Vision and Values The vision that inspires EducareM is based on Mark 16.v15 “Go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good News to all creation.”

and John 10.v10 “I have come that they may have life, life in all its fullness.” EducareM seeks to enable school leaders, teachers and pupils to understand their place in the mission of the Church – the transformation of the person for the transformation of society. Central mission of the Church “The mission of the Church is to evangelise, for the interior transformation and the renewal of humanity.”

(The Religious Dimension of Education in a Catholic School, 1988) 2 Essential for the transformation of civilisation “The absence of the Catholic school would be a great loss for civilisation and for the natural and supernatural destiny of man.”

(The Catholic Schools, 1977) Formation of the heart “.... Catholic educators need a “formation of the heart”: they need to be led to that encounter with God in Christ which awakens their love and opens their spirits “…

(Educating together in Catholic schools. A shared vision between consecrated persons and the lay faithful. 2007) The School as ‘the most important institution’ for society “The function exercised by the school in society has no substitute; it is the most important institution that society has so far developed to respond to the right of each individual to an education and, therefore, to full personal development; it is one of the decisive elements in the structuring and the life of society itself.”

(Declaration on Christian Education 1965)

EducareM - Supporting Catholic education and leadership

3 Our History

EducareM grew out of the need to articulate a clear definition of the 1988 Education Reform Act’s requirement that every young person of school age follow a curriculum which - “(2) (a) promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society; and (b) prepares such pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.” This became known as the SMSC requirement for the nation’s pupils, regardless of whether they had any faith background or not. EducareM was preceded by a Charity known as the Hertfordshire Religious Education Development Trust, which pioneered ways in which the National Curriculum and Religious Education could be contextualised within the SMSC statutory requirement. As the work of the HREDT developed, the trustees and their director were invited to speak to members of the House of Lords to explain how this section of the Education Reform Act could be delivered. As a result of these frequent and very fruitful discussions it became clear that HREDT was too local and needed to become a National Charity. Members of the House of Lords gave it their full support and were instrumental in its establishment. Funding was secured and EducareM was established in 1997. By offering Ofsted, the government of the time and head teachers a clear definition of what SMSC looked like and how it might be delivered across all Key Stages, EducareM pioneered a holistic training programme nationally. 4 Provision for Catholic Leaders

7 The National Retreat

Catholic Head Teachers’ and Governors’ National Retreats The creation of the Catholic Head Teachers’ National Retreat came about as a result of a national consultation across all sectors of the educating community as how best to support head teachers in these challenging times. The need to nourish, strengthen and support the spiritual wellbeing of head teachers was identified as a key priority. To date the retreats have proved to be very successful and at the request of the participants have been further developed to include governors. Flowing from each retreat experience there is the possibility of appointing a personal spiritual guide to accompany Head Teachers.

14 The NSF National Network

Graduates of the NSF programme in co-operation with EducareM have formed the NSF National Network to ensure that Catholic leaders receive the continued support and inspiration that they deserve. The network involves colleagues taking roles as writers, advocates of formators – making a difference in the promotion of Catholic education. In essence, we provide INSET days for leaders with informed and stimulating speakers, working groups that develop specific curriculum for Catholic schools and a team who can provide tailored school based in-service. Some colleagues write articles for prominent publications, support their diocese and local school groups and have a positive presence on social media. This new NSF National Network is open to all leaders in Catholic education, it exists to provide those transformational experiences, so richly coveted by all its members and offer ongoing formational support with a spirit of generosity. The formation of our school leaders is critical to the mission of Catholic education and the transformation of our society. We have to restate the prophetic purpose of education in our schools, which is broader and deeper than the prevalent short term thinking and economic narrative that dominates the landscape. Our schools require a visionary and dynamic leadership model with a coherent rationale focused on the transformation of the human person and the transformation of society. It is incumbent us in the National School of Formation, as it is on all Catholics educators to recognise that they are part of this endeavour and to work tirelessly to support each other.

15 Living together for the Common Good “....It can, moreover, become a means through which it is possible to discern, in the light of the Gospel, what is positive in the world, what needs to be transformed and what injustices must be overcome.”

(Educating together in Catholic schools. A shared vision between consecrated persons and the lay faithful. 2007) For the formation of all “.....to form men and women who will be ready to take their place in society, preparing them for the social commitment to work for the improvement of social structures, bringing them more into conformity with the Gospel”

(Lay Catholics in Schools: Witnesses to Faith, 1982) Pastors ‘spare no sacrifice’ in helping Catholic schools “This Sacred Council of the Church earnestly entreats pastors and all the faithful to spare no sacrifice in helping Catholic schools fulfil their function in a continually more perfect way, and especially in caring for the needs of those who are poor in the goods of this world or who are deprived of the assistance and affection of a family or who are strangers to the gift of Faith.”

(Declaration on Christian Education, 1965) Find new ways

“Schools are a precious means for making a contribution to the progress of the Church and of society as a whole. Moreover, the educational field is not limited to the conventional school. Encourage each other to seek new forms of non-conventional education in accordance with “the needs of the times and of people.”

(Pope Francis speaking to the students of the Jesuit schools of Italy and Albania 7 June 2013)
