Life in the Saddle Pays Off for Rodeo Champ By Audra Clemons Photos by Sandra Pearce here is a little-known fact that Okeechobee has a few rodeo champions nestled within its barb-wired county lines. Being that the T town is one of Florida’s premier agricultur- al communities, this little-known fact makes pret- ty good sense. Recently, I had the good fortune of sitting down with one of Okeechobee’s world champions, Rabe Rabon, to discuss what it took to “It was my dream to be be the crème de la crème of the rodeo world. a world champion.” Rabon remembers as a small child watching his fa- ther rope calves and ride bronc horses on the rodeo circuit. He vividly describes the events as shaping his life, and he also credits them for influencing his direction as a professional rodeo competitor. As Ra- bon recollects his memories, I trace back to where the passion first began, and through childlike eyes, he describes his first love of rodeo. “I loved watching my dad rodeo, and I loved ev- erything about the cowboy way of life. When I was old enough to know about the National Finals Rodeo, it was my dream to be a world champion,” Rabon fondly recalled. In the footsteps of his father, Rabon saddled up his horse and began practicing. • SETTING RECORDS, CROWNING CHAMPS Kansas Bareback Rider Repeats Title; World Champion Barrel Racer Sets Arena Record
For more information: Ruth Nicolaus (319) 321-2152 For Kansas’ Biggest Rodeo SETTING RECORDS, CROWNING CHAMPS Kansas bareback rider repeats title; world champion barrel racer sets arena record Phillipsburg, Kans. (August 7, 2021) – In the bareback riding, Kansas cowboy Jesse Pope won the Phillipsburg title for the second consecutive year. The 22-year-old cowboy rode Beutler and Son Rodeo’s Nutrena’s Election Day for 87.5 points and $2980. It was a full eight seconds, Pope said. “It felt like we were doing a lot of things. She’s a pretty small horse and really electric and she bucked hard. I had to sit on the gas pedal the whole time and wait for the buzzer.” A recent graduate of Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo., Pope is ranked seventh in the world standings after an outstanding summer. He sat out of rodeo for two months with a fractured L5 vertebrae that pinched a disk, but over the week preceding and following July 4, Cowboy Christmas, won $21,000, and in the month of July, won $50,000. Pope made a big impression at his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last year, finishing as the average champion and third place in the world. Last year’s National Finals was a jumping off point for this year. “A lot of people didn’t know me, going into the Finals last year. I was feeling really going into it, and won the average. I’ve been building off of that. I took it, built a fire with it, and I’ve been putting gas on the fire every time I get on.” He loves coming to Kansas Biggest Rodeo.

  • Iowa Man Wins Bareback Riding at Elk City Rodeo for a Third Time; Several Contestants Pad Their World Standings Leads
For more information: Ruth Nicolaus (319) 321-2152 For the Elk City Rodeo of Champions RODEO THREE-PEAT Iowa man wins bareback riding at Elk City rodeo for a third time; several contestants pad their world standings leads ELK CITY, OKLA. – (September 6, 2020) – The third time’s just as charming as the first time for a world champion. For the third time in four years, Tim O’Connell won the bareback riding at the Elk City (Okla.) Rodeo of Champions, sponsored by Lucky Star Casino. The three-time PRCA world champion bareback rider scored 87 points on the Beutler and Son Rodeo horse Anything Goes for the win. It was a ride the perfectionist found reasons to critique. “It wasn’t the ride I wanted to put on,” O’Connell said. “I felt like I was in a dog fight tonight. I felt like he knocked me forward, out of position. It wasn’t the controlled, snappy, sharp ride I wanted. But it was a really good ride. I’m just super-critical of myself.” O’Connell stands on the top of the PRCA world standings, heading into the last few weeks of the PRCA season, which ends Sept. 30. He is about $26,000 ahead of the number two bareback rider, Kaycee Feild, but that doesn’t matter to O’Connell. “There’s no such thing as a safe lead. I’ve had that number one spot pretty much the whole year, and I don’t plan on giving it up.” O’Connell won the Elk City Rodeo last year (88.5 points) and in 2017 (85 points).

  • National Western Rodeo Underway
Reigning World Champ Takes Lead at National Western By Susan Kanode For the National Western Stock Show DENVER, Colo. --- A near capacity crowd at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo got to see rodeo history on Monday afternoon. Trevor Brazile, from Decatur, Texas, made history in 2009 when he won his seventh world championship in the all-around category in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Brazile is tied with Ty Murray for the most all-around titles in the association and surpassed Larry Mahan and Tom Ferguson with last year’s win. He is now working towards a record eighth championship and will stand alone as king of the cowboys when that happens, and if his performance here is any indication it could very well be in 2010. Brazile, who is also the reigning tie-down roping champion, took the lead in the first round of that event with a blazing 7.4-second run. Riding his great buckskin horse, Jaguar, he made a near perfect run that is the fastest seen in the Denver Coliseum in the past two years. Doug Pharr, from Victoria, Texas, also stopped the clock in 7.4 seconds in 2008. This was Brazile’s first of two appearances in tie-down roping. His second will be at the Tuesday matinee, beginning at 2 p.m. He competed in team roping on Sunday where he and Patrick Smith had a time of 5.3 seconds in the first round. That is currently in third place in the round. They failed to connect in the second round, so will be waiting to see if they remain among the top eight in the first round to get a share of the prize money.
