Educarem Booklet A warm welcome to Supporting Catholic education and leadership Introduction Patrick Morrissey Chair Welcome to EducareM! We are a registered charity established in 1997 for the purpose of promoting, supporting and developing the mission of the Church in education. Our principal purpose is to be a resource for those of you who have responsibility for the leadership of Catholic schools in the 21st century. We strive to support you as you develop your school into a transformational centre for learning As a registered charity we work to support you in your mission to provide Catholic education across many levels within the school. Our trustees and consultants are all educationalists who are passionate about Catholic education for today and in the future. 1 Contents ■ Vision and Values ................................. Page 17 Vision and Values The vision that inspires EducareM is based on Mark 16.v15 “Go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good News to all creation.” and John 10.v10 “I have come that they may have life, life in all its fullness.” EducareM seeks to enable school leaders, teachers and pupils to understand their place in the mission of the Church – the transformation of the person for the transformation of society. Central mission of the Church “The mission of the Church is to evangelise, for the interior transformation and the renewal of humanity.” (The Religious Dimension of Education in a Catholic School, 1988) 2 Essential for the transformation of civilisation “The absence of the Catholic school would be a great loss for civilisation and for the natural and supernatural destiny of man.” (The Catholic Schools, 1977) Formation of the heart “.... Catholic educators need a “formation of the heart”: they need to be led to that encounter with God in Christ which awakens their love and opens their spirits “… (Educating together in Catholic schools. A shared vision between consecrated persons and the lay faithful. 2007) The School as ‘the most important institution’ for society “The function exercised by the school in society has no substitute; it is the most important institution that society has so far developed to respond to the right of each individual to an education and, therefore, to full personal development; it is one of the decisive elements in the structuring and the life of society itself.” (Declaration on Christian Education 1965) EducareM - Supporting Catholic education and leadership 3 Our History EducareM grew out of the need to articulate a clear definition of the 1988 Education Reform Act’s requirement that every young person of school age follow a curriculum which - “(2) (a) promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society; and (b) prepares such pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.” This became known as the SMSC requirement for the nation’s pupils, regardless of whether they had any faith background or not. EducareM was preceded by a Charity known as the Hertfordshire Religious Education Development Trust, which pioneered ways in which the National Curriculum and Religious Education could be contextualised within the SMSC statutory requirement. As the work of the HREDT developed, the trustees and their director were invited to speak to members of the House of Lords to explain how this section of the Education Reform Act could be delivered. As a result of these frequent and very fruitful discussions it became clear that HREDT was too local and needed to become a National Charity. Members of the House of Lords gave it their full support and were instrumental in its establishment. Funding was secured and EducareM was established in 1997. By offering Ofsted, the government of the time and head teachers a clear definition of what SMSC looked like and how it might be delivered across all Key Stages, EducareM pioneered a holistic training programme nationally. 4 Provision for Catholic Leaders 1. Developing a radical 21st century curriculum in a Catholic School. Contextualising the National Curriculum within the beliefs and values of the Catholic tradition. Through the National School of Formation a dynamic and challenging approach to teaching and learning in a Catholic School is being developed. • David Oakley Is New Bishop of Northampton
David Oakley is new Bishop of Northampton Canon Dr David Oakley delivers the keynote address at Adoremus 2018 Photo: YouTube screenshot Pope Francis has named Canon David Oakley, the leader of England and Wales’ largest seminary, as the new Bishop of Northampton. He succeeds Bishop Peter Doyle, who has reached the retirement age of 75, and will take over the governance of a diocese made up of almost 70 parishes spanning Bedford, Buckingham, Northampton and parts of Berkshire. Fr Oakley has for the last seven years served as Rector of St Mary’s College, Oscott, in the Archdiocese of Birmingham, which forms the highest number of men for the priesthood in England and Wales. In 2018 this number was 60. Described by those who know him as “pastoral, discerning and faithful” and as having a ministry in the mould of Pope Francis, the 64-year-old Bishop-elect was born in Stourbridge, in the West Midlands, and ordained a priest for Birmingham Archdiocese in 1980. The majority of his priestly ministry has been spent working in parishes, although he has completed a PhD in Pastoral Theology and studied catechesis at the Maryvale Institute. His other positions have included Pastoral Director and Procurator of Oscott and Director of the Archdiocese of Birmingham’s Parish and Family Catechesis department. The Diocese of Northampton said today: “Bishop Peter Doyle rejoices in this good news. The Bishop has worked closely with Bishop-elect David during his seven years as rector of the seminary at Oscott, and knows him to be a man of faith and prayer, and a pastoral priest and wise teacher.” Fr David is popular in the Church and beyond it, known for his gentleness and fidelity to the teachings of the Church.

  • 1 Briefing Paper on Catholic Bishops' Support for Compulsory Relationships Education and Relationships and Sex Education in En
Briefing paper on Catholic bishops’ support for compulsory Relationships Education and Relationships and Sex Education in England June 2020 The government legislation – the Children and Social Work Act (2017) – has made Relationships Education compulsory in primary schools in England and Relationships and Sex Education compulsory in secondary schools in England, including compulsory LGBT Relationships at secondary level. Schools are being encouraged to introduce these subjects in September 2020. However, due to the extensive disruption caused by COVID-19, schools have permission to delay its full implementation until the summer term 2021. This temporary reprieve could be used by Catholic bishops of England and Wales to revoke their current support for this legislation and to redirect the public debate on this matter by leading the faithful in resistance to the harmful government legislation designed to corrupt our children and to undermine the rights of parents as primary educators. The Bishops of England and Wales, through its Catholic Education Service (CES), have, tragically, advanced the government’s comprehensive Relationships and Sex Education agenda for some time. During the chairmanship of Archbishop Nichols (1999-2008), the CES: • developed a policy of partnership with a state-run confidential advice agency, called “Connexions”, allowing them to provide children in Catholic schools, including adolescents under the legal age of consent, access to abortion and contraception services without parental knowledge or consent. • became a member of the Sex Education Forum, which promotes positions contrary to the Catholic faith, particularly with regard to the LGBT issues, contraception and abortion. Children and Social Work Act (2017) In March 2017, the UK Parliament passed the Government’s Children and Social Work Act (2017), which made the new subjects of Relationships Education compulsory in all primary schools in England, and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) compulsory in all secondary schools in England, including faith and independent schools.

I mean, of course, St. Bernadette. It is 175 years since her birth (on 7th January 1844) and 140 years since her death (on 16th April 1879), which reminds us of the fact that she died at the age of just 35, to our minds shockingly young, but we know she had already achieved so much in ways that this world would never understand. We know that we would not be travelling to Lourdes had it not been for the tenacity and courage of this young street urchin, the poorest of the poor, who challenged the Church of her age to look with new eyes and a new heart at the truths of the Gospel that had been overlaid by the slow accretion of human pomposity and pride. Poor though she was, Bernadette had the eyes and the heart to see the Immaculate Virgin Mary and to be open to the riches she shared with her; so let us ask her during our pilgrimage this week to help us see what she saw and respond as generously as she did, and allow Our Blessed Mother to reshape and invigorate our lives.
