We look forward to welcoming you on one of our escorted holidays soon – whether it is a cultural tour with a focus on art, history, architecture or gardens, one of our holidays to a major music festival or opera house, or perhaps an exclusive Kirker Music Festival. The success of our holidays is based on meticulous research and carefully planned itineraries which often include visits to places that are not usually available to visitors. Many of our clients enjoy the social aspects and so we include a number of dinners at some of our favourite local restaurants, as well as free time for independent exploration. Many of the tours have become familiar favourites and so we shall be returning once again to St. Petersburg, the Côte d’Azur – for both its art and its gardens – Sicily and Rome. More recent, but increasingly popular, additions include parts of Europe not yet on the beaten path, such as Salamanca, Puglia and Albania. Each year we also include some new destinations, and for 2019 we are pleased to offer a tour of the dazzling gardens of Marrakech in the spring, and a new itinerary that combines Venice with visits to the Palladian villas and prosecco vineyards in the Veneto countryside. For those interested in military history, look out for tours to the battlefields of Monte Cassino, the Peninsular War and the Western Front. It is always interesting to see how some places reinvent themselves; two such examples in this brochure are Málaga which, as the birthplace of Picasso, was perhaps well placed to evolve into an art city of major importance, and Essen, in the previously industrial Ruhr Valley, which is now a region of parks and lakes, with a striking Alvar Aalto opera house. Our exclusive Kirker Music Festivals are enjoyed by those who relish spending a holiday in the company of acclaimed musicians – as well as hearing them perform. For the 14th successive year, Ischia in the Bay of Naples leads the way, whilst our new Italian festival with Melvyn Tan, at Villa Medici Giulini north of Milan, promises to be a great addition. On board Fred.Olsen’s Black Watch (with its intimate theatre ideal for chamber music concerts) we have two music cruises planned; to the Canary Islands & Madeira in February and the west coast of France in September. Kirker’s carefully-selected tour leaders play a crucial role in the success of our holidays and remain loyal and dedicated. They seamlessly bridge the gap between erudition and conviviality to ensure you can relax and enjoy your holiday in the company of like-minded travellers. Blandade insatser i tidig Verdi Giuseppe Verdi: I due Foscari Solister: Vladimir Stoyanov, Stefan Pop, Maria Katzarava, Giacomo Prestia, m.fl. Filharmonica Arturo Toscanini & Coro del Teatro Regio di Parma Dirigent: Paolo Arrivabeni Dynamic CDS7865 [2 CD] Giuseppe Verdi: Attila Solister: Ildebrando d’Arcangelo, Liudmyla Monastyrska, Stefano La Colla, George Petean, m.fl.

  • Profile of a Plant: the Olive in Early Medieval Italy, 400-900 CE By
Profile of a Plant: The Olive in Early Medieval Italy, 400-900 CE by Benjamin Jon Graham A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) in the University of Michigan 2014 Doctoral Committee: Professor Paolo Squatriti, Chair Associate Professor Diane Owen Hughes Professor Richard P. Tucker Professor Raymond H. Van Dam © Benjamin J. Graham, 2014 Acknowledgements Planting an olive tree is an act of faith. A cultivator must patiently protect, water, and till the soil around the plant for fifteen years before it begins to bear fruit. Though this dissertation is not nearly as useful or palatable as the olive’s pressed fruits, its slow growth to completion resembles the tree in as much as it was the patient and diligent kindness of my friends, mentors, and family that enabled me to finish the project. Mercifully it took fewer than fifteen years. My deepest thanks go to Paolo Squatriti, who provoked and inspired me to write an unconventional dissertation. I am unable to articulate the ways he has influenced my scholarship, teaching, and life. Ray Van Dam’s clarity of thought helped to shape and rein in my run-away ideas. Diane Hughes unfailingly saw the big picture—how the story of the olive connected to different strands of history. These three people in particular made graduate school a humane and deeply edifying experience. Joining them for the dissertation defense was Richard Tucker, whose capacious understanding of the history of the environment improved this work immensely. In addition to these, I would like to thank David Akin, Hussein Fancy, Tom Green, Alison Cornish, Kathleen King, Lorna Alstetter, Diana Denney, Terre Fisher, Liz Kamali, Jon Farr, Yanay Israeli, and Noah Blan, all at the University of Michigan, for their benevolence.

