Former Ohio State Running Back Pepe Pearson Opens Up About Playing, Coaching Career Since the NFL draft’s inception in 1936, the Ohio State football program has been a mainstay. The Buckeyes have had a whopping 477 players selected – including a nation-leading 84 first-round picks – across 85 drafts. A quick glimpse at the long list of players would reveal the 1997 Buckeyes as an anomaly, however. After falling to Florida State in the Sugar Bowl, all of Ohio State’s draft-eligible juniors opted to put their NFL dreams on hold for another shot at a national title. Running back Pepe Pearson didn’t have a choice, however, as he was one of the few starters who had exhausted his eligibility that season. Despite receiving a late-round grade from NFL personnel, Pearson went unselected in the 1998 draft. He signed a free-agent deal with the San Francisco 49ers and bounced around the league for three seasons, also spending time on the offseason roster or practice squads of the Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Pearson, who weighed in at 5-10 and 209 pounds during his playing career, also had briefs stints with the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe, the Las Vegas Outlaws of the original XFL and the Dayton Warbirds of the National Indoor Football League. If you ask for the highlight of his career, Pearson will quickly point to the Fire’s 13-10 win over the Scottish Claymores in World Bowl 2000, the eighth installment of NFL Europe’s championship game.

  • DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE One of the Huskers’ Most Well-Known Traditions Is the Blackshirts, Which Has Become the Common Nickname for Nebraska’S Defensive Unit
DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE One of the Huskers’ most well-known traditions is the Blackshirts, which has become the common nickname for Nebraska’s defensive unit. The term originally dates back to the early 1960s and refers to the black jerseys that Nebraska’s first-string defenders wear in practice. With the return of the two-platoon system in college football in 1964, Head Coach Bob Devaney looked for a way to distinguish the defensive units on the practice fields. Devaney dispatched assistant coach Mike Corgan to a local sporting goods store to find some “contrast jerseys,” a sleeveless pullover that went on top of the players’ practice jerseys. While the top offensive unit practiced in red jerseys and the second-string offense worked in green pullovers, the first string defense wore black pullovers and the second string wore the contrasting gold jerseys. The term quickly caught on, and gained momentum during Monte Kiffin’s tenure as defensive coordinator in the mid-1970s, before the Blackshirts earned national acclaim under Charlie McBride, who served as the Huskers’ defensive coordinator from 1982 to 1999. Blackshirt Tradition • Nebraska has ranked in the top 10 nationally in total defense 21 times since 1964. • Nebraska has ranked among the nation’s top 10 in all four major defensive categories (rush defense, pass defense, total defense and scoring defense) on four occasions, including helping the Huskers to national titles in 1994, 1995 and 1997. Grant Wistrom, Mike Rucker, Ndamukong Suh, Barrett Ruud and Larry Asante. 2003 BLACKSHIRTS The Blackshirt defense led by then-defensive coordinator Bo Pelini in 2003 forced a school-record 47 turnovers, including a Big 12-record 32 interceptions.

LSU FOOTBALL TRIBUTES Marquise Hill 1982-2007 LSU Football suffered a tragic loss on Memorial Day weekend when former Tiger defensive end Marquise Hill died in a watercraft accident on Lake Ponchartrain in New Orleans. Hill, a member of the NFL’s New England Patriots for the past three seasons, was a three- year (2001-03) letterman at LSU, and he was instrumental in the Tigers’ rise to prominence that culminated with the BCS national championship in 2003. An explosive player with a tremendous wingspan, Hill had five sacks in the final seven games of the ’03 season, including one in the national championship game victory over Oklahoma. Hill was the Patriots’ second-round draft choice in 2004, and he had developed into one of the most promising players in the organization. During the off-seasons, Hill came back to his hometown of New Orleans, where he helped his family members rebuild their homes after the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. He also worked out frequently at LSU’s football complex, where he was greatly respected and admired by the current Tiger players. Marquise Hill was 24 years old.
