaches Jesus and

begs to be healed. Jesus sees the man’s desire to not only be healed but also to be reunited with his community, because lepers were considered unclean and were excluded from the city. In healing him, Jesus restores him to the community and also questions this practice of exclusion. St. Paul encourages us to be imitators of Christ in the second reading. We carefully watch and see who is being excluded from our own society and then we need to help them regain their place in our community. How are we imitating Christ and making our communities better places for all?

St. Paul exhorts us to “Be imitators of Christ.” He provides us with a courageous example of imitang Christ and has le us with many leers to encourage us in the process. This Painng of St. Paul is located In the Our Lady of Bethlehem Chapel in the Basilica.

BLESS YOU! BLESS YOU! Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Because of the current flu epidemic, we will temporarily cease to offer our neighbor a greeting at the beginning of mass and at the Sign of Peace. We will also temporarily cease to offer the at Communion time. As you are probably aware, the State of California has been badly affected by the flu virus, and the above mentioned measures have been taken to safeguard the health of our parishioners and visitors. Please continue to pray for all our sick brothers and sisters. I wish you blessings of good health and great happiness, Fr. Paul, Pastor at Carmel Mission

The Bowl and Aspergillum The Carmel Mission Basilica Museum is fortunate to have several liturgical artifacts that links us uniquely to extraordinary moments in California Church History. When his Holiness's Saint Pope John Paul II visited our Mission and celebrated the at Laguna Seca in 1987, many of the vessels and furnishings used for the mass were from our historic collection. The pictured asperges bowl (filled with ) & aspergillum were used by Saint Paul John Paul II to bless the estimated 72,000 people that gathered for the sacrament. The asperges bowel has the additional significance of potentially being the oldest “Hallmarked” Spanish artifact of the colonial world with a dating mark of 1579. Crafted in the mannerist style, it was among the earliest liturgical furnishing brought to the Carmel Mission in 1769 by Saint Junípero Serra from the Loreto Mission in Baja California. The object is beautiful engraved with liturgical scenes including the Annunciation and an image of Christ.

The asperges bowl and aspergillum are located in Carmel Mission’s Mora Chapel.

Carmel Mission’s Junípero Serra School

Pictured, are 12 of the 50 orphaned or disabled children in Liberia, Africa, that are now able to go to school because of the Junípero Serra School students, teachers, parents, and parishioners who have supported this important outreach. Along with raising funds to provide an education for these children, Junípero Serra School students learned how to make clean drinking water. In the learning process, the students learned about the challenges and available solutions to breaking the cycle of poverty in Liberia. Students learned that access to clean water is one of the first steps to transform lives as people become free from water borne diseases. Call JSS at 831-624-8322 to learn how you can help.
