mM4m ANNUAL mmtm Carl-Gustaf Rossby: His Times, 11 16 JANUARY 1998 Personality, and Actions Norman A. Phillips Merrimack, New Hampshire Editor's note: This is the first of a series of papers about Carl-Gustaf Rossby that will be published in the Bulletin. All papers were presented at the 1998 Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Society as part of the Special Session Honoring the Centennial of the Birth of Carl-Gustaf A. Rossby. Other papers in the series will appear in upcoming issues of the Bulletin. ABSTRACT The many activities of Carl-Gustaf Rossby are described, beginning with his early adventures at sea, and presented in the context of the meteorological world of his time. His scientific ideas and papers are not discussed except for an important aspect of his typical approach to analysis of atmospheric and oceanic motion. His success in fostering interac- tion between different people and institutions is emphasized. 1 • Early sea voyages Persson. First, in his biography of Tor Bergeron, G. H. Liljequist (1980) records that in the summer of Carl-Gustaf Rossby! It is an honor to speak about 1919 Rossby suggested that it would be better to use this great meteorologist and human being. You are all our present practice of red for a warm front and blue aware of his theoretical contributions to our science. for a cold front instead of the reverse convention then But there was much more to Rossby than his theoreti- in use. Also V. Bjerknes (1943) credits Rossby with cal creativity, and it is this that I will address: he was leading the other students in late summer of 1919 to not only a synoptic meteorologist, he was the domi- take turns with duties over the coming winter so the nant figure in modernizing American meteorological institute's forecasting could continue.
