  • Alberta Strengthens Economic and Cultural Ties in Asia Minister Evans to Further Korea and Japan Relations
November 1, 2010 Alberta strengthens economic and cultural ties in Asia Minister Evans to further Korea and Japan relations Edmonton... International and Intergovernmental Relations Minister Iris Evans will promote Alberta’s economic, intergovernmental and cultural relationships in key Asian markets November 4-15. “Korea and Japan are strong trading partners with Alberta, and Asian investment has helped drive Alberta’s oil sands development,” said Minister Evans. “This mission is an important opportunity to provide government and industry with an update on Alberta’s clean energy story.” While in Korea, Minister Evans will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, a move that will further encourage economic cooperation in the energy sector. Other highlights of the mission include meetings with top ranking government officials in both Korea and Japan’s foreign affairs and trade ministries. Minister Evans will also participate in the Hokkaido Regional Leaders Forum in Japan, and meet with the Canadian Ambassadors to both Korea and Japan. Speaking engagements include a guest lecture at Meiji University in Tokyo and a presentation to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Korea. This mission builds on the work of earlier New West Partnership (NWP) missions by Premier Ed Stelmach, as well as agriculture ministers, who promoted trade and commerce opportunities between Western Canada and Asia. Minister Evans will continue to emphasize the importance of the NWP and hold follow-up meetings with Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Minister Evans will also take part in two special anniversaries while in Japan.

  • PICTURES of the FLOATING WORLD an Exploration of the World of the Yoshiwara, 吉原
Cherry Blossom in the Yoshiwara by Yoshikazu PICTURES OF THE FLOATING WORLD An exploration of the world of the Yoshiwara, 吉原 PICTURES OF THE FLOATING WORLD In the nightless city Floating free from life’s cares Picture memories Haiku Keith Oram INTRODUCTION Japanese woodblock prints that recorded the Ukiyo, the ‘Floating World’ of the Yoshiwara of Edo city were so numerous that during the nineteenth century they were used to wrap ceramics exported to Europe. This practice provided some European artists with their first proper encounter with these beautifully created images. The impact on western art of their bold colours and sensuous line was quite significant influencing many artists of the avant gard. The story of those prints, however, began much earlier in the seventeenth century. First a little background history. The battle of Sekigahara in 1600 and the fall of Osaka in 1615 allowed Tokugawa Ieyasu to gain complete control of Japan. He had been made Shogun, supreme military leader, in 1603, but the fall of Osaka was the final action that gave him complete control. Almost his first act was to move the capital from Kyoto, the realm of the Emperor, to Edo, now Tokyo. This backwater town, now the new capital, grew very quickly into a large town. Tokugawa Iemitsu, Shogun 1623-51, required the daimyo of Japan, local rulers and warlords, to remain in Edo every other year, but when they returned to their fiefs he made them leave their families in the capital. This ‘hostage’ style management, sankin tokai, helped to maintain the peace. The other affect was that the daimyo needed to build large homes in Edo for their families.

It sets out the terms of comparison between the Blueshirts and Fascist organisations in Europe and Japan, indicating where there were similarities and differences of ideology and practice, as well as establishing links between them. It then analyses the reasons for the appeal of Fascist organisations and methods to Chiang Kaishek. Following an examination of global factors, the emergence of the Blueshirts from an internal point of view is considered. As well as assuming many of the characteristics of a Fascist organisation, especially according to the Japanese model and to some extent to the European model, the Blueshirts were in many ways typical of the power-cliques which were already an integral part of Chinese politics.
