    A News Journal for Churches of Christ on the West Coast Volume III Summer 1985 Number 2 Pepperdine Bible Lectureship Draws 4,000 A crowd numbering more than 4,000 was present for the opening night of the 42nd Annual Pepperdine Bible Lec- tureship on April 16. Lectureship guests came from 35 states and five foreign countries for the four-day event. California was the most widely represented state, with participants from approximately 300 congregations of the Church of Christ in attendance. Dr. David Davenport, Pepperdine's new president, was the featured speaker on opening night. His keynote address on The Finality of Christ,' launched the lec- tureship theme of 'Jesus Christ is the Same Yesterday and Today and Forever.' Davenport, 34, was speaking on his first day in office. The evening was highlighted by a 15-minute ceremony called "The Spiritual Inauguration of Pepperdine's Sixth President." Pacific Church News Sacramento Regional Church Growth Seminar On September 26-28,1985, the sec- ond California Regional Church Growth Seminar will take place in Sacramento. The location will be the Winding Way Church of Christ at 6201 Winding Way in the Sacramento suburb of Carmichael. The Regional Seminar is sponsored by the Center for Church Growth of Houston, Texas, along with churches in the Sacramento area. Dr. Joe Schubert, president of the Center, and Tim Mathe- ny, executive director of the Center, will make feature presentations at the Semi- nar.     News from the Crest RALEIGH RUNNELS POOL RENOVATION Pool hours are offered at Malibu High School (schedule on next page). The schedule is updated often on our website: www.pepperdine.edu/crest/ facilities. Please check the website or call the Crest office at (310) 506-4745 to verify hours and/or the Malibu High School pool deck after 4:30 PM at (310) 589-1933 to verify lane availability and hours. FREE FITNESS CLASSES ARE OFFERED TO CREST THROUGH POOL CLOSURE. Full fitness class schedule available at www.pepperdine.edu/campusrecreation. The pool refurbishment is well underway and on schedule to reopen August 1, 2013! Please call the Crest office with questions. STOTSENBERG TRACK/FIELD RENOVATION – BEGINNING APRIL 1, 2013 The Stotsenberg Track is being renovated April 1 – August 1, removing the four inner lanes of the track to provide a larger soccer field that meets NCAA requirements. The track will reopen on August 1, 2013. A great alternative for walking/jogging is the Alumni Park course (pictured left). WEIGHT ROOM The weight room painting project is complete and we encourage you to come down and check out the new improvements! David Baird is Dean Emeritus of Seaver College at Pepperdine University. He is a native of Edmond, Oklahoma, and served as Dean of Seaver College from 1998 to 2008. He obtained his AA degree from George Washington University; his BA degree in History and Geography from the University of Central Oklahoma; and his MA and PhD degrees in History and Geography from the University of Oklahoma. He served on the History faculty at the University of Arkansas (1968–1978) and Oklahoma State University (1978–1988), then coming to Pepperdine as the Howard A. White Professor of History in 1988, and became the Dean of Seaver College in 1998. Dr. Baird has written and edited many books and articles about the history of the American West and Native Americans. Some of his most notable books include a biography of Peter Pitchlynn (University of Oklahoma Press, 1972 and 1986), a history of the Quapaw Indians (University of Oklahoma Press, 1988), and a history of the state of Oklahoma (with Danney Goble, University of Oklahoma Press, 1994 and 2007).

    Pacific Church News A NEWS JOURNAL FOR CHURCHES OF CHRIST ON THE WEST COAST Volume IV Summer 1986 Number 2 Elliott Named President at Columbia Olbricht Will Chair Religion at Pepperdine Pepperdine University has announced the appointment of Dr. Thomas Olbricht as chairperson of the Religion Division of Seaver College. Dr. Olbricht is presently director of graduate studies in religion at Abilene Christian University. From 1981 to 1985 he was the Dean of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts at ACU. He has also served on the faculties of Harding University, the University of Dubuque, and The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Olbricht received his academic training at Northern Illinois University (B.S.), Harvard University (S.T.B.) and The University of Iowa (M.A., Ph.D.). He is the author of four books and numerous articles in scholarly journals. He is editor of the scholarly journal Restoration Quarterly and president of the board of Second Century Journal, Inc. Dr. Olbricht is an elder of the Minter Lane Church of Christ in Abilene, Texas, and has served as a minister in six states. He has served as a consultant to the Herald of Truth and Heartbeat radio programs. He and his wife Doro- thy have five children and two Dr. Gary D.
