Patna Printed by: Page 4 of 28 IGIMS DIRECTORY IGIMS AT GLANCE Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sheikhpura, Patna was established as an institute in the state of Bihar with a view to develop clinical services in super specialties of the highest standard, a system, a system of supportive supervision and continued education for the medical and health functionaries and to promote service, research and education in the field of community medicine and allied subjects. IGIMS was established on 19th November 1983, as an autonomous organization on the pattern of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. The objective was to provide super specialty medical facilities in Bihar. On 27thJanuary 1983 Cabinet approved the completion of this massive project in 4 phases within a span of six(6) years. According to the decision of State Government, 130.20 Acres of land was transferred to IGIMS. It was proposed that the hospital will be completed by 1990 with a capacity to house 1000 beds. The estimated cost was 110 crores rupees which was later revised to 133 crores. IGIMS Medical College was setup in 2011 to impart undergraduate teaching with 100 student’s admission in each batch. MISSION Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sheikhpura, Patna was setup with an objective to provide the best Medicare facilities to the peoples in and around Bihar. The Hospital aims to be the state of the art in this region. So, far, it has been successful in achieving part of its goal and IGIMS is acting hard to achieve its goals for broader interest of masses. Objectives To establish an apex centre for delivery of health and medical care of highest standard To train specialists of high order in different branches of medical services To improve the health services in the State through appropriate linkage and referral system with Medical Colleges and District and Sub divisional hospitals. To develop the continued education programme and award degree and certificates and Post Graduate degrees To develop clinical research centers for conducting investigation on the problems of human health and diseases peculiar to and prevent in this part of the country. To develop Community Health Research Centre to study and find out solutions to the problems of health of the community with particular emphasis on reproductive biology and population control. To develop research and training in basic sciences relevant to the problems andneeds of the Community. Statistics of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi and Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research(PGIMER), Chandigarh show large number of patients from Bihar, suffering from Heart Diseases, Neurology problems, Cancer, Renal Dialysis, Ophthalmic problems etc. who go to AIIMS/PGIMER. Getting treatment at AIIMS/ PGIMER puts heavy economical burden on them apart from the difficulty of travelling to a distant location and puts excessive loads on those institutions. Looking into the problem, State Government, in consultation with experts from various parts of country, decided to setup an institute of AIIMS standard so that the patients from Bihar, Sikkim, Nepal, and Bhutan etc may get best Medicare at the lowest possible expense. To achieve these objectives the institute was established and named after the Former Prime Minister of India, Smt. Indira Gandhi. Page 5 of 28 Academic and Research Activities:- A Medical College was established for MBBS Course in the year 2011 after permission of Medical Council of India and A Nursing College was also established in the year 2011 after the Nursing Council of India to impart teaching and training for degree and diploma courses in Nursing. At present 29 departments with more than 150 faculty are running in the institute which are actively involved in different teaching programs (DM/ M. Ch./MD/MS/MBBS) and Degree & Diploma in Pare Medical Courses. M.Ch. Urology was started from academic year 2009-10 after permission of MCI New Delhi. MCI New Delhi has also start D.M. (Gastroenterology) in the year 2011. M.D. /M.S courses are running in the department of Anesthesiology, Biochemistry and Microbiology since 2011. All these courses are permitted by MCI, New Delhi. MEDICAL Council of India has already conducted the assessment to start M.D. courses in Community Medicine, Pharmacology, FM&T, Physiology and General Medicine and M.S. courses in Anatomy and General surgery in 2015 report from MCI aviated to start these courses. MBBS Courses: Medical College was started in the year 2011, and each year 100 students are being admitted in this course. DNB Courses: DNB courses are running in the Department of Anesthesiology, Biochemistry, Gastroenterology, Ophthalmology and Radiotherapy. PARA Medical Courses: Three degree courses and Eleven Para Medical courses are running in the Institute. At present Degree courses are – B.Sc. Nursing, BMXRT (B.Sc. Medical X-ray Technology Radiography) and B.Sc. Ophthalmic Techniques. BMXRT course is being successfully conducted since 1998. Diploma course available at the Institute are:- General Nursing & Midwifery (GNM), Diploma in Medical laboratory Technology(DMLT), Diploma In Medical Record Technology (DMRT), Diploma in Urological Technology (DNT), Diploma in Neuro Technology (DNT), Diploma in O.T. Assistant Technology (DOT) , Diploma in Cardiac Technology (DCT), Diploma in Anesthesia Technology (DAT) Diploma in Endoscopy Technology (DET), Diploma in Medical Radiotherapy Technology (DMRT) Services rendered:- Following works has been added successfully in last six months in IGIMS: Establishment of EYE Bank, Establishment of Blood Bank, Establishment of O.T. of Obstetrics&Gynecology department, Expansion of Emergency& Establishment of Emergency OT, Establishment of 60 bedded General Surgery ward , Establishment of Neonatal ICU, Paid Evening Clinic, State of the art Cath Lab for Cardiac Patients, Establishment of State of the art 128 slices CT Scan Machine, Facility for ND Yag laser in RIO, Expansion of pathological test facilities 24 x 7, New building for Engineering cell, Different infrastructure enhancement and expansion in manpower for different department, Strengthened all wards with bed sheet, linen, nebulizer, oxygen cylinder, B.P. instrument, Establishment of electronic surveillance, Expansion of Pharmacology Lab, N K N Broad Band internet facility for all department, Strengthening of electric substation and installation of sound less generation, Starting of three new hostel, Renovation of Guest House.
