PNC TOWER | NATURAL VENTILATION

Completed in October 2015, The Tower at PNC Plaza marks a new step in PNC’s efforts to revive © https://www.gensler.com/projects/the-tower-at-pnc-plaza downtown . In designing this new 32-story corporate headquarters, Gensler and its partners set a new standard for sustainable skyscrapers, devising an innovative, low-energy strategy to heat and cool the building. From its one-of-a-kind, breathable double skin to its innovative workplace strategy, the LEED® Platinum-certified tower drives building performance to new levels. Through an integrated approach, the iconic tower advances the science of high-rise office buildings, introduces new benefits to the workplace and supports the community at large. The building’s interior was designed as a vertical campus to promote connectivity and collaboration. Proprietary research and company-specific observations informed the workplace design, with distinct zones for distinct work modes. Paired office floors are connected with two- story neighborhoods. These light-filled areas connect employees and provide alternate work spaces. Each neighborhood has subtle variations in program and furnishings, encouraging people to move between floors.

Production capacity continues to grow at the Tesla Gigafactory-1 manufacturing facility located in Sparks, Nevada. Mass production of lithium-ion batteries in sufficient quantities needed to “electrify” transportation is commanding an ever-expanding manufacturing footprint. In support of this growth, Ruskin was chosen as the supplier of airflow control dampers used to optimize the performance of the facilities’ pollution control systems.

Ruskin “Bubble Tight” isolation damper models BTR82 and BTO82, constructed of grades 304 or 316L stainless steel material, were installed at the Inlets and Outlets of the plant’s Regenerative Catalytic Oxidizers (RCO) to isolate and control the VOC laden process exhaust gases passing through the system. These dampers were supplied with factory-mounted pneumatic, spring-return actuators with switches, filters, and controls for effective and precise operation.

In addition to contributing to the destruction efficiency of the RCO, the Ruskin bubble tight dampers were also incorporated to isolate the thermal wheel of the system’s heat recovery operation.
