THE BOWL ‘CHARITY’ SERIES The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) plays a major role in the world of college athletics. Every year, the BCS decides the NCAA Division I football National Champion. The BCS is comprised of four “Bowl Organizations” that each enjoy 501(c)(3) tax exempt status as charitable public benefit organizations, and each has done so since World War II. These Bowl Organizations are the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, the Orange Bowl, and the Fiesta Bowl. The IRS, in their Letters of Recognition of 501(c)(3) status to each Bowl Organization, states that the public benefit these organizations offer is “educational.” Despite being considered “charitable” organizations for tax purposes, the BCS Bowl Organizations are currently under attack for instead serving private interests. Although the actual percentage of revenues a “charitable” organization donates to charitable causes is not a true indicia of being considered a “charitable organization” for 501(c)(3) status, it is a good measurement to compare with an organization’s other expenditures. In 2011, the BCS held 23 bowl games that produced $186.3 million. The total charitable contribution for the BCS was $3.2 million, or a mere 1.7% of revenue. When considering whether a Bowl Organization fails the private inurement requirement of the operational test for 501(c)(3) status, it will not “look good” if the organization paid its Executive Officers more in salary and benefits than money they donated to charitable causes.1 The most criticized Bowl Organization of the four is surely the Fiesta Bowl. In the last Fiesta Bowl on January 2013, the Oregon Ducks defeated the Kansas State Wildcats in Glendale, AZ.

Some 40 bowl games were played in 2015 in addition to the College Football Playoff National Championship.1 This report uses both primary and secondary data collected from the 2014 and 2015 bowl game seasons. For the purposes of this report, total EI is defined as the expenditure of money from sources outside the bowl game area that resulted from hosting the events. Both direct EI from non-local attendees, such as spending on lodging, shopping and entertainment, and food and beverage is used to determine the total economic impact, as well as indirect impact which includes additional spending generated in the local area resulting from the bowl games. CAPITAL ONE ORANGE BOWL JANUARY 2, 2021 | HARD ROCK STADIUM One of the New Year?s Six college bowl games, the Capital One Orange Bowl traditionally features the ACC Champion or highest ranked non-playoff team from the ACC against the highest ranked available non-champion from among the Big Ten, SEC or Notre Dame in years when it doesn?t host a semifinal. The Capital One Orange Bowl will host a College Football Playoff Semifinal following the 2021 and 2024 regular seasons. This year, with Notre Dame playing as a member of the ACC, the opponent for the ACC in the Capital One Orange Bowl will be from the Big Ten or SEC. The Orange Bowl has been the ?Home of the ACC Champion? since 2006. As part of the College Football Playoff system, the Orange Bowl and the ACC extended their relationship with a 12-year agreement that began in 2014 and concludes after the 2025 season, ensuring that the Capital One Orange Bowl continues to serve as the premier bowl game for ACC teams. Current ACC schools have made a total of 46 appearances in the Orange Bowl. CFP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP JANUARY 11, 2021 | HARD ROCK STADIUM This year, the College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship Game will be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The Orange Bowl Committee, which has hosted 20 college football national championships in its 87 year history, led a collaborative effort of the entire community, South Florida municipalities, visitors bureaus, the Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium to bring the game to the region and function as a local Host Committee in support of the College Football Playoff.
