Affinities. Acacia alcockii is placed in sectlonPhyllodineae DC. on account of its globular flower-headsand 1-nervedphyllodes. Taxonomically the new speciesis placedbetween.'4' ancepslXJ. andA. leiophyilaBenth. from whtch it can be distinguishedby a combination of its racemoseinflorescinces and transverse seeds (see key under,4.cnceps). All threespecies occurwithin the . From dataderived from comparativemorphology it is possiblethal A. alcockiiis of hybrid origin. However,it seemsthat the northernand southernpopulations of the speciesmay have had different origins

Thesetwo setsof populationscan generallybe recognizedby the following characten'

Northernpopulations: phyttodes 8'11(14) mm wide,l:w : 6-10,usually shallowly recurued (sometimesstraight); Iegumes to 7-9cm long,8-12mm wide, thinly to moderatelycoriaceous, itraighfedgedoi slightlyto moderatelyconstricted between the seedsalthough random deep constdctionsdo occur.

Southernpopulatio ns phyllodest 2-21(30)mm wide,l:w : (2)3-7,usually straight (rarely shallowlyreiurved); legumes to 3.5-5cm long, 12-17mm wide, moderatelycoriaceous to slightlyirustaceous, oclasionally more or lesssub'woody, straight edged (occasionally few or many deepconstrictions on somelegumes).

Detailedfield studiesof threeof the northernpopulations were recently conducted by J' Briggsand F. Vickery. Thesepopulations are locatedat , StamfordHill (which coi-prisesseveral hundred plants) and Cape DonningtonPeninsula. Briggs (pers. comm ) ."ported thut plants from thesepopulations, do not show the rangeof morphological_variatio,n that one would expectfrom hybrid swarms.Furthermore, n eitherA. ancepsnor A leiophylk occurwithin seveialkilometres (? at least15 km) of thesepopulations. Nine seedlingsraised by Briggsfrom seedcollected from thesepopulations showed no apparentmorphological ,"gr.gitlon. Seedlingsof l. ancepsand A. leiophyllgwere not examined.Pollen from the (Stamford foitoriing 15 specimenswas examlned, Alcock 1256(Pillie Lake), Bnggs 121 1 Eill), Vickery\.n. i,cNg :,lg:ol to 349318(Cape Donnington Peninsula) and Svmon 6693 (Billv Light Foint). The only abnormalitieswere seen in the polyadsof Symon6693 where most weleeither asymmetric in shapeor possessedgrains with irregular, vestigial or no cytoplasm.

Comparablefield studieshave not beenconducted on the southempopulations. However, Briggsfias visited Memory Covewhere he observedA. ancepsand A leiophyllabt not A' alciikii. V ickery, who knowsthe southernLincoln National Parkwell, reported(via Briggs) that he has neverseen anything resemblingA. alcockii in the alea. Theseobsewations suggest that the plantswhich arehere attributed to A. alcockiilrom Memory Coveand WestPoint arenot c,ommonand may indeedsimply be spontaneous hybrids (probably between A' anceps andA. teiophylk). The pollenof ca[n ing 5390and Corbeft.howev€r. showed no iregulalities. The other-specimensfrom thesesouthern areas were either in fruit or very young bud' r

This variant has beencollected mainly from the vicinity of Port Lincoln (southernEyre Peninsula,).In many parts of the southernEyre and Yorke peninsulasplants have been collected which are morphologically intermediatebetween these two extremesand in somecases both phyllodetypes are ptesent on the samespecimen. The type of l. muelleriappea$ Io representthis intermediateform. Acacia pterigoidea and A. glaucescensare also probably referable to this form.

Hybridity. Jndgtngprincipallyfrom morphologicalevidence derived from herbariumspecimens it appearsas thoughA. ancepshybridizes with a numberof relatedtaxa. Only rarelywere we ableto examinethese taxa in the field. Our purposehere is to draw attentionto these putative hybridsand thus lay a foundationfor future studies.

L A. ancepsx nematophylla.See A. nematophyl/abelow. 2. ? A. ancepsx leiophylla.See A. alcockii above. 3. ? A. ancepsx notabilis.

Somespecimens from StreakyBay and FowlersBay (northernEyre Peninsula)possess charactemwhich suggest they are somewhat intermediate between A. ancepsand A. notabilis. Many of thesespecimens have previously been determined as l. notabilisat herb.AD and mappedas such by Whibley(1980: 122). Their coarselyangular branchlets, thickly coriaceous phyllodes, golden fimbriolate bracteole laminae and calyx lobesand more or lesswoody legumes clearlyrelate them Io A. anceps. However, a few characterssuggest intergradation with -4. notabilis, viz. inflorcscencesa mixture of axillary pedunclesand racemes, phyllodes occasionally with 2 glandsand./or sub-attenuate. Although l. ancepsocciJrs in the samegeneral area as theseputative hybrids, current collections show A. notabilisto be distributedconsiderably fudher east.Specimens referable to this possible80i72 hybrid are C.R. Alcock 3395 (AD), N. Hall 80i72 (MEL, PERTH), A.E. Orchard3142, (AD), Veitchs.n. (AD 96716196)- all StreakyBay area,A.E.Orchard 3144 (AD) - FowlersBay. Specimens with oblanc€olate, obtusephyllodes superficially resemble ,4. alcockii lsoulhernEyre Peninsula- seeabove) but are distinguishedby their largerflower-heads (50-60'flowered), golden fimbriolate bracteoles and more or lesswoody legumes. "Boston-point, Typespecimens. The holotypeof,4. nematophyllaat herb.Kew is annotated Dr. F. Mueller". The specimenoriginated from the SonderHerbarium and the sheetis stamped HerbariumBenthamianum 1854. An isotypeof thistaxon, also at herb.K (duplicatesat MEL), showsthat the plantwas in fact collectedby C. Wilhelmi, not F. Mueller. This Kew isotype "Boston sheetis stampedHerbarium Hookerianum 1867 and is annotated(in Mueller'shand) Point, Port Lincoln. Legit. Carl Wilhelmii exam. Dr. ferd. Mueller". Although Bentham determinedthis specimenas A. nematophyllahe seeminglydid not do so prior to the publicationof the protologueotherwise C. Wilhelmi would presumablyhave been given as ",4. the collector.Above Bentham's annotation someone has written calamifoliaSweelvar." and underlinedthe speciesname in red. This underliningindicates that the specimenwas examinedby Benthamprior to the publicationof Acacia in Fl. Austral. vol. 2 (seefootnote on p. 8 of Fl. Austral.vol. 1, 1863).In Fl. Austral.vol. 2 (1864)Bentham included the name A. nematophyllaunder A. calamifolra, presumably following Mueller (1863:l2).
