Three Waves of Awkwardness: a Meta-Analysis of Sex in Game
ThreeWavesofAwkwardnessǣ Meta-analysisofSexinGameStudies J. Tuomas Harviainen Hanken School of Economics Ashley Brown Brunel University Jaakko Suominen University of Turku FINAL PRE-PUBLICATION DRAFT Keywords: game studies, sexuality, theory, methodology, critical meta-analysis ABSTRACT This article critically evaluates and questions the growth and maturity of game studies as a scholarly set of related approaches to the study of games, by providing an account of studies of sexuality in (mostly digital) games from 1978 to present. The main goal of this article is to highlight overarching themes and patterns in the literature, with a focus on theories and methodologies commonly used, and the way game studies is still risk-aware, even awkward in its discussions of sexuality. In addition to a review of 37 years of literature, the article employs a chronological and thematic metaphor analysis of past research texts to analyse whether game studies is growing up or in perpetual puberty, and whether it really is exploring sexual maturity alongside the games we study. It finds that while different periods of time can be identified in research as far as approaches to sexuality in games go, game studies is still to a large extent engaged in the management of the stigma that discussing sexuality may cause. Rather than a maturation process, the waves are shown to be manifestations of different types of environmentally influenced risk awareness, consecutive risk avoidance, and a resulting awkwardness. INTRODUCTION Games are not made, played or discussed in cultural vacuums, just as those who make and play them do not exist in a space removed from cultural influence. -

Contact: [email protected] 1 When Are You Going to Catch Up with Me? Shu Lea Cheang with Alexandra Juhasz Abstract: “Digital nomad” Shu Lea Cheang and friend and critic Alexandra Juhasz consider the reasons for and implications of the censorship of Cheang’s 2017 film FLUIDØ, particularly as it connects to their shared concerns in AIDS activism, feminism, pornography, and queer media. They consider changing norms, politics, and film practices in relation to technology and the body. They debate how we might know, and what we might need, from feminist-queer pornography given feminist-queer engagements with our bodies and ever more common cyborgian existences. Their informal chat opens a window onto the interconnections and adaptations that live between friends, sex, technology, illness, feminism, and representation. Keywords: cyberpunk, digital media, feminist porn, Shu Lea Cheang, queer and AIDS media Shu Lea Cheang is a self-described “digital nomad.” Her multimedia practice engages the many people, ideas, politics, and forms that are raised and enlivened by her peripatetic, digital, fluid existence. Participatory Porn Culture Feminist Positions and Oppositions in the Internet Pornosphere Allegra W
from Paul G. Nixon and Isabel K. Düsterhöft (Eds.) Sex in the Digital Age. New York: Rougledge, 2018. CHAPTER 2 Participatory porn culture Feminist positions and oppositions in the internet pornosphere Allegra W. Smith Introductions: pornography, feminisms, and ongoing debate Though first-wave feminists had engaged in debate and advocacy surrounding sexual knowledge and obscenity since the late-19th century (Horowitz, 2003), American advocates did not begin to address pornography as a feminist concern until the 1970s, ostensibly beginning with the formation of the activist group Women Against Violence in Pornography and Media (WAVPM) in 1978. WAVPM was a reactionary response to the mainstreaming of hardcore pornography in the wake of American sexual liberation, which many second wave feminists claimed “…encouraged rape and other acts of violence, threatening women’s safety and establishing a climate of terror that silenced women and perpetuated their oppression… [thus helping] create and maintain women’s subordinate status” (Bronstein, 2011, pp. 178–179). The resulting “porn wars” (or, more broadly, “sex wars”) of the 1980s and 1990s polarized second- and third-wave feminists into two camps: (1) anti-porn feminists, such as writer Andrea Dworkin (1981) and legal scholar Catharine MacKinnon (1984), who opposed the creation and distribution of pornographic images and videos on moral and political grounds; and (2) pro-porn or sex-positive feminists, such as anthropologist Gayle Rubin and feminist pornographer Candida Royalle, who advocated for freedom of sexual expression and representation. The rhetoric surrounding the social and cultural ills perpetuated by pornography was duly acrimonious, with one prominent feminist writing, “pornography is the theory, rape is the practice” (Morgan, 1978, p. -

Feminism, Pornography and Ethical Heterosex Katherine Albury Phd, School of Media, Film and Theatre 2006
Impure Relations: Feminism, Pornography and Ethical Heterosex Katherine Albury PhD, School of Media, Film and Theatre 2006 ABSTRACT This thesis engages with feminist and queer theory to assert that heterosexuality can be understood not as a fixed, unchanging and oppressive institution, but as changing combination of erotic and social affects which coexist within public and private bodies, discourses and imaginations. Drawing on the work on Michel Foucault, William Connolly, Eve Sedgwick and others, it examines the multiple discourses of heterosexuality that are already circulating in popular culture, specifically, representations of sex and gender within sexually explicit media. It examines the fields of polyamory, ‘feminist porn’, amateur and DIY pornography and ‘taboo’ sexual practices to demonstrate the possibilities offered by non-normative readings of heterosex. These readings open up space not only for queerer, less oppressive heterosexualities, but also for models of ethical sexual learning which incorporate heterosexual eroticism and emphasise both the pleasures and dangers of heterosex.
