ABINGDON NATURALISTS’ SOCIETY GARDEN SURVEY REPORT for the PERIOD SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2011 Introduction The Abingdon Naturalists’ Society (ANS) aims to foster the study and appreciation of natural history among people living in Abingdon and district. With changes in climate and land development it is important that we understand the how these changes may influence our local flora and fauna. To this end ANS started a survey of the birds and other animals found in Abingdon and adjacent areas. Those interested in contributing to this important study were asked to complete a survey form to let us know. details of birds and other vertebrates plus some insects, seen in or near to their garden or place of residence . The BIRD survey aims to be more comprehensive than the RSPB survey and should give us details of the range of birds found in the area, as well as, an indication of their frequency of sighting. In keeping with BTO policy we did not ask for information on birds flying over head such as gulls or rooks. We did, however, ask for sightings of include Red kites, that circle and forage in gardens, as we are interested in the number n our area follow the reintroduction of this species. Information on Swift, Swallow and Martins foraging for insects over gardens is included . We asked participants who hear owls during the survey period to include this information in their returns. The ANIMAL survey is designed to give an idea of the main Vertebrate species in and around Abingdon including mammals, reptiles and amphibians. -

Compendium of World War Two Memories
World War Two memories Short accounts of the wartime experiences of individual Radley residents and memories of life on the home front in the village Compiled by Christine Wootton Published on the Club website in 2020 to mark the 75th Anniversary of the end of World War Two Party to celebrate VJ Day in August 1946 Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) was on 8 August 1945. It's likely the party shown in the photograph above was held in Lower Radley in a field next to the railway line opposite the old village hall. Club member Rita Ford remembers a party held there with the little ones in fancy dress, including Winston Churchill and wife, a soldier and a Spitfire. The photograph fits this description. It's possible the party was one of a series held after 1945 until well into the 1950s to celebrate VE Day and similar events, and so the date of 1946 handwritten on the photograph may indeed be correct. www.radleyhistoryclub.org.uk ABOUT THE PROJECT These accounts prepared by Club member and past chairman, Christine Wootton, have two main sources: • recordings from Radley History Club’s extensive oral history collection • material acquired by Christine during research on other topics. Below Christine explains how the project came about. Some years ago Radley resident, Bill Small, gave a talk at the Radley Retirement Group about his time as a prisoner of war. He was captured in May 1940 at Dunkirk and the 80th anniversary reminded me that I had a transcript of his talk. I felt that it would be good to share his experiences with the wider community and this set me off thinking that it would be useful to record, in an easily accessible form, the wartime experiences of more Radley people. -

We have two new teachers; Mrs Phipps and Mrs Kittle, as well as a new Ed Vaizey Matthew Barber Nick Boles Headteacher! The classroom In a packed Wantage Civic Hall on Sept 20th, Planning Minister, Nick Boles, names have changed too, and now along with local MP Ed Vaizey and Matthew Barber, leader of the Vale of each class is named after a tree. White Horse District Council, faced an audience from right across the Vale. We have Oak class (Reception), All were there to question why so much new development was destined for Elm class (Year 1), Horse their area. Chestnut class (Year 2), Walnut The usual reasons were wheeled out, lack of building by previous class (Years 3 and 4), Sycamore government, need for starter homes, a whole list of guidelines with class (Years 4 and 5) and Willow acronyms that hadn't been followed but little hope of any relief from the class (Year 6). The Vale of White Horse District Council have adopted their Local Plan Part 1 for the period up to 2031. Part 2 of the Plan has an enormous impact on our Parish with the Vale seeking to remove all of Shippon from the Green Belt and planning to develop Dalton Barracks and the airfield to accommodate up to 4,000+ new homes. Taking the lead from the very strong views expressed at a public consultation we held in April last year, we will be opposing Part 2 of the Plan when it is considered by the planning inspector later this year. -
