Reading Group: The Rainbow opening chapter Tuesday 15th September The Rainbow chronicles the lives of three generations of the Brangwen family over a period of more than 60 years, setting them against the emergence of modern England. Dr Sean Matthews and Dr John Worthen (author of D. H. Lawrence: The Life of An Outsider) will lead this reading group to explore the opening chapter of D.H. Lawrence’s novel, which was banned by the authorities in 1915. Time: 6.30pm until 7.30pm Venue: The Rocking Horse Bistro, Durban House Heritage Centre, Eastwood Admission: £2.50 with complimentary glass of wine, tea/coffee or orange juice. Lawrence and his first girlfriend Jessie Chambers. The Library Acoustic Lounge Bar will be hosting a special open mic night to showcase new writing and acoustic music. So be brave and come along to perform for a great night out! Talk: The Rainbow Thursday 17th September The Rainbow was first published in September 1915 but soon fell foul of The Obscene Publications Act of 1857. All unsold copies were ordered to be destroyed. An ‘expurgated’ version first published in the U.S.A. and copied on this side of The Atlantic was the only version available until the first Penguin Edition of 1949. Ron Faulks, of the D.H. Lawrence Society, will deliver a talk exploring this novel, which many scholars regard as Lawrence’s finest. Not only does it deal with three generations of the Brangwen family during the nineteenth century living in Cossall, thinly disguised as Cossethay, but is also a working out of his own religious thoughts and feelings. Time: 7pm until 8pm Venue: Durban House Heritage Centre, Eastwood Admission: FREE Tickets: Contact the D. H. Lawrence Festival Box Office on (01773) 717 353
