    Gone Fishing Overuse injuries in fly fishing By Tamara Mitchell Fly fishing can be a leisure activity associated with a peaceful connection with nature. It might be unbelievable that such a relaxing activity can be associated with pain in the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. In fact, fly fishing is a sport and is quite capable of producing overuse injuries. In this article, we will review research and cover how to prevent overuse injuries while fishing. If you are looking for excellent books on fly fishing and injury prevention, we suggest some in the Resources Section at the end of the article. There is also a Video Section at the end of the article with links and information on each of the videos referenced in the article. Traumatic Injuries As with all sports, there is a potential for injuries that occur suddenly and that can have devastating results. A fish hook in the eye, finger, or lip, fish bites, infections from any of these, and slipping on rocks are all ways that traumatic injuries can happen during fly fishing.1, 2 Nature presents lots of variables, you are flinging around a barbed hook, and you make fish pretty angry when you hook them, so there are many opportunities for mishaps. Although we certainly want you to be aware of these problems and to take proper care to prevent and treat this type of injury, but this article is devoted to the discussion of long-term injuries caused by repetitive strain. Kelleher, MD, and Misako Ishimura. Misako is a fly fishing friend and sent a copy of the book for me to review for our club. Misa, a FFF, CCI, has an extended list of accomplishments in the fly fishing world ranging from teaching fly casting in Japan with Joan Wulff and the late Mel Kreiger, to her work with Casting for Recovery ®, Project Healing Waters™, and Trout Unlimited, Inc.™, to studying fly tying with Mary Dette and Poul Jorgensen. Misa has been the Director of the Theodore Gordon Fly Fishers, and a Director of the International Women Fly Fishers (IWFF). She was president and founded World Fly Fishing Of Japan, where, she formed Fly Fishing Team Japan. As captain and member of Fly Fishing Team Japan for FIPS-Mouche World Fly Fishing Championship, she has fished in England, France, Spain, Slovakia, Sweden, Portugal, Finland, New Zealand, Scotland and Poland. Misa was honored as the First Woman An- gler during the World Fly Fishing Championship at Slovakia in 2004. Misako is dedicated to the conservation of the waters we fish, the sport of fly fishing, and her flies and artwork have been in many fly fishing publications. I was hooked. I soon realized that flies to be tied came in all sizes, shapes, colors and names. Well I thought, maybe I would start collecting fly tying patterns (recipes) and put them in a data base in my computer. At first, I thought it would be easy. Then I found The Fisherman’s Handbook of Trout Flies by Donald DuBois. This was published in 1960, and it included a comprehensive identification list of 5,939 trout fly patterns. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time, I could not even guess how many new trout fly patterns (recipes) were added. Collecting fly tying patterns (recipes) was not the way to go. I watched fly tying DVD’s and thought that this was a great way to have the pattern (recipes) and also learn how to tie the fly pattern. Then one of the MTFA members suggested that I search for the fly tying patterns (recipes) on the Internet, especially YouTube. Have you ever searched YouTube for a fly tying video or the Internet for a fly tying recipe? If the answer is yes, then you know that both have more fly tying instructions on just about every pattern you have heard of.
