    For Immediate release Contact: Susan Kanode (817) 307-6336 Cooper takes tie-down loping lead By Susan Kanode For the National Western Stock Show DENVER, Colo. (Jan. 22, 2014) --- It’s been ten years since Clint Cooper won the tie-down roping title at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo. The Decatur, Texas, resident put himself in position to be back here again on Sunday for the U.S. Bank Pro Rodeo Finals with an 8.0-second run here on Wednesday. This put Cooper in the lead in the first round of competition. He was riding Sweetness, three time AQHA tie-down roping horse of the year. It’s been two years since he has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Sitting 34th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, Cooper could add to his earnings and make a significant move with a win here in Denver. He will rope again here at the Thursday morning performance and only needs an 8.7-second run to take the lead in the overall standings. On paper this looks good and realistically it can happen. However, there are many factors in tie-down roping. Cooper has a very dependable and consistent horse that does 80% of his job with no one on his back. Tomorrow, he will ride Sweetness into the roping box, turn him around and back him in the corner. When horse and calf are in position he will nod his head for the calf to be released. He has to give the calf a head start or will receive a 10-second penalty, virtually taking him out of any opportunity for a final round qualification.

Being that the T town is one of Florida’s premier agricultur- al communities, this little-known fact makes pret- ty good sense. Recently, I had the good fortune of sitting down with one of Okeechobee’s world champions, Rabe Rabon, to discuss what it took to “It was my dream to be be the crème de la crème of the rodeo world. a world champion.” Rabon remembers as a small child watching his fa- ther rope calves and ride bronc horses on the rodeo circuit. He vividly describes the events as shaping his life, and he also credits them for influencing his direction as a professional rodeo competitor. As Ra- bon recollects his memories, I trace back to where the passion first began, and through childlike eyes, he describes his first love of rodeo. “I loved watching my dad rodeo, and I loved ev- erything about the cowboy way of life. When I was old enough to know about the National Finals Rodeo, it was my dream to be a world champion,” Rabon fondly recalled. (August 7, 2021) – In the bareback riding, Kansas cowboy Jesse Pope won the Phillipsburg title for the second consecutive year. The 22-year-old cowboy rode Beutler and Son Rodeo’s Nutrena’s Election Day for 87.5 points and $2980. It was a full eight seconds, Pope said. “It felt like we were doing a lot of things. She’s a pretty small horse and really electric and she bucked hard. I had to sit on the gas pedal the whole time and wait for the buzzer.” A recent graduate of Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo., Pope is ranked seventh in the world standings after an outstanding summer. He sat out of rodeo for two months with a fractured L5 vertebrae that pinched a disk, but over the week preceding and following July 4, Cowboy Christmas, won $21,000, and in the month of July, won $50,000. Pope made a big impression at his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last year, finishing as the average champion and third place in the world. Last year’s National Finals was a jumping off point for this year. “A lot of people didn’t know me, going into the Finals last year. I was feeling really going into it, and won the average. I’ve been building off of that. I took it, built a fire with it, and I’ve been putting gas on the fire every time I get on.” He loves coming to Kansas Biggest Rodeo.
