A little piece of a Te Awamutu backyard has been judged as one of the top three vegetable gardens in New Zealand by Yates. Carol Jane Oates confesses she is passionate about gardening and she has entered the Yates Vegie Growing Challenge all three times it has been run. The event runs twice per year, once for a Spring garden and once for an Autumn garden. Ms Oates has previously won a encouragement prize, but in the 2011 Spring Challenge she was one of the three major prizewinners. She received her $1000 Prezzy Card last week and says she may just use it to treat herself to something special. She is also in no doubt that some of the winnings will find its way back into her vegie garden. To be eligible for the competi- tion, members of the Yates Garden Club must enter and then post a blog at least once per fortnight on the progress of their garden. Yates recommend a selection of varieties to choose from and they must all be grown from seed. Ms Oates says she usually just plants everything on the list and relishes the challenge of growing new varieties. She subscribes to the full Yates system for best results. Another key is getting outside every day and doing a little bit to keep everything going. Ms Oates grows much more than she needs, even on her small property, and enjoys sharing with friends and family. She encourages everyone to give it a go and says the results are TC170112DT01 worthwhile.
