A CONCUSSION IS A BRAIN INJURY: GET THE FACTS TO PROTECTYOURATHLETESANDYOU

Brain injuries in athletics are not rare. At least nine documented severe injuries 2 resulting in life-long disability have occurred in the state of Nebraska in athletics in 2 the last 15 years, and thousands of concussions or mild brain injuries happen in athletics each year in our state. Although collision sports including football have the highest incidence, during this last year concussions in Lincoln have included 0 athletes from soccer, basketball, wrestling, volleyball, diving, baseball and softball. Did you know that current International Guidelines state that any child under the age of 19 with a suspected concussion should be evaluated by a licensed health care provider trained in the evaluation and management of 1 concussion before returning to play, and no child under the age of 1 19 should be returned to play while still experiencing the symptoms of a concussion? Last year, the states of Washington and Oregon were the first two states to pass legislation that no athlete can be returned to play following a suspected concussion without 0 evaluation by a licensed health care professional trained in the evaluation and 0 management of concussions. Currently, 17 states have similar legislation pending, and the national house judiciary committee has been listening to testimony regarding the need to implement these guidelines in all 50 states.

This year at the Nebraska Coaches Association Clinic, we invite and C encourage you to attend one of two 8:15 a.m. sessions on concussive injuries in athletics. During this session you will learn to identify the signs and symptoms of c concussion, learn the current guidelines for the management of concussion in athletics, and learn how to help protect your athletes from more serious repetitive injuries. We believe that implementing these guidelines helps protect the long- L term safety of the athlete, while also demonstrating that coaches and districts are l attempting to address this issue in a manner consistent with best practices and what is rapidly becoming law in many states.

Statement from Roger Breed, Commissioner of Education - The Nebraska I Department of Education encourages coaches of all school district sports to attend i the presentation on “A Concussion is a Brain Injury – Get the Facts to Protect Your Athletes and You” at the NCA Multi-Sports Coaches Clinic in Lincoln on July 27 and 28, 2010. The safety of student athletes is a primary concern as is N protecting you and your district from liability issues. I would encourage you to make every effort to attend one of the 8:15 a.m. sessions on concussions in n sports!

10 COACHES NEED TO ATTEND DISTRICT AND SPORTS MEETINGS The activities of the Nebraska Coaches Association are monitored by the Board of Directors, selected during the annual summer clinic. Also selected are the various Sports Advisory Committee members, who are voted on during the sports meetings on Wednesday of clinic week. Each of these elected coaches plays 2 integral roles in the operation of the NCA. The board oversees and administers 2 the NCA operations, meeting quarterly to discuss finances, making decisions on staffing, and the day to day decisions of the NCA office. Each year, a new Vice President is selected at the clinic in each of the six districts. They will serve a two-year term, at which time they can run again. 0 The Sports Advisory Committees are also elected during the clinic to serve 0 a two-year term. This year, Districts II, IV, and VI will have elections to determine these members. The responsibilities of the Advisory Committee members include attending the annual summer clinic, selecting a nominee from each sport for 1 National Coach of the Year, suggesting clinic speakers, recommending clinic ideas 1 and improvements of NCA activities, and suggesting and evaluating proposals for change in the policies and procedures governing each sport. Members also serve the role of selecting All-Star Coaches and players for the annual All-Star series, serving as hosts for their respective sport at the clinic, 0 and other duties deemed necessary by the Executive Director 0 or Board of Directors. The membership of the Nebraska Coaches Association is the lifeblood in the success of the association. It can’t be stressed enough that members must take an active role in the governance and management of the association. Much of this takes place beginning with the summer clinic. You are encouraged to consider becoming more actively involved C in the NCA, first with your participation at the District and Sports Meetings at the c summer clinic. Don’t take off Wednesday morning, attend the scheduled meetings!
