In 2005, we put out traps to capture and count them and found over 20 species of snakes, turtles, frogs, toads and salamanders.” One of the unique reptiles is Blanding’s tur- tle, a mostly nondescript green turtle with a yellow chin. It’s an endangered species in In- diana, Michigan and many other Great Lakes states and Canada.

It eats both vegetation and small animals like fi sh, frogs and crustaceans. Its timid nature makes it one of the more diffi cult species for humans to fi nd. “If it’s able to survive here, that means it’s a good habitat for amphibians and reptiles,” said Quinlan. Among the plants unique to Ambler Flatwoods is club moss, May apple and service berry. Shirley Heinze Land Trust began steps to acquire Ambler Flatwoods in 1999 after the area was identi- fi ed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resourc- es as “a valuable natural resource.” The fi rst acquisition was 148 acres. By 2004, an additional 51 acres were purchased, and by 2009, two separate donations of 23 acres had been accept- ed.