  • The Royal Opera Celebrates 25 Years of Richard Eyre's Iconic Production
02/10/2019 The Royal Opera celebrates 25 years of Richard Eyre’s iconic production of La traviata La traviata, Act I, The Royal Opera © 2019 ROH. Photographed by Tristram Kenton. Verdi’s eternally popular La traviata returns to the Royal Opera House in December 2019. This Season we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the premiere of Richard Eyre’s magnificent production, which perfectly encapsulates the colour, glamour and splendour of 19th-century Paris against which the heroine’s tragedy unfolds. For all Royal Opera House press releases visit www.roh.org.uk/for/press-and-media From lyrical arias to vibrant choruses, La traviata contains some of Verdi’s finest and best-known music. Based on Alexandre Dumas fils’s novel and play La Dame aux camélias, itself based on the life of Dumas’ own lover Marie Duplessis, La traviata tells the story of the courtesan Violetta and the passionate love she feels for Alfredo Germont – a love that leads her to make the ultimate sacrifice. Verdi’s most romantic opera has delighted audiences around the world for more than 150 years and Richard Eyre’s wonderful production has been a staple of The Royal Opera’s repertory since 1994. It is revived nearly every Season and is an unmissable experience for opera fans and newcomers alike. For this long-running revival, five internationally-acclaimed singers perform the role of Violetta: the Armenian soprano Hrachuhi Bassenz, the Azerbaijani soprano Dinara Alieva, the Russian sopranos Kristina Mkhitaryan and Vlada Borovko (the latter a former Royal Opera Jette Parker Young Artist) and the Polish soprano Aleksandra Kurzak.

Joyce Yang Piano Blessed with “poetic and sensitive pianism” (Washington Post) and a “wondrous sense of color” (San Francisco Classical Voice), pianist Joyce Yang captivates audiences with her virtuosity, lyricism, and interpretive sensitivity. As a Van Cliburn International Piano Competition silver medalist and Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, Yang showcases her colorful musical personality in solo recitals and collaborations with the world’s top orchestras and chamber musicians. Yang came to international attention in 2005 when she won the silver medal at the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The youngest contestant at 19 years old, she took home two additional awards: the Steven De Groote Memorial Award for Best Performance of Chamber Music (with the Takàcs Quartet) and the Beverley Taylor Smith Award for Best Performance of a New Work. Since her spectacular debut, she has blossomed into an “astonishing artist” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung). She has performed as soloist with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, the Baltimore, Detroit, Houston, Milwaukee, San Francisco, Sydney, and Toronto symphony orchestras, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, and the BBC Philharmonic (among many others), working with such distinguished conductors as Edo de Waart, Lorin Maazel, James Conlon, Leonard Slatkin, David Robertson, Bramwell Tovey, Peter Oundjian, and Jaap van Zweden. Annual Report 2018–19 3 Introduction 5 Metropolitan Opera Board of Directors 6 Season Repertory and Events 14 Artist Roster 16 The Financial Results 20 Our Patrons On the cover: Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes a bow after his first official performance as Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer Music Director PHOTO: JONATHAN TICHLER / MET OPERA 2 Introduction The 2018–19 season was a historic one for the Metropolitan Opera. Not only did the company present more than 200 exiting performances, but we also welcomed Yannick Nézet-Séguin as the Met’s new Jeanette Lerman- Neubauer Music Director. Maestro Nézet-Séguin is only the third conductor to hold the title of Music Director since the company’s founding in 1883. I am also happy to report that the 2018–19 season marked the fifth year running in which the company’s finances were balanced or very nearly so, as we recorded a very small deficit of less than 1% of expenses. The season opened with the premiere of a new staging of Saint-Saëns’s epic Samson et Dalila and also included three other new productions, as well as three exhilarating full cycles of Wagner’s Ring and a full slate of 18 revivals. The Live in HD series of cinema transmissions brought opera to audiences around the world for the 13th season, with ten broadcasts reaching more than two million people. Combined earned revenue for the Met (box office, media, and presentations) totaled $121 million. As in past seasons, total paid attendance for the season in the opera house was 75%. The new productions in the 2018–19 season were the work of three distinguished directors, two having had previous successes at the Met and one making his company debut.
