29 AUGUSTANA FACILITIES

The most dynamic expansion of athletic facilities in the history of Augustana reflects the College’s commitment to NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. In 2005, Augustana’s Board of Trustees approved a Strategic Plan for Athletics. One of the strategic plan’s primary goals was “strengthening the Augustana athletic program to compete at the highest levels in NCAA Division II.” “We intend to pursue national championships in every sport we compete in,” President Rob Oliver said in November, 2006, announcing the College’s decision to remain in Division II. To do so, Augustana would have to upgrade its athletic facilities in order to recruit top student-athletes. Since January, 2007, the College has committed more than $16 million to building new or improving existing athletic facilities. Augustana alumni, friends, and the Sioux Falls business community have enthusiastically embraced the college’s vision for new and improved athletic facilities on campus. Since approval of the strategic plan in 2005, more than $12 million has been raised from more than 200 donors in support of these projects. Elmen Center / Hall Forum The Elmen Center houses the recreation, athletic, and physical education departments. Since opening in February 1989, Augustana students, staff, and faculty, as well as the Sioux Falls community and region, have enjoyed attending a wide variety of events in the Elmen Center. Each year the Elmen Center is host to over 100 events consisting of athletic events, music events, youth rallies, lectures, swim meets, youth camps, clinics, and tournaments. The Elmen Center also serves as the core facility for the campus recreational sports and fitness activities. The 81,000-square-foot- facility is available over 110 hours each week for a variety of recreational activities. Augustana students, staff, and faculty may take advantage of a 25-yard swimming pool, two racquetball courts, the Hall Sports Forum, six locker rooms, two dry saunas, classrooms, a state-of-the-art training facility, and a multi-purpose/wrestling room that can be used for aerobic dance, martial arts, and wrestling. The Hall Forum is the home for Vikings men's and women's basketball teams as well as the Viking wrestling and volleyball teams. The 27,000 square foot performance area has a state-of-the art 176- yard running track, long jump pit, batting cage, and four multi-use courts. In 2007, a new center-hung scoreboard was installed in addition to permanent, back-lit signage and stats boards. During the Summer of 2008, the Hall Forum will underwent $50,000 in improvements. The basketball/volleyball playing court was repainted with the new Viking and NSIC logos included. Courtside chairs were also refurbished to include the new Viking logo. Plans for future renovation of the forum are also being reviewed. All work is designed to enhance the home court environment and fan experience. Bill Hall Indoor Baseball/Softball Complex The Bill Hall Football Complex at 37th Street and Lake Avenue underwent extensive renovation in 2007 and is now the Bill Hall Baseball & Softball Complex. The $40,000 project included gutting the interior and installing the Jerstad/Kessinger Batting Cages, areas for pitching and fielding, and a clubhouse for players. The facility was dedicated April 5, 2008 with special tributes to Ken Kessinger, head baseball coach for 20 years, and Sandy Jerstad, who won over 1,000 games as the head softball coach. She also led the Vikings to the 1991 national title and a runner-up finish in 1993. Larson Track & Field Complex / Soccer Complex $2 million has been designated for the construction of a new soccer field and track complex on the east side of Grange Avenue across from the Elmen Center. Trees lining the east side of Grange Avenue were removed and the existing hill reduced. The soccer field will be located along the southern border of the property north of 37th Street. The goal is to have the soccer field ready when the Vikings report for fall practice. Regular season games will be played at the new site beginning in September, 2009. The new on-campus track, named the Larson Track and Field Complex, will be laid out directly north of the soccer field.
